One word
POOR!

Redraine 13-08-2011 20:01

Re: Late Late Southend United Thread

Plus points:-
Murdoch in goal looks like the answer to our prayers.
Proccy was again 110% all action.
Deano did fine.
McIntyre has a great free kick on him.
Taylor is a breath of fresh air.
Guthrie shows great promise.
Minus points:-
Craney and Lindfield were terrible.
Joyce's distribution was awful, though he worked his socks off.
McIntyre lived up to his reputation as a hothead.
The rest were average/poor.

smudgie 13-08-2011 21:09

Re: Late Late Southend United Thread

I think Redraine has just about summed it up.

The main difference for me is that last year playing the formation we do, we had Jimmy, Sean and Craney/Barnett/Putterill helping Gornell up front.

This year we have Lindfield and an unfit Craney. Theres your answer in my opinion.

Feel abit sorry for Guthrie, he's only a young lad, but if he has no help then what can he do??

On the plus side........... as redraine says, Murdock looks class in goal, Nat Taylor looked superb for me today. Only his second ever game and his touch and pace will certainly be an asset this season.

Both of their goals where defensive errors, surely it would be an advantage to put an experienced head like Hessey in the middle????

We could have been 5-1 down at Half Time, fair play to Southend, their left winger ripped us to shreds in the first 45 minutes.

Just a shame we cant see Coid in action in the near future.

Make no mistake Coley & Bell have a massive task on their hands this season.

2 or even 3 forward's / attacking midfielders needed for me ASAP !

Re: Late Late Southend United Thread

Lindfield was most certainly not terrible. In fact he was one of the few (along woth Procter, Joyce and Winnard) to make any impact today. Craig managed to break a good few times but had no outlay option. All the rest were absent. Kern Millar was the one that had a NIGHTMARE today.

It's admirable attempting to play 'football the right way' but this year we do not have the quality to do so. I say drop the 4-2-3-1 and go 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 as that's the only way we're going to score this season.

Pendle Red 14-08-2011 06:19

Re: Late Late Southend United Thread

Not many positives from yesterday's performance a few individual sparks but...

In essence as others have said we are playing a system which worked wonderful last season the difference now is we at times look like a team that just met and are trying to get to grips with the system.

Too many off days yesterday with wayward passing, link up play not happening enough, the ball not sticking when it did go forward which made it far to easy for the opposition to clear their lines and be first to the ball putting us straight on the back foot as well as looking nervous.

It is still early days and maybe too early to be pressing the panic button just yet and there are rumours of possible players coming in that could change the style of our game?

At least it's only a couple of days before hopefully we can put it right against the Bantams.:)

May have turned down the harshness on the team and reined in the unending love for Craig Lindfield but generally happy with it :D

I'd just like to add that Nat Taylor fully deserved his Man of the Match award as he was the only one who showed attacking promise, made space and created chances. If it's true about what Coley said about him winning the award on Radio Lancs post-match, I'm pretty disgusted with the gaffer.

Re: Late Late Southend United Thread

I think we are not giving any credit to southend, who player for player, have a better and more experienced team.
They did there homework on Acci and did what Acci did to teams last year.
They worked there socks off,got inbetween Accis lines and caused all kinds of problems, winning most key battles.
Saying that, the stats show, after they dominated the first half, they only had one shot on target.
Miller tried, but his inexperience was exposed by Dickinson, who dominated the ariel battle, pinning him on numerous occasions. He then fell into the trap of trying to gain space by dropping off which creates even more problems.
Now heres the problem!!,the midfield three are too lightweight and not fit enough, getting knocked off the ball to easily and in the first half Gutherie was in the pocket of Coughlan (whos still a great player),and his first touch deserted him.
Joycy was the only player showing for the ball, but his options just disappeared(along with a few players).
Proccy needs to get involved more and wanting the ball.
long and Deano played ok,but it was poor defending by Long for the second goal as he never got in the right position to defend the second ball and volleyed against there man(freak goal),were Deano should have buried the late header from a corner.
All that said,we played poorly against a good side and nearly nicked a point.
PS we desperately need new hungry players in the squad, with fire in there bellies,to had competition for places.
PPS last years team would have beaten them easily

He said that in his opinion Kevin McIntyre should have got motm & that, no disrespect to Nat Taylor but for the sponsors to give it to a lad who'd come on as a sub for twenty minutes was making a mockery of it & if it carries on like that they won't be given the option to choose a motm in future.

