Moments of the Decade
As it says on the tin. Nicked from another forum, but I think our fans have more to shout about from this decade than most! The inclusions of the promotions, the cups and the appearance of Ilyas & Peter in that court room are pretty much taken as given. :D
What were your top five moments of the decade as a Stanley fan? :) |
Re: Moments of the Decade
the main one fer me was stanley returning to the league, which fer me as a founder member is where they belong, after 62 never thought i would live to see the day, the others are more recent "Ilyas n Peter", the way the players responded through the darkest days, the incredible job coley n jimmy performed to get those players/ performances.:)

Re: Moments of the Decade
1. Letting the Gouck out on TV
2. Aldershot when we won 4-1 on a Tuesday, a legendary night including gate crashing the players lounge & being turned down for more lager at ASda!!! 3. Live on Sky at Grays, fantastic day with all the world watching, flags, streamers, whistles... tremendous stuff 4. QPR this year, anyone who went will know why. Home fans never give the away team a round of applause afterwards 5. Aldershot first game in Conf, huge ground, huge anticipation then bang, Proccy! Legendary, ace following, ace noise, again Shots fans moved round to thank us for the effort from the terrace.. I could go on on on on on & probs more missed in a happy haze of drunkenness..... Canvey & Forest Green away, Halifax streamers first time, Morecambe on Sky with 3000 on the gate, Witton Albion away the best ever 0-0 draw, Radcliffe Borough with 3 pitch invasions, Bournemouth with 700 away & fans flying to the game!, open top bus tour round Accy, etc etc I have seen MOST games home & away for the last 10 years & I reckon not many fans will have had a better 10 years... Long may it continue |
Re: Moments of the Decade
A few things stand out in my mind from games in the last 10 years:
Firstly, Rory Prendergasts little piroette (sp) during his penalty run up against Bournemouth in the FA Cup replay, made me even more nervous than I thought I already was!!! I still can't help thinging what a tool he'd have looked if he'd have missed!!!! Secondly, hearing the roar go up when Andy Gouck scored THAT goal against Huddersfield and wondering to myself why on earth I was playing footy on the old Accs pitches next door instead of being at the game!!! Thirdly, Steve Jagielka's screaming volley against Halifax at the Shay, in the live sky game. I was stewarding in front of the Halifax fans when that happened and I had to hide every bit of emotion for fear of getting decked!!! Fourth would be stood on the Crown pitch when the Conference trophy was presented and getting photos of some rather elated if rather tipsy players!!! Fifth, the fancy dress outing to Christie Park, laughing at certain players on both teams doing a double take at being photographed by a bright green leprechaun!!!!! And the constant noise we made that night and not just from the ultras :o) |
Re: Moments of the Decade
Slightly off the beaten track and I almost, in a moment that was pure football, included Kenny Arthur against Wycombe in his first match for us but, in no particular order.
1) When big frank implored the crowd to give it up for the 'little maestro' Mike Marsh – the culmination of one beautiful season that let us know how good we should be. 2) Jonny Smith running around with concussion at hyde utd, not for the amusement (of which, lets be honest, there was some with his bambi esque legs flapping around as he galloped hither and thither) but much more for the commitment and heart the lad showed to this team of ours. 3) The whole team wearing Anthony Cavanagh t-shirts as they were given the conference trophy. It was a poignant moment that showed how tight the band of brothers were and that from such personal tragedy triumph could emerge for our then club captain. That such a thing is overlooked for the sake of a misplaced fiver does no justice to Peter. 4)Rommy Boco scores in the league, our first in 44 years. 5)Sitting on a boat in Lake Windermere, why? Just found out by text that our winding up had been postponed. The RAF flew overhead about 30 minutes later and I like to think it was a celebratory fly past… |

Re: Moments of the Decade
Good thread this... I have one that means little to you people, but so much too me,and that is about 5 years ago when I discovered the clubs' demise I'ld read about as a kid in a magazine (Football Monthly),back in the 60s, was still in existence-and going quite well thank-you. That was magic. A boys dream had come true. I was just so annoyed I hadn't known earlier.
On the field side of things, when we beat Torquay 1-0 which secured our spot for another season, and what those two magnificent men , messers Khan and Marsden did for ASFC and its family. Very special. |

