Re: Torquay match thread
Well done indeed..and correct me if I'm wrong, but excluding the 1-0 win away at Wycombe in the opening match of the 2007/08(?) season, this will be the first time we've been in credit in the goals for /against department..
Good stuff STANLEY |
Re: Torquay match thread
Good result today, another 3 points in the bag. Well done lads. 12th spot now.

Re: Torquay match thread
A good win, but our defence struggled in the last ten minutes. I hope Grants injury is not serious,he was man of the match
|
Re: Torquay match thread
The word I got about that was that he was stamped on by the guy who scored Torquay's 2nd goal. The ref gave nothing.

Good performance and a win despite best efforts to throw it away at the end - why no Kempson and Lees ? Feel with them on the pitch it would have been 4-0. Also their number 33 was a cracking player his run for their second was like a hot knife through butter. |
Re: Torquay match thread
Cheers for that SPARKIE..I'll leave the stats to the statitions...

Re: Torquay match thread
Thought it was a good display all round, Flynn on his debut, Winnard, Ryan,Grant, any of those would have done me fer man of match, closely followed by others, was nice to meet Clayton Red at half time, only disapointment fer me was the gate.
|
Re: Torquay match thread
Well just got back.
Very entertaining game. But my god we dont make it easy for ourselves, it could have been 4-4 by the end. Grant/ Symes/ Kee just ran riot in the 2nd half. Think Grant just looked knackered to be honest by the end, so probably good news that he got subbed. Tom Leeds was injured, he wasnt even on the bench. As for Kempson he was on the bench for some bizarre reason, ????? Oh well roll on Barnet on Tuesday :) |
Re: Torquay match thread
Is'nt Kemp on 4 yellows and if he had played and got booked he would have mist tuesdays FA cup replay at barnet:) played safe as flynn is cup tied having played for chester in the cup.
|
Re: Torquay match thread
ahhh well pointed out mab.
Hopefully he will be back in against Barnet |
Re: Torquay match thread
For the second time in a row can someone enlighten me re. Torquay's penalty, as I couldn't see any infringement from the Clayton End?
At times our passing and movement was brilliant, and on the whole the defence was great. However, I agree that Torquay could have scored 2 or 3 when they had a go in the last quarter and the ref. definitely missed a good shout for a handball penalty to them. Having said that, we always looked like we could go down the other end and wrap it up if need be. I thought Bobby Grant had his best game for us when playing out wide, but the whole team were on top of their game today and it was thrilling to watch them go all-out on attack for the whole game. God, what more do they have to do to bring the crowds rolling back? |
Re: Torquay match thread
I agree Redraine, some of our attacking football in the 2nd half was brilliant to watch.
As for their penalty, it was another VERY soft 1 :(, oh well i couldent care we won :) |
Re: Torquay match thread
none of us could see what the Torquay penalty was for? be interesting to see the highlights, defo looked a soft un, but it evened out fer me, thought the handball near the end was one.:)

Both pens were soft, but at least this time it did not cost us, still thinking about Proccys header, why not hit it??? Still great to see it trickle over the line... :) :) :) |
Re: Torquay match thread
Also thought our new keeper, "Boozer" :D had a good game. Much more calm and composed than Dunbavin. Hope we can keep him til the end of the season.

Re: Torquay match thread
A very entertaining game, but how we missed Kempson & Lees today..the defence looked stretched at times. Murphy doesn't look up to the challenge at the moment and, with 60 % (o.k. 3 out of the 5 !!) of the back line changed today I suppose we were always going to be a bit suspect at the back...that said...
We looked very good going forward and I'll keep on banging the same drum.....when we play the ball on the deck we play some damn good football that has and will take sides apart...All in all a very good 3 points and win the game in hand and we're looking at catching sides in the play offs !!!:D The gates continue to be a problem...Somehow the powers that be will have to come up with some sort of offer that'll get folk coming back, that said I wonder just how many of the larger gates during the Conference winning season were visiting Rovers or Claret fans ??? Tuesday is a massive game...the money involved for winning could just be the difference between lifting the other embargo & potentially strengthening or having to sell Bobby or Symes. If we can keep this side together & strengthen, we could look to try & get to the play offs.:o If we have to sell, I only hope we can get the right price, with plenty of clauses pitched in and Coley gets some money to try and replace them more than adequately. I'd hate to see the promise shown in recent weeks and months fade away (ala first season after selling Roberts & Craney) That would only serve to exasperate the attendance problem.:( Admittedly, we're always going to have to sell eventually, when we unearth such gems, but it's what we do with the money (if and when it comes) and how we replace such players that will be the acid test so to speak...Hopefully with Illyas' financial acumen & Coley's nouse we can continue the ten year trend.... ONWARDS & UPWARDS !!!! |
Re: Torquay match thread
if they can keep the players this season allied wi consistency, i was only saying this aft, the play-offs are attainable fer this squad.;)
|
Re: Torquay match thread
Just seen the goals on sky sports news; bloody well done red men.
Made up for Luke Joyce getting his first goal. Hope Bobby's not out for too long. |
Re: Torquay match thread
Just a level(drunken) head on things... I'm laughing at how we are talking about play offs its bloody brilliant we were favourites to go down at the start of the season. Best team in red I've seen and would be ecstactic if we finish in the top half this season. Everyone who turned up to the Bradford game deserves it.

Re: Torquay match thread
As many have already said within this thread the football when we play it on the deck is the best we have played since our return to the League, the only time we come unstuck is against physical sides Bournemouth & Dagenham which spring to mind recently where we end up back to route one.
The cup runs are great and are a great revenue stream for the Club as money is straight in either via the turnstile or money for progressing and are more likely particulary the more high profile to either attract larger away following or encourage the neutrals on. The flip side could be focus could drift away from the league particulary if the Arch becomes more visible and the more games with the smaller squad could lead to more injuries suspensions etc. I think in an adverse way having the embargo may just have helped with having a smaller squad there is less inclination to chop & change things and leads to a squad that knows it strong points and also it's weaker points and probably leads to a more focussed squad. As for attracting crowds back to the Crown well things like specific groups being targetted, schools could be more focused on with giving away a selection of free tickets to kids so long as they are accompanied by a paying Adult (I know that already exsists with the ASFC Redz scheme) but maybe a focus on each individual school in the borough? An odd match could be offered up as reduced admission to Season Ticket holders from other Clubs to encourage more walk on's? More use of the media maybe we burnt our chips there with the SOS Scheme but having seen Rovers "Taking back Ewood" and Burnley's "Dare to Dream" used over the past twelve months and what it has achieved for both Clubs maybe a full on clever marketing campaign could work or just stick with the steady progress that is already being made by the Club?:) One thing for sure is how nice is it to look at the League Table on the run up to the New Year thinking we still have a Club and in more way's than one things are definately on the up:) |

Re: Torquay match thread
Just another match report from a newspaper in the Torquay area.
But the bit I like is where they call us "play-off chasing Stanley". I know it's early days yet, but isn't it nice to have our name prefixed with that particular adjective, instead of "struggling..."? :) Gulls' rally comes too |

Re: Torquay match thread
i like the honesty displayed by their manager, who is one of the few to actually give us much credit.
I always try to read the other forums after Stanley games and you would not believe how many times opposition fans state that they weren't beaten by a better team. We aren't a 'fashionable' side so, just like when we won the conference, we'll struggle to get any credit and will just be referred to as a dirty clogging side. |
