To summarise:

Coley brought on Putterill for Barnett and Turner for Murphy.

Stanley attacked, McConville crossed and Gornell fired the ball in the net to reduce the deficit.

All this after Danny Whitaker added a fourth for the home team.

Make sense???

We switch off at the back and concede soft goals. I know we're still 4-2, and it makes for entertaining games, but it will cost us on occasions. If we can cut that out, we'd be laughing.

The BBC are in a complete mix-up with the substitutions!

57:14 Substitution Ray Putterill comes on in place of Charlie Barnett.
57:40 Substitution Chris Turner replaces Charlie Barnett.
57:40 Substitution Chris Turner comes on in place of Peter Murphy.
57:14 Substitution Ray Putterill replaces Andrew Procter.

They haven't even got Charlie Barnett on the team sheet; it's that Bennett chap again! But it seems Proccy's still on.

I've been trying to think were it all went so wrong at the back after such a good start to the season. The Stockport game springs to mind. Those two late goals for County really seem to have knocked the stuffing out of the lads and we haven't recovered since.

On the bright side, Stanley have already played all the top 8 in the division bar Shrewsbury. Hopefully The slump will end when we can play a few mid or lower table teams.

A good theory Larry but in the past we have tended to play worse against the teams who are around or lower than us & have, generally, a better record against the better teams - let's hope we don't follow that pattern this season

Re: Match Thread V Chesterfield

Things can change so quickly though. Look at Bradford, a fortnight ago their fans were screaming for the head of Taylor, they were 2nd bottom and and the fans were convinced they were heading for the Conference. Now they're winning at Bury and sit in the top half 3 points off the play offs.

Stanley are currently 3 points of 2nd bottom and 7 points off 7th, but a win in the next league game could tip the balance closer to the playoffs than the bottom spots.

Realistically, pre-season the talk amongst Stanley fans was of maintaining league status this season with such a young squad. I for one will be delighted with that. Anything mid table or above is a bonus. Enjoy the ride.

Ridiculous. Even at 35, still bagging and making defenders look silly. He only plays home games these days; but if he only plays 20-25 games all year, he'll probably still bag a dozen goals.

Re: Match Thread V Chesterfield

Charlie Barnett did fine. The wrong man was subbed. Some of our football tonight was great, particularly with Charlie, Proccy and Jimmy doing the business. Some Chesterfield fans were full of praise for our performance after the game and I must say I found it an enjoyable game, strangely enough. Our central defensive failings are costing us big time, obviously. Long is not ready for this level of first team football and was often pulled out of position by their clever front men, and Cisak was a bag of nerves. Slow to close down the attackers bursting through, he didn't give me any confidence at all, and so I'm afraid I would have to revert back to the smallest keeper in league football (probably?). At least he makes some saves. Once again our no.11 was a total waste of space, and how he keeps Putterill, Turner and almost anyone else on the bench is nothing short of scandalous.:(. Goodnight.

Re: Match Thread V Chesterfield

well, it was an unpleasant night to go to Chesterfield, but the new stadium is an ideal size for them

First half I thouh we played some decent football, the crossing from McConville left alot to be desired, but the midfield and forward line did ok, it was our defence which was lacking.
The first goal was poor from Long's point of view, his positioning and reading of the game where lacking.
The defence is suspetible to pace which is suprising as we dont play a high line anymore, not as high as in the past.
Second half we still played well in patches but again the defence just wasnt up to it.
The midfield is in need of some steel, an experienced ball winner who can stop the other teams play, neither Joyce or Proctor managed to do it last night.
I can see Coleman going back to 3-5-2 on saturday with the floating wing backs.

Thanks Redraine. I wondered how Barnett got on as I recalled a Tranmere fan informing us that he would probably operate in a wide attacking role, yet he has played most of his games for us as a holding midfielder (and very well for the most part, IMO). Certainly one of the better footballing brains in the team, methinks.

I must admit the first time I saw him play for Stanley he hardly seemed to break sweat in the first half. Coley must have got in his ear at half time and given him the hairdryer treatment. Ever since then he's impressed me with his workrate and he seems to me a good foil for Jimmy in midfield.