1. The whole of the conference winning season.
2. Welch's goal away at Stockport County. Probably the best goal ive ever seen Live. 3. The whole performance against Cheltenham at home this season. Simply a joy to watch. 4. Goucks winner v Huddersfield in FA CUP. 5. My 1st ever away game, Colwyn Bay August 96. After then i knew i was hooked on the stanley :) |
Re: Moments of the Decade
1) York away 2005/06. We'd been beaten a few days before by Southport and some were saying that the wheel was coming off our promotion bandwagon. 2-1 down at HT and the dream seemed to be fading. Then we turned it round for a glorious 4-2 victory, while news was coming through of a Hereford defeat. I remember walking out of the ground, down past York Minster, just knowing in my heart that we were on our way back to the football league.
2) Watching a Bournemouth penalty taker arc the ball high into the air and into the long grass at the back of the Clayton End car park. Cue - mass rejoicing, as we were through to the next round of the FA Cup. 3) Sitting at my desk on a dark afternoon, worrying about what was going on at a certain bankruptcy court on London. Then seeing Ilyas's message on here, looking forward to the following Saturday's FA cup match. Saved! 4) Bury away in the first season back - at least 800 Stanley fans there in the pubs, round the ground, everywhere. It really did feel like we'd taken over. 5) Going for pre-match drinks at Notts Co and discovering that "Hooters" had nothing to do with owls. ;) |
Re: Moments of the Decade
1. Bournemouth away, first real away let away with no parents just a bunch of mates traveling the country to watch stanley :)
2. Woking.....nothing needs to be said 3. Torquay weekend, seeing the english riveria invaded by the good folk of accrington...tarquin and tina turner in a awful irish bar!!! 4. Aldershot away, tuesday night win, wallys bar, players bar, players whip round for our ale, players buying everyone beer in asda.... 5. Chester away our first game back, the hairs on the back of my neck stood on end to the constant "stanley are Back! Stanley are back! hello! hello!" So many other cracking days/nights/weeks so i shall go on 6. QPR, walking down loftus road at about 7:50 just after kick off and only being able to hear stanleys dale cavasse 7. Bury away 900 traveled and i thought i had walked in the wrong end 8. Morecambe away last year, and taking over the back room in the york :D 9. Halifax away, streamers and that picture with everyone with a little bit of joy in their face at chucking a till roll.... 10. Bradford - thumping them and listening to their fans counting down to pretend they had scored 11. Exeter away - We won it on sky, we won it on Skyyyyyyy, 12. SOS campaign this year - seeing the true nature of football fans, Forever a little bit of accy will be BURY FC Still so many more to mention... but this is one hell of a ride :D |

Sharing many of the memories mentioned above, here's my five (by no means in order of importance): 1) Andy Procter goal away at Aldershot - first game in Conference (first time the players had names on the backs of their shirts). 2) Peter Swailes Shield victory away at Burton Albion - Coley sticks 'On Stanley On' flag in middle of Burton's pitch. 3) Away at Whitby - second game in two days; won 3-0. 4) Simon Carden hat trick vs Burscough 5) Away at Macclesfield 2009 Could also include the two legged cup final against BPA, seeing Mark Sertori hanging out of Jamie Speare's sunroof racing down Queen's Road West, the bus/train/taxi/bus ride to Hyde, Forest Green away 2006, Mike Marsh's perfect assist for a Lutel James goal vs Blyth, Jimmy Bell headlock on a Barrow player, Jimmy Bell battering a Bamber Bridge player, Paul Howarth's goal vs Aldershot, Halifax streamers, every Christie Park trip... all unforgettable. Roll on the tens & teens! On Stanley On :) |
Re: Moments of the Decade
1. Promotion into the league
2. SOS 3. Andy Gouck scoring the winner against Huddersfield live on TV |
Re: Moments of the Decade
Many happy times watching stanley.... these are in no order
1. One of my first away games when we beat Leigh RMI 6-0 a few weeks after they had knocked us out of the FA cup 2. Away days out at Grays and Canvey Island in our promotion season 3. A number of people have mentioned that 90th minute winner against Torquay 4. Seeing so many people at Burnley for the SOS campaign 5. Promotion to the league and of course hearing Coley and MAB give their opinions to the match officials...:-) |
Re: Moments of the Decade
For me the decade hangs on the firsts of 2009:
First team to beat Barnet, Notts County et al at their own grounds. First time we have won at Rochdale and Bury's own grounds. First time I have felt that the future of Accrington Stanley is more secure, many thanks to IK and all others who helped SAVE OUR STANLEY. My only hope for the New Year is to get some decent referees at the Crown and to win promotion to League One (whether it is by the play-offs or by automatic promotion (actually beating Morecambe at Wembley, that would be ace).:tongueout |
Re: Moments of the Decade
1) gouck goal against Huddersfield - watching Stanley for the first time on tv having been told to by my parents (both big fans from the unibond days). It's fair to say I caught the bug that day.
2) Gary's equalizer at the Shay in the conference winning season. Just as he struck the ball I was stood next to me dad and he said "this'll tell us if were going up or not this season". I just said "it's in" and then the away end went mental. 3) same season the morecambe game live on sky. Me and the wife took over a pub in ennis, Ireland to watch the match. (the batman had to lie to one of the regs that the tv had broke to keep the game on tv.) The whole pub were Stanley fans by the end of the night and I left them my scarf 4) leaving Edgar street absolutely gutted with a 2-2 draw even though it virtually assured promotion. I'm not one for singing at games but did the full 90 that day. Even met a Hereford fan who wished us well! 5) a memorable day when Stanley came to the town hall in accy and drinking a bottle of bollanger whilst the town sang to craney et al! Many more super memories like Bradford away - Leam's game of keepy uppy and the shock of twenty quid entry. Hopefully many more to come from the best little team in the world |

Re: Moments of the Decade
Last game of the season at Exeter when we were in the Conference the 1st season and Exeter thought they had made the play offs at the end. Fireworks a stage everything only to find like we had been singing your staying down with the Stanley. Took them 20 minutes to realise they hadn't qualified it was the funniest thing laughing at all their players and supporters, priceless I'll never forget that day.
