1962 - help please!

Howdy all
I'm hoping some of you will be able to help shed some light on something for me. Firstly, have a quick read of this:

ASFC News Story > 4438

Essentially this is my new project, and it's going to go a bit like this:
1) Try to find the eleven players from the game at Crewe (and speak to them, or find out what became of them if I can't find them or if they're no longer with us) or their relatives and speak to them
2) Try to find any other players that were involved in that season - as above.
3) Speak to supporters (that's you!) about your memories. I'd love to find someone who actually went to that game at Crewe, but it's also about personal recollections and how it felt.

All of this stuff will be brought together for March next year which will be the 50th anniversary.

Any information, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, is greatly appreciated.

Contact details are in the article on the fishy site.
Thanks for reading!
Dan

Just a young schoolkid at the time attending Peel Park. Used to nip over the wall at the town end to watch the players train and then used to get told off for leaving the school. No matter what, I missed the team when they resigned the place in the league and once I joined up (1969) I could not get to games (1970 onwards) until I left the army in 1986, when at least I could then watch the team rebuilding to the football league status they now have.

When I was celebrating passing my motor bike test in November 2007 one of the driving instructors was moaning that he had been a Crewe Supporter at that game, they had won 4-0 and it hadn't counted for anything because all the points were expunged following Stanley's demise soon after. Basically he still wanted his money back!

Just a thought Dan, is it worth starting a Facebook page 'Trace the 62 squad' or something like that, once it gets circulating I'm sure your press mates will pick up on it :)

I had the same problem last year Dave. I spoke to Gregor about it and he said he had scanned and scanned it and couldn't come up with anything. I asked one or two others to try it and they said it was fine so i just assumed it was my computer that was goosed!

Lawson Bennett was a gardener and handyman for one of our customers for years. He'd always tell me about the old Stanley days and him goin for his medical at Chelsea.

Sadly on Monday, October 11, 2010, he died suddenly at his home, aged 72.

I'm still keen to speak to any family etc. that he may have if you can help with that, or perhaps your customer can?

Here's a little update for you...

I have found my first genuine 62 veteran - had a brief meeting with Alex Smith this morning. He's really enthusiastic about what's happening and I'll be meeting him again soon to get his recollections.

There's an update here - ASFC News Story > 4442

The search has now been widened to all squad players in 61/62, so anyone who can help, please get in touch.

Re: 1962 - help please!

I have recently been told of a Workington player who scored six in two games against t'Stanley that season, but they were expunged as they didn't count. I will get details.

Bob Dobson 26-11-2011 11:58

Re: 1962 - help please!

The player was Johnnie Haasz. He certainly scored 4 at Peel Park when we lost 4-Nil but in fact we didn't get to Workington for the return, so the story has been added to since 62. He is thought to be still alive and I have set detectives onto tracking him down.

I know a couple of blokes who were involved in the close-down, and they believe their story has never been told, so I am getting in touch with them with a view to Dan contacting/interviewing them.

Bob Dobson 28-11-2011 19:00

Re: 1962 - help please!

I have traced Johnny Haasz and will email details to the club.
Was John Marshall on the books? I have a postal address for him but no other details. He worked for Post Ofice telephones. Does anyone have his contact details - PM me please. He attended Accrington Grammar School and was a great goalie. He also played cricket for Bash.

he may have been on the books possibly. but if he was he never made any appearances in either league or cup football.

There was an Alex Marshall in 1960-61 who scored 2 goals in his 8 appearances, a John Marshall in 57-58 who made 7 appearances, no goals, and a Tom Marshall who played 3 games in 25-26. No Marshalls ever played for us in non-league either

Re: 1962 - help please!

I remember John Marshall keeping goal for Stanley in the 1957/8 season. He was a good keeper but only stayed a while. Played quite a lot with the reserves also. A local lad.

ossy kid 30-11-2011 00:24

Re: 1962 - help please!

That would be the John Marshall, 7 appearances, no goals ,cause he was in the net.

Bob Dobson 01-12-2011 19:18

Re: 1962 - help please!

