Got to disagree with you Larry.

Stanley have been by far the better side. Six decent chances by my reckoning to Barnet's two.

The first goal was a ricochet inside a packed box and the second conceded when half the Stanley team were forward for a corner. In fairness it was the last minute of the half, and we've all urged our players to get forward for a late set piece haven't we?

Normally I'll be the first to tell it like it is when the Reds are losing and below par. This time they are losing and have been on top for long spells.

Unbelievable

Was today not the last of Kevin Long's loan spell? I'm sure his 2nd month expired on 11th Dec (today), or has he been kept on for a further month?

Personally, although the lad has improved during his loan spell, I'm not convinced he's done enough to be keeping Stanley's own players out of the team, some of whom are now probably getting a bit downhearted at the lack of chances coming their way.

To me, the best performances of the season all came in the first 10 or so games. Lots of chopping and changing since and the results have been up and down to say the least.

Correct. Unless he is any good at management he's probably better off at Stanley. If he is keeping players out then surely it's because he is better than them ?

Larry Lobster 11-12-2010 19:59

Re: Barnet Thread

It depends on the terms of the loan agreement. Some loanees have it written into the loan conditions that they must play, I'm not saying that's the case here, i just don't think it's in the long term interest of Stanley to borrow players at the expense of their on.

The loan market is actually termed "the emergency loan" but is abused by all clubs. I'm just not a lover of loan players at all. I much prefer to see the players who are contracted to a club given a fair crack of the whip.

Maybe a time will come when lower league clubs don't actually "own" any players, but have teams made up entirely of players loaned from the top 2 leagues. I hope not, but more and more loaned players seem to be making up teams these days.

Revived Red 11-12-2010 20:23

Re: Barnet Thread

It was one of those games where we could have played all night without scoring. Our shots were agonisingly close - one was cleared off the line and Hessey hit the bar. We seemed to dominate much of the game but without playing as fluently as we have been earlier in the season - and without scoring that vital goal.

I'm not happy about the defence. Phil is much better at centre back than full back. Please let's have Jonny Bateson back. His tackling, his speed in supporting a winger and his long throw-ins are all sadly missed. I also think that Luke Joyce was missed today.

Joe Jacobson had a great shot saved and had a reasonable game before being substituted. Ian Craney was no better than Ray Putterill or Andy Parkinson, and was too often caught in possession.

Not unless they change the rules, think the maximum is 5, maybe 6. From memory I think Stoke got promoted to the Premier League with the maximum of loanees. Not too sure it makes a lot of difference. You would like to think if players are contracted they would give more effort and loyalty. Sadly this is proffesional football not the real world we are discussing here

I don't think either Jacobson or Craney add anything to the existing squad at all and just clutter the midfield. One up front just isn't working and I would like to see Boulding starting up front with Gornell to go 4-4-2 , as we looked much sharper with the two up there late on today. Agree with R.R. about Phil/ Bateson as the suntan man is all at sea at the moment. For all our possession today we just didn't work the keeper again and I think our only effort on target was Proccy's late thunderbolt which nearly broke the crossbar. What a handy duo Barnet have up front with McLeod and Kabba, both of whom have physical presence and electric pace over 10 yards to get into the danger zone. Highlight of the day was the Ultras entertaining singing and the excruciatingly awful karaoki session coming back on the coach.:D

Frustrating game yesterday...

The best team in the first half with chances to show from it but poor defending while we were on the front foot and got caught on the break for the second goal which proved to be crucial. Defence needs to be tightened up big time, such a contrast from the start of the season as the attacking players are creating chances and they will be put away sooner or later.. heres hopin for 3 points next week against our old rivals!

maccawozzagod 12-12-2010 10:36

Re: Barnet Thread

i haven't watched anywhere near as much football this season as I would have liked but it's more than obvious that certain things aren't working. As stated by Shakermaker the defence in the first ten games was excellent - and was then chopped to pieces for one or two bad games. coleman has stated on more than one occasion that he thinks that Suntan would be a premier league defender if he was taller, and that in his mind is one of the best centre backs in the league. Why play him at full back? Football19 and a few others certainly no a lot more than me about 'football' and state the reasoning behind why Phil can't play this that and t'other, well find someone tall and with pace who can play alongside Phil rather than moving him out. 150 consecutive and consistent games at centre back then shunted out to accomodate an ageing and error prone Hessey and a borrowed defender who will go back to another club no better than what we have.

