Prediction League – Game 28; v Hereford (home)

Exeter loanee defender Joe Heath, who joined the Bulls in November, has extended his loan period, and boss Jamie Pittman is looking to re-sign ex-Bulls defender Tony James, now at Burton; James left Edgar Street in 2006 having played over 270 games for Hereford in his first spell. Defenders they certainly need, because so far – in 29 games in all competitions – they’ve conceded 53 goals, including 4 at Chesterfield and Shrewsbury, and at home to Stevenage.

They’ve actually got a really odd record;
  • In their first 13 games of the season they won once, drew 3 and lost 9; they scored a total of 5 goals, never more than one in a game
  • In the next 5 they won 3 and drew 2 (including against us); they scored 17 in 5, putting 5 past Stockport (but then, don’t most teams – Stockport have conceded 5 in a game 5 times), 5 past Hythe in the FA Cup, and 4 past Northampton (come back of the season, having been 3-0 down at half time)
  • Of their next 7, they won none, drew 3 and lost 4; they scored 7 – nil twice, one goal three times and two goals twice
  • In their last four games, they’ve won the lot, scoring 10; Aldershot were beaten 2-1 away in the League, and Stockport 3-0 at home yesterday, and Lincoln and Wycombe were both beaten away in the Cup – Lincoln 4-3 in a replay of their Round 2 tie, and Wycombe 1-0 in Round 3, giving Hereford a 4th Round game at Hillsborough. The really odd thing is that Lincoln and Wycombe had both beaten Hereford in the “played 7 won 0” sequence
So – their record in the last four games slightly shades ours; however, our 4 games got us 10 points in the League, whereas their last 4 only got them 6. That said, they’re off the bottom – yesterday’s double-completing win over a hapless, hopeless Stockport took them above the Woeful Imps, who have 19 points (from 21 games), to Hereford’s 22 (from 23), Barnet’s 23 (from 25) and Stockport (24 from 26); goal differences are Lincoln -15, Hereford -14, Barnet -16 and Stockport -30 …….. Their main goalscorers are French-born striker Mathieu Manset, signed from Le Havre and apparently known to the fans as “The Beast” with 13, 8-club (including us) striker Stuart Fleetwood with 9 (why did Charlton buy him and then just give him one substitute appearance?), and midfielder Robert Purdie, on loan from Oldham, with 4.

Overall – P29 W8 D8 L13 F39 A53; home League form is P11 W1 (yesterday) D6 L4 F12 A17; away it’s P12 W4 D1 L7 F15 A24; overall, P23 W5 D7 L11 F27 A41 for 22 points and 23rd place. We’re 12th :) with 31 points from 23 (of which only 10 have been at Fortress Crown) and a goal difference of zero.:D

The deadline for entries is, as ever, scheduled kick-off time, which is 3pm on Saturday 22nd January. So; very win-able, surely? (even though we haven't beaten them since 06/07, when we won the home game 2-0) :o Goalfest? Dodgy single-goal struggle? It can’t be another 0-0 – can it? Whose is the leaky defence? Whose record is going to carry on for another week at least? Your call; your guess; your push up the (Prediction) League table towards the Golden Ticket ….

Good luck to everyone ………… and thanks for playing!

:alright:

Since Hereford have sold Mathieu Manset - their main goalscorer - to Reading this morning, and signed a striker (Jake Jervis, I think he was called) from Birmingham on loan - our "goals against" column might look a little better at 5pm than some of us feared :D

It will today, nige, but my point was that he's scored getting on for half their total for the season, and a 'new boy' may take a while to slot in ............ The argument weakens with the postponement

Prediction League – Game 28; v Hereford (home)

