new keeper

todays Observer has Coley as saying that we have signed a goalkeeper from a Championship club and that he has some International experience. Not announcing who it is yet as the guy is on holiday so has yet to put pen to paper.

Any guesses who it is? I'm going for Alan Martin or Darren Randolph. Hoping for the 2nd one :D

Redraine 10-06-2010 17:53

Re: new keeper

I would prefer Martin, for what it's worth.:D

Re: new keeper

Maybe it's a season long loan ? There's an international keeper at one of your near neighbours who doesn't seem to be wanted by the manager ;)

Re: new keeper

If you were talking about DAVID Martin, then I would agree, RR. Personally I thought Alan Martin was no better than Bavs.

David Martin is due to join MK Dons after being released by Liverpool and I really don't think Alan Martin would return to the Crown Ground.

Re: new keeper

David Martin has been signed by MK Dons, correct.

Alan Martin wont come back, which doesnt bothar me, he was average at best.

Randolph and Elliott are both fighting for Charlton number 1 shirt so no chance there either.

Could be an interesting signing if it is Penny.

Season long loan could be exactly what he needs to get back into the swing of 1st team games having hardly played for the Clarets.

Rabbit out the hat anybody :)

Re: new keeper

Would be very shocked if it is Penny. Only seen him a few times for Burnley but has a lot of potential from what I've seen before. Hopefully he's learnt to speak English in the last couple of months!

He has one year left on his contract, no chance of a first team game. Would make sense to loan him out, though there would have to be a subsidy on wages. He's played more games at the Crown Ground than he has at the Turf :D

Beast may not have had a good season but I'm pretty sure he was one of the 3 busiest goalkeepers in the league, law of averages says cock ups will occur ;).

He has re-signed for 2 years and Laws has already made enquiries about bringing in another keeper to fight for the shirt.

It also seems Penny may not be allowed to go out on loan due to work permit conditions, so may have thrown a red herring in here :D

I didn't realise we had had 2 Martins. I mean I liked the red haired one, whichever he is. I can't remember another one!

Are you sure that's right, Dave? I would have thought there'd be no change in his employment situation, as he's still officially a Burnley FC employee, so he could play for us?

I agree, technically he will have the same employer, however his working conditions would change, he would get a game :)

All seems a bit confusing, but time will tell :D

Seems Martin from Leeds is the rumourists favourite anyway

...a pity. From what I've heard, he sounds like he would have been quite a useful acquisition for us.

Good call. It re-iterates the point I was maiking about Penny having no chance of a game. Weaver was given a 6 month contract to cover Jensen.

I suspect Weaver's wage demands might be a bit high

It can't be, he's six foot four. He wouldn't fit in Stanley's changing room.

He is being chased by Premier & Championship clubs and decided to turn them all down to join Stanley. It's June 11th today not April 1st :D

JEFF 11-06-2010 13:06

Re: new keeper

It's supposed to be a Championship team keeper. Lee Grant is a league one keeper. Aslo available are Jonathan Lund from Burnley and Rhys Wilson from Swansea.

smudgie 11-06-2010 15:54

Re: new keeper

Johnny Lund could be a nice signing aswell.

He has had decent reviews when he has played for Clarets reserves

Cannot see Alan Martin coming back to Stanley, we will just have to wait and see!!

Haggis316 11-06-2010 17:48

Re: new keeper

Lee Grant is still under contract at Sheffield Wednesday and has said he wants to stay even though he is now a League 1 goal keeper and not a Championship one.

His form in the last 2 seasons is such that he has been linked to a move to Premiership clubs and I think there would be an uproar if he left Sheffield Wednesday for less than a substantial 7 figure sum.

Haggis316 11-06-2010 17:53

Re: new keeper

In passing I gather that Rob Burch the rival keeper Lee Grant saw off when they were vying for the number one spot at Sheffield Wednesday has just got a move from Lincoln to Notts County.

Re: new keeper

Well the current options open to us from the championship on a free transfer are :

Ian Bennett aged 38 Sheffield United
Casper Ankergren aged 30 Leeds United
William Biggs aged 18 Doncaster Rovers
Adam Billard aged 18 Sheffield United
Alex Cisak aged 21 Leicester City
Samuel Cole aged 18 Peterborough United
Steve Collis aged 29 Bristol City
Daryl Flahaven aged 31 Crystal Palace
Ryan Jones aged 18 Leeds United
Carl Pentney aged 21 Leicester City
Tom Rusling aged 18 Barnsley
Ben Smith aged 23 Doncaster Rovers
Rhys Wilson aged 18 Swansea City

Some interesting and experienced names in there to be honest. Would like to see someone with a bit of league experience come in, the likes of Ankergren, Flahaven, Collis, Smith or Bennett would all be classed a major coup for us.

Re: new keeper

Heres a long shot , There was a keeper at blackburn ( same age as deano) called Zac jones, who many thought was destined for the highest level.
After playing for England at the age above his, he seemed to have drifted off the radar ( i think he played for burscough against Acci in pre season and was outstanding)
Cant believe that such a talent has not been snapped up and Coleman seems to have a knack of getting the best out of these type of players.
None of the younger keepers i have seen last season at various clubs were as good
He may only be a six footer but had a great kicking game and was a class shot stopper

football19 15-06-2010 18:41

Re: new keeper

frank fielding (rochdale last year) was understudy to zac jones despite being older at the academy.
Rumour had it that zacs dad fell out with bobby downes and zac was the loser in it all.
His older brother, luke jones was also released ( good centre back who captained the academy to win the prem)
I think he played for shrewsbury and is at kidderminster now, hes another local lad worth looking at

I'm sure that we signed him as emergency cover the year before last. Was on the bench for the last two or three games if I remember right

Yes, it was Burscough. The Chorley local newspaper says he's now with FC United. Rather off-topic really because it's obvious he's not the one that Coley has his eye on!

Zac signed for Chorley just as I left there, very good keeper but left there when Waywell was sacked at the end of the season. Interesting things going on there with Gary Flitcroft and Matt Jansen taking over.
