Help needed

I could do with a bit help compiling a cart load of information at the moment for a new project that I'm working on.

If anybody wants to spend a shed load of hours sat at their PC inputting some Stanley related data then I'd really appreciate it. I'm reckoning I need to put in about 500 hours so anything would really lighten the load .

Excel is required and a copy of Breedons Encyclopedia would be handy, although I could lend my spare copy if you are local.

Please send a PM if you are interested in being as bored to tears as I am!

(really selling it aren't I?)

my question would be why are you using excel? 500 hours worth of data input would tell me you really need a database and not a spreadsheet........

also surely there is a better way if you already have the data electronically to just transform it via a query or something.

errm, using what I have and what I know how to use!

also, the data I have is gathered from various places - none of it is already in a programme of some description that can then be converted.

i'd really recommend something else. plus you are aware that excel is limited to 65535 rows......

500 hours suggests more than that number of rows

On one sheet, but you can have many sheets in a workbook - like one for each season maybe. Without knowing what Macca's up to, "advice" is probably useless - but sticking with what you know (and have got on your PC) is a pretty sensible starting point imho.

surely the whole point of collating this data is so it can be analysed, queried, presented etc. whilst putting data across worksheets is one way of increasing the capacity its not the 'right' solution. i've been through this pain of inheriting a spreadsheet at work which was equally the wrong tool. i have migrated and built it into a database with web acccess, full reporting and analytical packs which now takes what was just a record system into being a very useful tool that is now being pushed across 6 other teams as an approved solution.

i am happy if macca wants to email me a copy of the spreadsheet to recommend better ways and maybe even help build the database for him.

Entwisi, will email you a basic of what I'm doing - if you can recommend a better (and equally free way) of doing it then I'm all ears. Thanks for your input.

Re: Help needed

If it's collating all Stanleys results then it can easily be done in a spreadsheet with multiple pages as it's already been done for all the games Rangers have played and I would guess that is far more than Stanley.

While a database program such as Access does have far better functionality it is likely that a lot less people have it and even fewer know how to work it so if it is aimed at people in general Excel would suffice.
