Anyone know someone who attended the 1958 game
What a proud day for all of us. for everyone in the town, and everyone associated with the club.
I have so much to say, but will have to restrain myself otherwise i will end up babbling on forever. If anyone can let me know if they are aware of anyone who went to the 1958 4th round (i hope i am right, that is the last time we made this stage of the FA Cup) Congratulations to you all. I cant tell you how happy I am. See you on Saturday. Ilyas |
Re: Anyone know someone who attended the 1958 game
words cant say how good i feel right now

Re: Anyone know someone who attended the 1958 game
I was alive in '58, but a bit too young to attend that particular match.
|
Re: Anyone know someone who attended the 1958 game
rob you are not the only one. and for once, words dont matter. all true fans will appreciate exactly how you feel.
i just spoke to Proccy. I reminded him of the time when he first pulled on a stanley shirt - the season that I sponsored him as my player for the season, and how far we have come. He is a good lad, and along with coley and jimmy, epitomise all that is good with our club. he and the boys will give a fantastic account of themselves. |
Re: Anyone know someone who attended the 1958 game
My dad was there, and he still has the match programme. - v Portsmouth. He also went to Portsmouth's 5th Round match which saw them get beat by Burnley.

Re: Anyone know someone who attended the 1958 game
i am getting mixed replies here. i think it may have been the 58/59 season, but tecnically 1959. apparently in 1958 we lost in the third round. anyone who can clarify with a drink in the club lounge !

Re: Anyone know someone who attended the 1958 game
Its going to be amazing on saturday.I really think we have a fantastic chance of progressing, we have a cracking squad, brilliant manager, and like everyone knows anything is possible in the FA Cup, just think back to 1999 when chesterfield were so close to reaching the final, i cant wait.

Re: Anyone know someone who attended the 1958 game
According to 'Accrington Stanley - A Complete Record1894-1962) We drew with Portsmouth 0-0 at Peel Park on 24-01-1959 and were beaten at their place 4-1 on the 28-01-59

Re: Anyone know someone who attended the 1958 game
I was there in the 58-59 season against Portsmouth, fourth round 0-0 tie, also the 57-58 season against Bristol City when Stanley lost in a 3rd round replay, also the 59-60 against P.N.E. both games, again Stanley lost in the 3rd round replay. Some great days but today was just as great, just sorry I can,t be there against Fulham.

I was also at Anfield in the 55-56 for our 2-0 loss but we deserved a lot better. I have a funny story about that one but I,ll save it for later.

Re: Anyone know someone who attended the 1958 game
I was at the game against Portsmouth in 1959. The pitch was covered with snow and we played with an orange ball, 0-0 against a then First Division team. As far as I know Stanley have only reached the fourth round three times - in 1927 when they lost 7-2 away at Chelsea, in 1937 when they lost 2-0 away at Man City and in 1959 against Portsmouth. Stanley have never reached the fifth round.

Re: Anyone know someone who attended the 1958 game
records are here:
Football Club History Database - Accrington Football Club History Database - Accrington Stanley{1** Football Club History Database - Accrington Stanley game declared void against WBA and a replay ordered against Sunderland in the 1890s neutral ground second replay against Lancaster at Deepdale in the 1930s - anybody go to that? certainly been interesting following our club through the ages |
Re: Anyone know someone who attended the 1958 game
Jan '59 I'd just turned 15 and was living down south, having been exiled from my Accy birthplace after the 0 - 0 thriller against Southport at Peel Park in Dec '51. I re-call newspaper reports saying Portsmouth were lucky to escape a snowy Peel Park with a 0 - 0. Not having seen my beloved Stanley since '51, I confess that I was a bad lad that day and bunked off school at lunchtime for the train to Portsmouth for the afternoon replay. Train was delayed by signalling problems and it was 3.20ish when I got into the ground. Back then there was no such thing as subs and I found only 9 fit Stanleymen + goalkeeper (McInnes ?) hobbling badly on the right wing. Can't remember who had already been carried off but feel sure we were at least 3 if not 4 goals down. Nevertheless a gutsy display saw us stem the tide and even pull a goal back. Took my punishment for going awol with tremendous pride despite our cup exit.

Re: Anyone know someone who attended the 1958 game
Was it Aberdeen Stanley in those days with Galbraith as the Manager?
Not one of the AGS U-15s of '55 were asked to go for a trial, a few were asked to and played for other Lancashire Teams Colts sides, but none were good enough for Mr Galbraith, ifI remember correctly. |

Re: Anyone know someone who attended the 1958 game
What year was it when Stanley played PNE at Peel Park, think it might have been a reply, I know I was behind the goals at the school end, it was a terrible night it stair roded it down all night. I think PNE won 4-0 but not sure

Wish I could be at the Crown on Saturday, I'm sure the atmosphere will be fantastic .. for selfish reasons I wouldn't mind a draw and a replay I can get too, but I'll settle for a win and Arsenal away in round 5 :D |

Re: Anyone know someone who attended the 1958 game
:confused:I don't remember the Portsmouth match but I was on Peel Park when Stanley played replay against Preston N E on Monday night Jan 9th 1961.:)
I was nearly nine years old and I remember it was an absolutely foul night, raining and freezing cold. Stanley lost 4 - 0 in front of 14,500 fans after drawing at Preston in front of 25,000 Fans !!! :):) I think 14,500 was the highest ever official attendance at Peel Park. At that time I lived on the council estate at Within Grove, Huncoat where all the Scottish players were housed. I remember Stanley fielding an All Scottish team under Galbraith !! I went to school and knocked about with the children of the likes of Jimmy Harrower, Norrie McCreadie, Armour Ashe etc. It was a great era but sadly fell apart in '62.:mad::(:mad: I carried on watching them in front of very small crowds as an ameteur side in the Lancs Combination, sometimes only about 50 would turn up. Very sad to see the ground disintegrate when as a teenager I went to the Accy Jazz Club :theband: on Sturday nights to get drunk and try to find a lass! Played a few games for reserves at age 20 in 1972 after club returned from the ashes. Started watching Stanley again after going to Ewood Park in early nineties against Crewe Alex Over 10,000 on Ewood. Great day and a big boost to Stanley's glorious climb back to the Football League.:) Conference win was also magic, Woking was FAB and like everbody else I was on the pitch in ECSTACY. :thankya:Huddersfield and Bournemouth were great but tomorrow could be our greatest day ever!!! :):)Get on to the Crown and lets see the whole of Accrington join the ULTRAS and sing and shout and scream their support for the Boys in Red!!!!!!:thankya::thankya: |
