http://www.accringtonstanley.co.uk/g...%20stewart.jpgThe club was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of George Stewart, a Stanley legend from our previous days in the Football League.

The Scottish striker scored 136 goals in 182 matches for Accrington Stanley. He signed in 1954, and broke the club's goalscoring record in 1955/56, scoring 35 goals including three hat tricks, before moving to Coventry in 1958. He is remembered fondly by those who recall him playing here, and his name known by many as a true Stanley legend who is very much a part of the history of our great club.

George passed away on Saturday 4th June, aged 84. His funeral takes place at 1pm on Wednesday 8th June at Buckie North Church in Banffshire, Scotland. The thoughts of us all are with his friends and family at this sad time.

Accrington Stanley Legends like you never die or fade from our collective memories; you may fade into the background of history but for every goal scored on Stanley Territory will raise a cry that will be heard, even in the evening sky where Stanley Legends never die.

George Stewart was me first football idol, a great centre forward, great in the air, scored some cracking goals, very sad to hear of his passing, made a young cashy very happy. R.I.P.

Like Cashy, George was the idol of my youth. Never actually saw him play as his tenure began after I was exiled down south but boy how I loved to read about his performances week in week out. RIP Mr Stewart sir - your memory will live on with Stanley fans a good while yet.

Legend was the term I used when I spoke to his wife about 2 years ago after tracing him to Buckie as I reported on this Forum at the time.

What I particularly remember about him was how good he was in the air. When you consider at that time they played with the old heavy leather balls, which when wet would become even heavier, its remarkable really.

I can remember him playing for Stanley, was a great Striker, well Centre foeward in the good old days RIP George

Like others, I never had the chance to see George play, I was only 3 when Stanley sold him to Coventry, However, I have heard a lot about him. RIP you will be remembered for being a legend whilst at Stanley.

One of the best, fast, skillful and great with the head. Scored 100 goals in 123 games. A true Stanley legend R.I.P.

Yes his wife mentioned all that including the heavy leather balls that got even worse in the wet and she told me George would never kick a goal if he could head it.

She told me the family believe these were major and even decisive factors in George suffering from Alzheimers' in his latter days.

Thought of him as I walked through a thunderstorm to Leeds library at 1pm.

Sad that heading a ball could lead to Alzheimers. But a great player, a true Stanley Legend.
