Belated, half-arsed Swindon thread
Let's face it, we were beaten by a very good footballing side today. However we didn't help ourselves at all. We were pants.
Thought Coley was right to take Kurtis off at half time (though would've been better having some forethought and not starting him) as he's out of his depth. He's not yet good enough for league football. Why Coley took Amond off however is a mystery to me. Had we played with Amond up top rather than Craney for the second half, we may have looked more promising up there, but as it was we were absolutely lacking any threat. Deano's clearly injured. Joycey's role has been figured out and was ineffective. Erm, positives? Dobie looked a player. Murphy played well. Di Canio made me laugh. |
Re: Belated, half-arsed Swindon thread
I've never been a Procter fan but I must say I agree with the comment from the back of the main stand as he was substituted. "And Craney stays on!"
|
Re: Belated, half-arsed Swindon thread
We were very, very poor - no direction!! Plus points, there were none, cannot agree about Murph!!!!
|
Re: Belated, half-arsed Swindon thread
we were poor is an understatement! we were shocking! we had no goal threat what so ever an would not have scored in a month of sundays. we have no quality going forward an the defence can only soak up enough pressure before its inevitable that the other team are going to score, felt sorry for long an winnard today.

we just werent at the races today although swindon are a decent side. Why was Murdoch dropped? Found this strange. The new lads looked good.

Re: Belated, half-arsed Swindon thread
A thoroughly depressing afternoon, and I must apologise to Valarian and his mate for my language, as I got more and more frustrated as the match went on. It was obvious to me from Wednesday night that Joyce and Proccy are below par at the moment, and to see Charlie and Coid on the bench was a real sickener. Proccy looks lost in the more advanced role he has been playing recently, and Joyce's form has disappeared. If Coley wanted the Reds to burst out of the blocks to ensure a better first half than we usually have, then that hope went out of the window as Swindon buzzed around our static midfield from the kick off, and kept the pressure on for the next 45 minutes. We are generally poor at building attacks when under pressure, and the first half was a classic demonstration of how we struggle. Misplaced passes, balls constantly hit straight into touch and hoofball clearances resulted in Swindon on the front foot almost continually. I know we haven't a pot to pee in, and can't attract the more skillful players, but surely we can do better than this?.
It is depressing to see Proccy so demoralised and ineffective, but I hope Coley is not playing him out of position in order to accommodate Murphy in midfield? Bad idea. Worrying times. |

The above post sums it up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Belated, half-arsed Swindon thread
Not good enough really, you could make half-hearted excuses like mid-week game, grass looked liked it needed cutting, few players carrying injuries, but the reality is teams have sussed us out.
Make us go long and theres a good chance you will get something out the game. Last few years you have had Mullens,Symes and Gornell to hold the ball up,now were relying on a young inexperienced lads. If you dont hold the ball up,it kills your runners, and players stop making them. First half,Proccy and Almond in to give us width?,Craney sat in the hole and staying there!,and Gutherie just got bullied. The defence looked hesitant to say the least, and were stretched in all directions. They were a decent team, who worked hard, and kept there shape, but too many players under-performed today A bad day at the office. :(:(:( |
Re: Belated, half-arsed Swindon thread
Thought Swindon were a damn good side, never sat back on a 2 goal lead, played footy until the death.! having said that i saw no commitement at all from stanley this afternoon, Balls played up in the air, which only the giant No4 fer swindon was ever gonna win, apart from n obvious penalty, that was ignored by the ref n pillock of a linesman,( who must be training to be a ref)we never created a worthwhile chance in the game, agree Guthrie aint up to league standard so far, thought Proccy n Murphy were abysmal, my Man Of Match would have to be De-Canio, cos he entertained me if nowt else.