Michael Hall hasn't had a look in at all, Bateson made a stupid error for a sending off then disappeared off the radar, Richardson hasn't had any kind of run and Deano could and should have a look in at centre back if we're gonna keep chopping and changing. Jacobson could also play left if needed.

Craney, Ryan and Putterill? It's akin to the Lampard and Gerrard problem for England. Somehow Coleman managed to make it work until Razor got suspended but now that he is back we have another creative midfielder to accomdate as well. Would Capello have played Paul Scholes as well if he had gone to the World Cup? (in fact don't answer that ...)

Crosses into the box is what we are short of yet those in the squad who can deliver a ball aren't even travelling to some games. Maybe Turner isn't quite the polished gem yet, but he isn't going to be unless he gets games. He won't learn anything just training every day and needs 1st team action. Give him ten games and if he still isn't where he should be then ship him out either permanently or on loan.

All season we have deluded ourselves that we have a good squad and that we can seriously threaten in this league, well we can't. We're out of the cups and two points off the drop zone and that isn't the hallmark of a good team. Either the squad is crap or the manager is doing something wrong. We all know that Coley can be a great manager when he wants to be, but maybe he tinkers too much with the wrong things and not enough with the right things? Don't take that as a 'Coley out' call because it isn't anything of the sort, but he needs to pull his finger out this month or it is going to be a long hard second half of the season.

VALAIRIAN 12-12-2010 11:04

Re: Barnet Thread

Good to have the old Macca back ;)

I do not think that Hess is the problem, it is Long, he is forcing Phil to RB and as you said, Long will go back to Burnley, then we might revert back, who knows??

Cannot really agree with any of the loans/signings to the squad to be honest  Coley may/must know more about the reasons why than any of us, but:- Long? Why, when we have loads of defenders and as we have all stated, first 7/10 game we were soild at the back.... Put JJ in the same bracket! IC? Enough midfielders for 2 teams.... Still no strikers and what do we keep hearing game after game, "If only ?????? had put that chance away......" How long will/can we keep saying that????

Like Macca, I am not questioning his ability to manage, as I am in no position to do so, but, sometimes it appears obvious from another angle!!

Rant/sermon over, here's to 6 big points against Burton and (please,please) The Alex!!!!!! :D :D :D

shakermaker 12-12-2010 11:20

Re: Barnet Thread

Hopefully Andy Owens will get a run when Long returns to Burnley. I'd like to see a back four of Bateson, Edwards, Owens and Jacobson guarded by Joyce and Procter. Our defensive options are pretty straight forward, as the shape isn't up for much debate. It's the profligacy of the attack that desperately needs to be sorted out. It's not just the right players but finding the right formula. Do you drop an attacking midfield player and start Rory B alongside El Tel? Could do. However to me, Barnett, Ryan and Putterill are our best players on the ball in the opposition's half and all deserve starts. Then we have Craney who has undoubted ability to do well at this level, and we don't know the terms of this loan agreement. He may have to play every game he's available for. Harder than Footy Manager, this. :)

Pendle Red 12-12-2010 11:41

Re: Barnet Thread

It's all about opinions

The holding midfield role is the one that we struggle with, going forward as a unit we play good stuff and do create chances another striker alongside Gornell may work but would mean reverting to a more conventional 4-4-2?

The midfield for all their creativity as a whole to me don't do enough tracking back and following their man, there is no tough tackling midfield general with the exception of perhaps Jimmy Ryan.

The other problem we come up against regulary is more physical sides in terms of height which is again another struggle and was probably why Kevin Long was brought in?

