exactly. who are we?

in 1993 we celebrated our centenary year with a game against Blackburn Rovers (100 years since Accrington Stanley were formed)
last year we celebrated the 40th anniversary of our rebirth (1968, but the first game was 1970)
we call ourselves Founder Members (Accrington FC first played in 1878 and were still playing when Accrington Stanley were formed


so in the absence of any substantial reasoned debate on this forum for many a month, what do you class as Accrington Stanley?

the facts are that Accrington FC were formed in 1878 and ceased playing on 18th January 1896
Accrington Stanley were first formed in 1893 but played their first match in the 1894-95 season

so we aren't founder members then?

No Accrington Stanley weren't one of the original 12 BUT a team from Accrington were, and the old Accrington merged to take on the name Accrington Stanley.

The FL league invited John Alty and others to their Centenary celebrations as they recognise that Accrington Stanley are the decendants of that orginal team.

To me, as long as we fill in the gaps, and remember we re-formed and found our current home. Then we have worked up from the very bottom to once again reach the Football League.

no, cos I know that Accrington FC were founder members rather than Accrington Stanley :)

thats the point Mark, I was always under the impression that Accrington and Stanley Villa merged, therefore a continuation of the same club (or a defuncting and rebirthing by the same people a la 68) - BUT Accrington were still playing when Accrington Stanley had already been formed following the merger of Stanley Villa and several other Accrington teams

I was under the impression that we were founder members as I always believed that following Accrington FC's demise Stanley Villa took on the town name, becoming Accrington Stanley, hence continuing the old clubs traditions. This has put the cat the cat upon the pigeons though!!

Oh well at least we get to have more centenary seasons then any other club :)

Sorry rob but that seems nonsense to me, Stoke didn't become Stoke City until 1928, yet there still classed as founder members, to me this is just besmirching stanleys history needlessly.:(

Not sure if the same applies with us, but I remember John Alty going with the then team captain Martin Eatough to "special occasion" poss 100 years of the Football League round about 1988 ish. This was only attended by the Founder Members. So why spoil anything by digging up
what may or may not be correct.

there is evidence to prove that it is correct, there is no evidence to prove that it isn't correct :p

I was kind of hoping for some sort of discussion seeing as how nothing on this forum goes beyond a few posts anymore, but in the absence of that .....

If its good enough for the Football League then its good enough for me. We don't know who was involved with ASFC being set up and how they played an active role in AFC in order for the FL at the time and now to recognise the clubs as being one and the same.

The point comes about because I'm trying to archive the history of the club, within a timeline format. I had kind of always assumed that the next game following the demise of AFC would be the first game of ASFC, but there is an overlap that I don't know what to do with. :o

Rob , I was really trying to say, dig up all the facts but keep them to ourselves. we really dont want to spoil the illusion. The name and our history is our strength. With the present state of the club's finances we need all the help we can get.

I went the game against Rovers at ewood, it was in Rovers premiership winning season im sure 1995. They only opened the jack walker stand but was a good few thousand there I think. I class Stanley as founder members in the reincarnation of accy fc. Back to the game 2-0 win for Rovers if I remember right, and a good few big names played i can remember sutton.

Sutton and Gallagher scored and the only big name absentee was a certain Alan Shearer.

Not quite an absentee; he drew the raffle! But he was carrying an injury so didn't play. I heard that Gary Lineker was due to play for us but was called up by the BBC for an FA Cup Replay Match of the Day.

Sorry for the straying but they're known over in Holland, was over there today, bit chilly so wearing a Stanley woolly hat, while scoffing some "kibbelings" battered & fried Cod pieces at an outdoor Fish van in Oldenzaal Market. Fella sees the Badge & promptly says, "They're in Lancashire aren't they, 4th Division ?" we then proceed to natter about FL teams & how much better the footy is than over rated Premier Footy. Small World & he didn't even mention milk. ;) :D