Ive just found John Marshall in the Complete Record Book. He left in 61 to go into National Service.

I have spoken to Johnny Haasz in Doncaster and told him to expect a call from Dan.

Re: 1962 - help please!

Hi all
Just another update for you. I think I now have a comprehensive (or at least as detailed as I can muster) list of all the players who featured in 61-62 and were also involved in the squad during that time. Here it comes:

Alex Smith (lives in Bolton - contacted)
George Forrester (deceased)
Joe Walton (deceased - lived in Preston)
Bob Wilson (I believe he lives in Dundee - I've got a couple of contact details)
Garbutt Richardson
Alex Hamilton (deceased - lived locally)
Willie Devine (I heard he may be in Dundee)
Mike Ferguson (is living in Spain I believe)
George Hudson
Bill Smith (deceased - lived in Blackburn)
David Sturrock (lives in Dundee - contacted)
Lawson Bennett (deceased - remained local)
Paddy Mulvey (deceased - his son works at Man Utd. Am hoping to speak to him)
Jim Milner (moved back to the north east)
Russ Cuddihey (still local - I've got three different addresses and two phone numbers!)
Peter Irving
Mike Pickup (got an address in Congleton)
Barry Smith (deceased)
Bob Gordon (lives in Scotland. In the process of getting details - cheers Mab!)
Joe Hooley
Reg Bonson
Jack Wareing (still local? I have an address)
Les Christie
Brian Bades
Alan Gregory (last heard of running the White Lion pub in Burnley)
Joe Devlin (still local - I've got an address)
Dave Baron (still local - contacted)
Peter Vipham (possibly lives in Rossendale)
Graham Lord (also possibly in Rossendale)

The last three didn't make any appearances, but were considered part of the squad then so will be considered that way now too. Macca, any names I'm missing?

Do any of these names ring a bell? (particularly those with no info next to them)

I'm particularly keen to find relatives of those who were local but are no longer with us (Bill Smith, Lawson Bennett, Alex Hamilton, Joe Walton)

I'm going to be sending out stuff to local press and also papers in specific areas where I think the players may be (David Sturrock rang me after his cousin read a piece in the paper in Dundee!)

Long post, but hopefully some of it is interesting.

Dan

I think that George Hudson lives in Bury, or surrounding area. He was introduced to the crowd at the Bury v Stanley game in Stanley's first season in the league.

There's a thread that's full of praise for George Hudson on Coventry City's forum at George Hudson. It includes a post from his daughter just two weeks ago so that may be a way of contacting him.

Re: 1962 - help please!

I've just spoken to my fifth genuine 1962 veteran - Bob Gordon. Yesterday I had a long chat with Bob Wilson, who has lots of memories of the time of the club folding.

There's been progress elsewhere too. I've got a large number of potential addresses for others and am trying to whittle them down.

I still have little or no info for Willie Devine, Garbutt Richardson and Peter Irving and haven't found any relatives for Alex Hamilton, Lawson Bennett or Bill Smith (something I'm really keen to do as they were local) and George Forrester.

The search continues!

THE usual comments were banded around when former Stanley striker George Hudson was announced as a guest at Tuesday’s clash with Northampton.
George met Rob and John Coleman after the game.

Hi Dan, just returned from spot of uk holiday and seen your request. Was only 18 and exiled down south by '62 so not much use with current info. However, I kept a cutting given to me from from the Sunday Times 16/04/06 (article by a Greg Struthers if you media boys have archive access). This a peice about Stanley's demise in '62 with team photo from that era and bit of a bio on each individual. Apart from what you already know, it says that Willie Devine and Peter Irving moved to Australia. In Feb 62 I saw Stanley play a friday nighter in Aldershot and as an 18yo kid was admitted to the dressing room to get the prog autographed. Remember hearing talk about the players having been given a fiver in the paypacket with no promise of when shortfall would be paid. At that point was asked to wait outside dressing room door for remaining sigs to be added to my prog. A few weeks later, brokenhearted like many of us and not a fan of Bob Lord if stories held water.