When your League 2 position as at New Year’s Eve is P20 W3 D6 L11 F20 A38, for 15 points and last place, it’s likely that you might hit the transfer window and the loan market to bolster your chances; Jamie Pitman (confirmed as full time boss in December) did just that – they’ve currently got 6 loan players and 3 recent signings – all in the last 2 months – including strikers Jason Price (33) from Carlisle, Waide Fairhurst (21) from Doncaster, ex Rapid Bucharest, Lincoln and Leyton Orient Adrian Patulea (26) from Romania, and Jake Jervis from Birmingham; the midfield is boosted by Steve Leslie (23) from Shrewsbury, Rob Purdie from Oldham and free agent Frenchman Wesley Ngo Baheng (ex Le Havre and Newcastle), and the defence picked up former FC Eindhoven and Oldham defender, Dutchman Stefan Stam from Yeovil and Daniel Preston from Birmingham. The impact has been considerable; they now lie 21st – 4 points above Burton (who have 2 games in hand), and 6 above both Barnet and Stockport, over both of whom they in turn have 3 games in hand; of their last 16 League games they’ve won 7, drawn 5 and lost just 4, and have added 26 points (now 41) and 23 goals. You’d have to say they look safe ……….

At home, they’ve only won twice :o; no-one can match that – even Stockport have won 4! Away, though, they’ve won 8 of 18 , and only the top 5 times in the Division can match or beat that, so Wednesday isn’t a formality. Their record in March is slipping a little, that said; a 1-0 win at Stevenage, a 1-1 draw at Port Vale, and 3 defeats – 3-0 at home to Bury, 2-1 at home to Barnet, and 4-0 at Southend – scored 3, conceded 10, 4 points collected; our March record is 3 wins, 3 draws and just one loss :D (our only loss in 10 games :D:D)

73 goals conceded and 56 goals scored in 43 games; they’ve shipped 4 in a match 5 times (4-0 defeats at Chesterfield, Shrewsbury and Southend, and 4-1 defeats at the Owls in the 4th Round FA Cup game, and also at home to Stevenage); 5 goals scored twice (away at Stockport and at home to Hythe United in the FA Cup Round 1, neither of which really counts); 4-3 at Lincoln in the FA Cup 2nd Round replay and the same score at Northampton (from 3-0 down); 3 goals in a game 3 times; 2 goals 7 times; a singleton on 15 occasions; nothing scored 14 times. No more than one goal in 29 of their 43 matches could be viewed as encouraging, since we’ve got a scoring record of 11 for and 5 against in our last 7 ………..

The main contributors to the 56 scored are Stuart Fleetwood – ex everyone, really (including us, briefly) – with 15, former Le Havre striker Mathieu “The Beast” Manset – now departed permanently to Reading – with 13, Oldham’s midfielder Rob Purdie with 5 and Joe Colbeck, once of Bradford City and Oldham, with 4; eight others have 3, 2 or 1, including Waide Fairhurst, who has 3 from 9 games.

The deadline for entries is, as ever, scheduled kick-off time, which is 7.45pm on Wednesday 30th March (I assume that’s because Hereford have a Sunday game against Crewe). An important game, we might all think, and – as well – a chance to improve the poor record we have against them in the League; W1 D2 L4 of the 7 played – our only win being in March 07 at home, when David Brown and Peter Cavanagh scored in our 2-0 triumph. We need this, and I doubt it’ll be 8-2 :p (although I live in hope! :D); surely a three-pointer, but by what score? Get predicting, Ladies and Gents; 9 games left!

Scores already posted before the postponement on 22nd January will, of course, stand, unless you want to change your guess; in either case it’s ……………..

Good luck to everyone ………… and thanks for playing!

:alright:

It's so much more fun doing this after a result like that ..... :)

49 entries for this game, 3 for them, 2 for a draw and the rest for us. Of the pessimists, only DaBeast (was) in the Top Ten, so very little movement amongst the leaders.
:jimbo:
Full marks for Cashman and Kiwi John. Dave in Germany got our 4 right and a bundle of us forecast a clean sheet. Wynonie got the gap right - but 5-1 only brought him 3 points  along with most everybody else.

So to the table and KJ pulls CmonStanley's lead down to 3 points. Valairian now 9 behind Kiwi, with 3 more 1 behind him.

Our 90th player entered this week, Rob249 picking up 3 points with an adventurous 5-2 forecast to join the table at 74=. Top 50 table attached.

Roll on Northampton :D
