I think all cup matches should be settled on the day and played midweek.

the season is approximately 39 weeks long, the Premier league has only 38 matches, there is bags of room to give the top level a couple of extra weeks off. Of course, we have an extra 7 games - plus cup matches to squeeze into those 39 midweek slots. I really don't know how we'd manage!

The Prem also has to make provision for European Competitions and also the fact that there are 3 weekends which are lost to international weeks every season with a winter break of 2 weeks the season would be down to 34 weeks, I think last season Fulham played over 60 games in all competitions, any team reaching the final of the champions league play an extra 17 matches, then there are FA and League Cup commitments too. I can see your point Mac, slotting all the games in at any level will take some doing, especially with Fergie and Wenger aways moaning about fixture congestion;)

Of course, if the break was only for the Premiership, clubs like Stanley could benefit from fans of other clubs looking for their football 'fix'. Obviously, they'd have to come from the immediate West of us for a little while...