Re: Belated, half-arsed Swindon thread
Worst performance I've seen from Stanley - Totally devoid of creativity, no positional awareness and a bad habit of hoofing the ball up to a lone Guthrie surrounded by a crowd of black Swindon shirts. He isn't a player who's suited to holding up long balls, especially when the increasingly ineffective Craney doesn't offer support.
I can't say one way or the other as to whether Guthrie is up to playing up front as the service and support he gets is pretty dire. You can't question his effort though which is more than can be said of a few other players out there. On the other hand Swindon were very good - they were first to every ball and even when they went ahead, looked hungry for more. If they play like that every week they'll do well this season. |

Re: Belated, half-arsed Swindon thread
I'm surprised that Lindfield isn't playing. He's played really well in the games he's featured in this season, offering us some direct attacking threat that we don't have at the moment.
I think there's a big problem with the shape we're playing and tactics we're using at home. All the opposition have to do it send a scout up, see that we put all our play through Luke Joyce, mark him out of the game and hey presto we have nothing. I'd like to see us mix things up and play 4-4-2 at home, or maybe 4-4-1-1, just to bring some width to our game that we're crying out for. Something like: Murdoch/Dunbavin Murphy Long Hessey Winnard Lindfield Joyce Procter Dobie Craney Amond I don't know; Coley's the one who sees all the players every day and knows what they're capable of. But it's clear something needs to change. We're not winning away so we can't let our confidence at home disappear like it did yesterday. |
Re: Belated, half-arsed Swindon thread
I agree,thought Dunbavin did ok.
Interesting to read Swindon brought in 4 loanees yesterday,to give them a bit more energy,it certainly worked,as we were made to look pedestrian at times,is this the avenue Coley may go down as we seem to be gathering a few loanees ??? |
Re: Belated, half-arsed Swindon thread
Whilst i aint Bavs biggest fan,i agree so far as his last 2 performances go, he certainly aint let anyone down, also agree wi shaker, the shape n tactics have been well sussed at home, so summat needs to change n quickly.

Re: Belated, half-arsed Swindon thread
In a nut shell - I was so BORED!! De Cannio & swindon fans was the only entertainment! It was a red pants performance, lack lustre & un-inspiring, I'm glad I had fresh air that was it despite feeling so ill after not worth it on match performance.

Re: Belated, half-arsed Swindon thread
Gutted I missed the game, 1st home game ive missed in 2 years :( , but by the sounds of it, I didnt miss much???
Maybe its time to drop the Joyce/ Proccy/ Craney trio??? Coley had them all in training today btw. ;) |
Re: Belated, half-arsed Swindon thread
What does Charlie have to do to get a start??? He is half way there as he is a Scouser?????

Kern Miller Wes Fletcher Padraig Amond Kevin Long Tom Bender James Spray Luke Dobie Will Hatfield I may even have forgotten someone .............. Fletcher and Lindfield not even in the squad for yesterday - we had midfield options in reserve but not many attacking options. Charlie and Danny Coid on the bench didn't make much sense to me; Kurtis and Padraig didn't get a sniff, and Craney was conspicuous only by his absence. Nobody played the Symes role of holding the ball up; no-one ever put his foot on the ball and took control either ....... Fact was, Swindon were bigger, tougher, faster, craftier and much more up for it than we were on the day. They played wide, quick and clever, we played hoofing or heading it back to them ......... We looked clueless all afternoon, sad to tell....... But it won't be like that on Friday! ;) By the way, who was Man of the Match? :o |

You can only have 5 loanees in a match day squad so some of them are bound to miss out. Obviously Bender's out for another week or two but I would imagine some will be going back soon.