The teams at the Top of League Two tend to be able to mix it with play into feet as we do but also have the ability to go more direct when needed to grind out results.

The standard of football I have witnessed played by Stanley this season so far has been generally good and asthetic on the eye when it clicks, as in the early part of the season when the team worked as a unit from back to front.

More recently form has become infrequent and something has gone adrift and at times has become a little frustrating and lumpy.

carpon 12-12-2010 12:16

Re: Barnet Thread

Personally speaking, I'm not a fan of the formation. All of a sudden we've become one dimensional regarding the formation ( Re : 4-2-3-1 or fancy 4-5-1 if you like ) and I think that is why we're struggling for results. If you make it easy for the opposition to suss out what formation and how we're going to approach the game, then half the battle is lost before we set foot upon the pitch.

If you look at the squad, In my own opinion, we've got too many midfielders. That too me dictates why Coley seems reluctant to change the formation. By playing the same formation at least he can accomodate some of the midfielders, however If the lads in midfield don't produce the goals and don't make chances for the sole striker...then the problems arise:o

The lack of frontmen has concerned me from day one this season and the worry for me is,If we don't move away from this one dimensional formation and If we don't get somebody else to play up alongside Gornell, we will be embroiled in a relegation scrap this season.

I'd personally look at playing the conventional 4-4-2 or even have a look at playing a 3-5-2. And signing another forward in January is a must. If it means getting rid of a midfielder to free up wages then so be it.

Totally agreed. Coley once more is saying we were the better team than the one we have just lost to. I think he is deluding himself. Barnet attacked and finished better than us. They succeded in preventing our forwards from getting into the danger areas and really threatening their keeper, who didn't make a save of note as far as I can remember. We did have plenty of half chances but these were snatched at and not converted. They had two dangerous front men who gave our defence a hard time, plus, very significantly a quick, elusive winger in Marshall. He gave Phil a roasting down the left and time after time got right down to the byline and delivered some really dangerous crosses which we were lucky not to concede from. They looked a far better side than their position suggests, but of course I don't think they had the pesky McLeod earlier in the season.

However cows in and around Accrington need not be too alarmed about the sales of banjos in the area; their backsides won't take any pounding. Lucky for the cows, Lucky for the Bees.

Like I put earlier, if McLeod was on their side yesterday we would have been beaten out of sight. We won, and that's to be celebrated. But we play like that against most teams and McLeod will be scoring consolation goals rather than winning goal.

Re: Barnet Thread

Redraine seemed to have summed it up until he said they were a better team than there position suggests.
They are the worst team i have seen this year! Read the live bbc comments, its has i saw it,all Acci!,they had 5 shots,Acci had 14,There goals were from a delected shot and direct from our corner.
They never put Acci under any sustained pressure, indeed it was us camped in there half for long periods.
In my opinion we just never got any midfielders getting beyond Gornell ( how many shots did ryan have?).
Two things may have caused this,Jacobson stayed out left and craney stayed farther forward, which meant Ryan was forced to operate on the right ,with Charlie and proccy centre,
At times it was a lazy 4 4 2 system,I am sure it wasnt meant to be like that.
Pass and move style of footy requires a great work ethic, but to throw 2 new lads in,who havent played much footy,is going to disrupt it,hence we started going long, with Bav just punting the ball down field.
Craney blew up with 30 mins to go,why did we leave him on?,did fleetwood insist??? lol

Re: Barnet Thread

I agree with new read about craney and jacobson, but hopefully they get better with match fitness.
What really disappionted me was when razor came on,it looked like he was disinterested ( prob due to only being sub),and made no effort tracking back when he lost posession.
I am one of his biggest fans, but no matter how good he is,Coleman will get rid of people whos attitude is not 100%
Proccy ended up doing the work of 2 men at one stage, and a lot of his work goes un-noticed

Re: Barnet Thread

I agree with what has been said in so many recent posts, especially the fact the much of Proccy's work is unnoticed.