Unbelievable. McIntyre was poor from where I was on the Clayton End - a 50p head and poor distribution. Mind you, the whole team played ale house football so maybe unfair to single him out. White boots when you play like that in a 4th Division game is a no no though. Thought Taylor fully deserved his MOTM and I'm disappointed in Coleman's quote.

Got to disagree with Coley on mc intyre,he gave away a penalty, got sent off, when were still in the game and his only meaningful contribution was a free kick which the keeper held.
Agree with him about Nat Taylor though, who showed a bit of energy and freshness, but how many shots/chances did he create?,and he showed a bit of inexperience on a couple of occasions(when defending),indeed when they broke in the second half he was done for pace!!.Not knocking the lad,but M O M ?,no chance, way behind Long, the keeper, deano and joycy

Absolutely pathetic. In my opinion, Taylor really put in the effort and commitment that was so woefully lacking in many of the others. The fact that he was only on for 20 minutes is a damning indictment of Coley's judgement anyway.

However, it's not down to my opinion or Coley's. It's down to the people who sponsored the match, and who paid money to Stanley for the privilege of doing so. For Coley to threaten to take away the MOTM option because yesterday's sponsors dared to disagree with him is like a spoiled child threatening to take his ball home.

Bet yesterday's sponsors are felling really chuffed about Coley's comments too. I'm sure that'll encourage them to repeat the exercise next season!

Not really. He made the goal with his free kick which the keeper couldn't hold. He was sent off at 90+3 minutes, so I'm not sure that your comment about being still in the game has any relevance. I actually thought he played well when he wasn't getting in trouble with the ref., good in the tackle and supporting the attack well, in spite of the white boots which someone on here objected to.:D
I do agree with you about how Southend did a job on us, even though the winner came against the run of play, and I think Coley has a point about being a bit unlucky not to get a draw, on reflection. However, any team which can afford to have a living legend to come off the bench, like Millwall's all time record 132 goal scorer Neil Harris, is going to have too much up front for our inexperienced centre halves.:(

Re: Late Late Southend United Thread

No sponsors for our FIRST HOME game of the NEW season?!

What the heck is the club playing at?

Also empty seats aswell around the ground? Weve had months for all this planning......

One of the worst games of football ive seen from a stanley side and we look so lightweight with nothing to us.
Craney yesterday should not of been playing and doesnt deserve to play on tuesday!

Alot of people agreed together yesterday that how bad the first teamers play in football league games doesnt matter as they know they will be playing the week after because our squad isnt good enough. Last year people had to fight for positions and if you played bad you was dropped! This year there is no-one good to replace the bad forming players!

Its early doors but its not promising so far...

Wynonie Harris 14-08-2011 17:46

Re: Late Late Southend United Thread

No sponsor for yesterday? Very worrying. Maybe the commercial dept need as big a kick up the backside as Craney does?

So who did choose the MoM?

Redraine,I still cant agree about mcIntyre,I never seen him go over the half way line in the first half!!!,heading was poor and generally tried to kick the ball as far as possible.
His defending of the second balls was average at best, probably due to him not playing there for a while.
Long was my M O M ,but I would have had him marking Dickinson, who took a liking to Miller.

OK, I posted the name of the wrong Kevin - apologies, my mistake - but for me the issue was not who Coley thought should have got the motm award, after all we all have different opinions on that after most games & I'm sure Coley is no different in that respect.
The problem I had was that he chose to say, publicly, that the lad who received it shouldn't have done & for a player who has just made his league debut & worked damned hard during his time on the pitch to have his manager say that must have been a crushing blow & in my opinion was well out of order