To be honest Cashy,I have noticed that for a while now.For a bloke whos around 6-3,he loses hell of a lot of headers and tends to moan more than ever instead of doing his talking on the pitch.Maybe hes being weighed down with the captaincy,I dont know, but he needs to start getting back to basics and winning ,headers, tackles and playing the simple ball, instead of trying to do other peoples jobs

Re: Belated, half-arsed Swindon thread
Always thought Proccy was a mirror to the players around him - in my opinion he plays as good as those he plays with - it's the reason he started with us in the lower divisions and worked his way up with the team.
But then again I also thought Craney played pretty well on Saturday, he is a play maker he creates from just behind the striker, how is he ever going to have an effect on the game when it is just pelted over the top of his head every bloody time. In the second half I'll agree he was ineffective but he was played totally out of position, he hasn't got height and he hasn't got pace, what the hell was he doing as a lone striker. |

I thought exactly the opposite sam, craney just never got on the ball in the first half, but at least gave there centre backs a game in the second half

Re: Belated, half-arsed Swindon thread
Thought craney was one of the few to come outa it wi any credit, meself.
|
Re: Belated, half-arsed Swindon thread
This is what bothers me about Craney. On numerous occasions on Saturday he got on the ball with a good first touch, but then was immediately tackled out of it by the opposition. He has lost the ability which used to enable him to burst through the tackles and set things up. Contary to what SamF says, he received plenty of ball to feet but was unable to make use of it. He was a magnificent player for us in the promotion season, very dynamic and also scoring plenty of goals from open play, direct from free-kicks and even direct from corners on several occasions! I think he is being picked on past reputation alone, unfortunately.:(

We know he has ability, but obviously not fit enough,so for me, if he starts,he has clear instructions to run himself into the ground, until the tank is empty and comes off,and builds his match fitness! and will gain more respect from the fans. |
Re: Belated, half-arsed Swindon thread
I wasn't there on Saturday so I can't comment on that one specifically. But I have noticed a trend this season that shows us playing well in away games (notably Oxford and Plymouth) but lacklustre in some home games. I can't help wondering if this is the result of the weight of expectation after last season.
I am also intrigued by the comments about Kurtis Guthrie not being of League Two standard. That was certainly not so at Plymouth where he had a great game. I remain convinced that he will fulfil his potential once he has scored a goal or two which should boost his confidence. In home games especially, I would like to see him and Padraig Amond in partnership up front. To see Craney used as a lone striker must bring delight to the opposition. |

I'm convinced that if we had a striker who was effective with his back to goal (i.e. holding up the ball and linking up with the attacking midfielders), we would have a team capable of pushing for the playoffs again. |

Re: Belated, half-arsed Swindon thread
Kurtis is quite young, (18 i think), and is obviously still developing phyisically. I wasn't at Plymouth but by all accounts he played well. I saw the long range shot that hit the post on TV which clearly indicates that he can strike a ball. I have seen him play a number of time this season and although he does get "muscled" off the ball by big centre halves he will develop in due course and certainly improve this area of his game. I think Coley and Jimmy will feed him lots of meat and get him doing loads of Gym work and he will be a different player in a year or so. At the moment he is being asked to play up front and he is getting quite poor service...we still don't have any wing players who can get round the full backs and pull the ball back from the goal line for him to pounce onto, run onto or turn goalward. Paul Mullin was such a great scorer of these kind of goals because he was so well supplied in his best years by the great wingers we had back then. Kurtis needs to be encouraged abd nurtured not criticesd and written off at such a young age. He also has the quality of being a real grafter and he runs and runs and harrasses the opposition far more then some in our current squad. Give the lad a chance...he just needs to score that first goal, build confidence, put on a stone or so in weight and then I think we will see him go on to be a really good player.
Question - When did we last see a Stanley player take on an opposing full back on the outside and pull the ball back for a collegue to run onto and belt it goalwards. I have mentioned it several times over the last couple of years but BRING BACK SOME WINGERS PLEASE!!! |

That's modern day football ,all about structured coaching ,shape, and most important three points . The manager decides the system ,probably based on players available, and his track record suggests he's not bad at it.

Re: Belated, half-arsed Swindon thread
Rev red,I didn't say I totally agree with it,indeed,Charlie Hughes revamp of our coaching ethos leaves a lot to be desired. His methods always hid behind stats rather than entertainment ,ie Spain won the world cup with great passing footy, but stats say 8 out of 10 goals scored involved 4 or less passes ,which coaches then take on board, not my bus of tea tho