I also agree about the work ethic. Jonny Bateson and Dean Winnard were essential to that work ethic at the start of the season. Their overlapping gave us width and made them into an extra forward, so giving the opposition defence more to think about. It was so easy for the Barnet defence - and it has been for others too. I agree about Bavs and the punt down the middle - that is reverting to tactics that have been tried and failed so often in the past. The season started with such great promise but it could be another battle against relegation.

Re: Barnet Thread

Revived red,I think you will find after 6 or 7 games, other teams scouts sussed this out and either pinned the fullbacks back or looked to exploit the space being left ( hence we started shipping goals in at an alarming rate).
Thats when you need to produce a bit of magic or make them come onto you.
Of all the teams we have played, how many teams come to Acci with fullbacks who attack?,not many

Re: Barnet Thread

Sorry, football19, but I don't really understand what you are saying. We all know that the likes of Leighton Baines, Ashley Cole etc are attacking full backs. The fact that we all know this doesn't prevent them from being attacking full backs. Our problem was that the work of our attacking full backs and midfielders was not being turned into goals. And this in turn inevitably put pressure on the defence. I'm not convinced that we were shipping goals because we had attacking full backs. The problem was too many individual errors.

It matters not that other teams may come to Accy without attacking full backs. They often come with other options such as wingers, fast and/or powerful strikers, defenders who can read a game.

Re: Barnet Thread

Some good points there revived red !,first and foremost defenders need to defend, getting forward is a bonus,There are 6 men in front of the back four, but rarely does anyone run the channels, when you play one up front,he ends up playing with his back to goal, trying to hold it up.
Your right , got a load of technical players, but no forwards or wingers with blistering pace,Any names in mind?,i remember the barnet lad,Adoahma, or something catching my eye,but hes starring in the championship now for Bristol city.
There was a ginger left winger who played for man utd ( played against us for fylde) who was quick, great crosser and scored goals.
Think his name was micheal burns, hed be worth a punt(if you play for man utd first eleven, your not a bad un),then again hes prob on more money at fylde !!! lol

Football 19 you are obviously well drilled in the technical & coaching side of football.

Can I ask you a couple of questions if you don't mind:)

We are where we are with that in mind what would be your starting eleven for Stanley be and why?

What formation would you play?

Revived Red 13-12-2010 20:15

Re: Barnet Thread

No-one especially in mind, football19. But I do now agree with you.

football19 13-12-2010 20:36

Re: Barnet Thread

Pendle red, thats a good question, but not one to sit on the fence,so here goes(assuming loan players can play)
I would change our system slightly away from home(bit tighter),but home games i would go
gk - Bav
lb - jacobson
rb - deano
cb- long
cb - edwards

holding mids -joyce and procci

attacking mids - ryan, barnett and razor if fit(which to me hes not) or parky

Striker - gornell

Iwould give the attacking mids licence to attack as proccy and joyce are two of the fittest in the club,so its insurance to plug any gaps.

Taking a chance with jacobson, but he looks a better defender than midfielder and deano gives you extra height when defending, plus he would get up and down all day, with again havin joyce to sit in.

Think Gornell is our best striker, although I like Boulding

Away from home i would go two banks of four, one up front and one in the hole, make it tight and difficult to beat

cashman 13-12-2010 21:23

Re: Barnet Thread

that don't look a bad eleven to me, not convinced about 1 lone striker though, oer the years i have watched footy, i go wi the best strikers hunt in twos.:)

football19 13-12-2010 21:41

Re: Barnet Thread

i know what you mean cashman, but i think its more about combinations,ie big man, little man etc,the problem is when you dont have the ball, you tend to get over-run in midfield if one doesnt drop in and help out,so it becomes a 4-5-1 when defending, its brave to leave two up top if you have not got the ball !!

Add Ryan Barnett craney and Terry to the old ones for parky Joyce boulding and lindfield and I think u might be onto something.

football19 14-12-2010 17:50

Re: Barnet Thread

rude dog, craney is already in the old ones !!!!!
ps Theres no height in your team(except for proccy),so i dont ever think the gaffer would go with that
