Confidence

12 ganes to go, a few wins off the play-offs with games in hand. How confident are you that we could actually make them this year? Is the squad right to challenge? Can JC/JB avoid a repeat of last year?

Play-offs?? Play-offs are for also-rans! I'm supremely confident that we're going to make the automatics...no sweat! :Banane40:

Re: Confidence

due to the fact that there was little difference between the play off spots and third if we had beat Gillingham I had sneaky hopes that would have catapulted our confidence towards the auto's! I think that would be way too much though now.

If we beat Port Vale then that will instill the confidence that the play offs is a deserving reward for some of our play this season.

But in all honesty I think the season will peter out in much the same way as last seasons did, with a failure to rest key players at the right time resulting in playing 2 or 3 games having had to make a handful of changes all at once. Edwards is one card off a 2 (?) match ban for reaching 10 yellows, Ryan appears to have been playing for weeks with a knock and could quite easily have to sit out a match or two. Imagine losing both of those two at once with maybe a red card for someone else thrown in?

We have a squad and if we use it correctly then I think we have a really good chance of reaching the play offs.

I have calculated that we will finish in 9th place in the league

Re: Confidence

Bearing in mind Acci were once again favorites for the drop, they are now 15 points clear with 2 games in hand !, I would personally settle for watching a great group of young lads trying to play the game the right way, encouraged by a very knowledgeable manager.
Whatever happens i have been entertained more than disappointed this season.

Re: Confidence

I agree. Let's just concentrate on how well we have done this season. Despite all the off field shenanigans and wages not being paid we have given the mighty Newcastle United a scare in front of the nation, and stayed in the league comfortably, with sublimely entertaining football to boot.

If we do make it into the play-offs fantastic!!! But personally Im wary of banding the P word about, becasue it's sods law that if we get our hopes up the wheels will fall off. :)

*cough* fairly confident if we beat Vale *cough* ;)

If - as you predicate - we beat Port Vale 9-3 on Saturday, so am I :)

Not sure what Nelly will say, though, if he sees your prediction ;)

Spot on about squad rotation Macca, beats me that we are playing 2 games a week, week in - week out, on heavy pitches (Wycombes was worse than ours!!) and we have the ready made replacements like Razor sitting on the bench, then getting 5 mins????

Against a very poor Burton side, we were 3 up on 67 mins, we should have brought 2 subs on then to rest players, always keep one up your sleeve, but it took an age to bring the subs on??

But, what do I know???

:) :) :)

and then Joyce (who seems to be one of the fittest players and not a permanent name on the sheet) for Murphy was one of the subs! but like you said, whadda we know?

Some pretty interesting thoughts on the thread

Confidence must be high, we are over achieving in terms of perhaps budgets, crowd sizes etc. but the bar is only as high as you set it yourself.

I would like to think that given the correct rotation and judging each fixture on it's own merits we can push on still that lttle bit more and not just be known as a good footballing side but one that when the chips are down can grind out results as all Top end sides seem to do.

The more the results go for us the more pressure will result with sides looking to claim our scalp but the plus side is if momentum carries on with results and table position coupled with the off the field side of things clicking into place it may carry us forward with even greater tenacity on the field which one would hope would bring the numbers at the Crown up with the forward momentum.

It's certainly gripping long may it continue:)

well thats the key innit Pendle? If Eric and Dave pack their bags and climb on their tandem quick enough, how much of a boost would that be to the player, fans and town!!!!!!!!! I reckon the surrounding hype (come on Ilyas, let us know more aobu tthe new stadium) could be worth a point on its own.

Re: Confidence

having retired to the south coast, I've only managed to see Stanley once so far this term. But from a distance I'm 'seeing' an improving team that lacks clinical finishing in front of goal. If we had that in our armour then many of our drawn games would have been 3 pointers and we would be disappointed to only make the playoffs. Sharpshooters come at a price and Accrington town is too full of Rovers/Clarets fans to do Stanley's coffers any good. (perhaps we can pick up Bobby Grant on the rebound). So much as I admire the teams exploits and sulk for England if we don't get a result, I think playoffs are more a dream than a realistic prospect this season for that one reason.

A play off final place could make a hell of an impact in to that

(perhaps we can pick up Bobby Grant on the rebound).maybe with barraclough going he may not be in favour and boy would he love reeling off to the clayton end again after scoring the goal that put's us in the play offs or maybe wemberlee

Re: Confidence

I would think the club won't be able to sign anybody until the accounts are sent in

Re: Confidence

Imho, automatic promotion, meaning no play-off campaign to generate extra interest, would be a very mixed blessing. Amazing to get back to Div 3, but if followed by a season with home support initially only at this season's level .... what would happen if it was a losing season (which would have to be most likely) ....... ?

Playoff final, win or lose, would be better for our long-term prospects, I reckon.

Re: Confidence

i was one of those who thought that we weren't ready for league 2, and perhaps we still aren't!, but the fact remains its better to get there and come back down than to not do. The difference in TV money and Youth Academy is vast between leagues 1 and 2 - so providing your expenditure (ie wages) doesn't rise stupidly then you have a chance to trouser some extra coin. Sticking with the same squad has always been a trait of Coleys so perhaps the wage bill (when its paid) wouldn't rise too much. But any extra players you bring in would want want paying commensurately.

But I do agree that the play offs is the real winner and would be what we need with regards to trying to attract extra fans. A trip to Old Trafford with 10,000 local floaters may persuade 1000 to stay on.

However, its been really embarrassing being the club with the worst facilities, ground, crowds, boardroom, at this level let alone another step higher! Had EW or Do'n been around for the long haul then I'd have hated to go another step, with IK pulling the strings there'd be a chance we could make a go of it.

Pendle Red 18-03-2011 05:19

Re: Confidence

The play-offs are still the best chance for Stanley if they were to go up

Given the extra revenue, self promotion & feelgood factor that goes with it and generates

Also would perhaps give us the best chance of keeping the nucleus of the team together failing that maybe another summer of other Clubs cherry picking

To be honest I saw that sub as Joyce was on a yellow card, we were 3-0 up and he plays in a position that it would be easy enough to pick up another booking before the game ended.
