Prediction League Game 29; Crewe Alexandra (away)

Crewe Alexandra

V

Accrington Stanley

Prediction League – Game 29; v Crewe Alex (away)

One of two sides which – through postponements – we still haven’t played this season (Burton Albion being the other), Crewe are sitting nicely in the League, right in the play-off mix; they’re currently 6th, with 38 points from 25 and the best goal difference in the Division apart from Chesterfield (with whom, you’ll remember, they drew 5-5 back in October). To be fair, 4 points cover the places from Rotherham (41 points from 24) in 3rd down to and including Cheltenham (37 points from 25 in 9th place), so it’s tight at the top …….. Their home form at Gresty Road is P12 W6 D3 L3 F26 A11, against our away form of P13 W2 D7 L4 F11 A19; perhaps this time we aren’t the form team. :o

Since the postponed first game between us on Boxing Day they’ve played 6 (and have a game against Bradford this Tuesday); of those 6 they’ve won 4 and lost 2, but the bad news is that those 4 wins include all 3 home games (Northampton 2-0, Wycombe 3-0 and Port Vale 2-1); they’ve only conceded that one goal in their 4 wins, but 5 in the two losses – 2-1 at Torquay and 3-2 yesterday at Aldershot, although – until their defence went walkies - they looked good for the points there as well.

Not many January changes in personnel, but Calvin “Couldn’t Hit The Floor With His Hat” Zola seems to have fallen spectacularly from grace, from goal-scoring hero – it’s not very long ago that Dario Gradi was saying that Zola ‘wasn’t going anywhere’ in the January transfer window (in which case why didn't he play him?) - to "surplus to requirements", and he’s just been signed by Burton Albion (which probably saves him moving house, anyway :)), having been courted by Northampton (who then promptly signed the prolific (76 goals in 245 games) 26 year old striker Shaun Harrad from Burton instead).

They’ve scored 58 in 30 matches in all competitions; leading scorers (the good ones tend to hunt in pairs) are Clayton Donaldson (with 15) and Shaun Miller (with 12); eleven other players are on the list as well, including 20 year old midfielder Ashley Westwood with 5, and striker Byron Moore and defender David Artell have 4 each, but none of those three have scored since the turn of the year.

The deadline for entries is, as ever, scheduled kick-off time, which is 3pm on Saturday 29th January. How many other games are there where Stanley and Alexandra can play against each other on equal terms? (Answers on a postcard to Chimer, please ;) ) Last season’s games finished 5-3 :D and 1-5 ; will something similar happen again? If so, which way? Who’ll be smiling (:)) come 5pm? It might be you, if you guess the score right – and it’s getting tough at the top ……..

Good luck to everyone ………… and thanks for playing!

:alright:

Yup, ok, Crewe won their 5th game out of the last 7, their 4th on the run at home, and moved up to 3rd in the table by beating Bradford City 2-1 last night ..............

BUT .....................

Clayton Donaldson was sent off just on half time for "putting his head against an opponent's head and then moving it forward" (sounds like what used to be called a headbutt :o)

I'm no expert on FA Disciplinary, but that sounds like a 3 game ban (no signs yet of Crewe appealing) ..............

If it is a ban, does it start on Saturday? Ryan Taylor (their loanee keeper from Chelsea) was sent off on Saturday for handling outside the box, lost his appeal, and was banned for last night's game, so it seems that bans start immediately ..........

Anybody know? As their leading goalscorer (now with 16 - he got the first last night) I'd prefer it if he isn't playing than if he is ......... :D

:alright:

Prediction League – Game 29; v Crewe Alex (away)

They’re a real enigma, are Crewe; the 7 games they played up to and including the 3-2 defeat at Fortress Crown yielded them just 4 points; at home, one win (2-1 against Bradford), one draw (1-1 against Gillingham) and one loss (1-0 to Stevenage), and four defeats on the road – 3-2 at our place, 3-1 at Rotherham, 6-2 at Northampton and 3-2 at Aldershot; scored 10, conceded 18. They haven’t won any of their last 3 away games either – defeats by 3-1 at Bury, 1-0 at Macc and 2-1 at Oxford on Saturday last – making it 7 consecutive away losses; at home, though, they’ve won their last three – 4-1 over Burton, 1-0 over playoff-chasing Southend, and 2-0 over Chesterfield (don’t forget 5-5 earlier in the season against the League leaders either), and in total, 7 of their last 9. Can you go up winning at home and losing away? Probably not, but we’ll see. :p

Their home record is P18 W10 D4 L4 F36 A15; fairly scary; overall it’s P37 W14 D9 L14 F68 A56 for 51 points and 12th – 1 point and one place behind us, with two games more played; after last season’s 5-3 and 5-1 games, we had just the 5 goals at our place on Feb 22nd – Charlie Barnett on 12, Ian Craney on 47 and Sean “Golden Boots” McConville on 75 giving us the points.:D

Despite “68 for” (plus 7 more in their 5 various cup games) they don’t score by the hatful every time; blank sheet 5 times, one goal 17 times, 2 in a game on ten occasions, and ten times they’ve hit 3 or more – 6 occasions scoring 3, 4-1 v Burton, 4-2 against Macc in the JPT, 5-5 against Chesterfield and 7-0 over Barnet early on; they also got a 6-2 smacking at Northampton :o; worth noting, though, that they’ve only got more than 2 goals twice in their last 18 ……..

Their leading scorers (the good ones tend to hunt in pairs) are 6’ 1” Yorkshire-born Clayton Donaldson – who made his debut with Hull and joined Crewe in 2008 from Hibernian - who currently has 20; Crewe Academy graduate Shaun Miller – who’s 24, and who’s been at Crewe for 17 years, has 15; two other Academy graduates (striker Byron Moore and midfielder Ashley Westwood) have 6 and 5 respectively, and ex Rotherham, Shrews, Mansfield, Chester and Morecambe defender David Artell has 5 as well (he hit 8 in season 09-10 for the Shrimps); two other players have 4 each, two have 3, one has 2 and four have a singleton each

The deadline for entries is, as ever, scheduled kick-off time, which is 7.45pm on Tuesday 22nd March. We’ve already got one guess for 8-2, and Wynonie hasn’t gone yet! :D Real crunch time, this; win this and the dream is surely on ……. :) Will we? By what score if we do? Or are we back to 0-0? Who knows? Guesses (new, old or changed) as soon as you like, if you please ….

Good luck to everyone ………… and thanks for playing!

:alright:

OK - 49 entries for this one, 14 correctly going for the draw but only our leader going goalless and taking 5 points - that's the way to do it :).

Kiwi John taking 3 points, but none for Val or Wolves Reds, so things are opening up a bit at the top. Table attached.

Interestingly, although most of the changes after the original postponement moved in our direction, a few went the other way despite the fact that we're above Crewe in the league now and we weren't then

Nelly the Valiant rather spoiled his average with an 8-2 Stanley forecast. I guess that reflects local tensions :D
