Re: Nice and early Port Vale match thread.......
At the risk of receiving a further stream of abuse, perhaps those who think so badly of me would like to know a bit more about me and they may then realise that they are incorrect about so many things.
Since I started watching football in 1958, my job has taken me all over the country, but I am now retired. At every place I have lived at, I have supported small clubs, usually non-league, because they need support more than their larger brethren. I watched Stanley a few times in 2008 and 2009 before finally moving to the area, and in line with my policy of supporting small clubs, I started watching permanently in early 2010. You may care to note that I do not even live in Accrington. Those who say that I only watched the team because they were winning are quite wrong - when I first started watching the team they were near the bottom of the league. I, like many others, do not like the drums and I cannot see the need for them, but I like good neat football and so I was prepared to put up with the noise. I do not expect to see a team win all the time but a 4-0 reverse to a team who are near the bottom of the league is really not acceptable. I just cannot understand the policy or decisions made by those running the club. With respect to not going to Swindon to see the team lose really cannot be compared to the Cardiff fans going to Wembley, because watching your team play at Wembley in a cup final in front of 87,000 fans is certainly not the same as a wet afternoon at the County Ground watching Swindon play Accrington. It really is not the same thing at all. Many of the Cardiff contingent would have been there simply for the spectacle. I know because I have been to Wembley six times in similar circumstances. No doubt if Stanley ever reach Wembley the town will be emptied but many of those people will not have even been to a football match. With regard to the disgusting abuse I have received on here, written in the most appalling language, it has had no affect upon me at all, because I treat those sort of persons with the contempt they deserve. My wife who was born and bred in the Ribble Valley assures me that not all Lancastrian people behave like that. Most small clubs I have attended have been very friendly, but some of those who have written on here have demonstrated all to clearly to me that this certainly does not appear to be the case at Accrington. I sincerely hope that the club get back on track for you but I will not be there to see it. There are many other clubs in this area and I shall be watching most of these over the next few months. I was going to come to the Crown ground on Saturday but in view the animosity shown to me I have now bought a ticket to watch another game. I was also going to bring my son and his girlfriend to the Crown Ground so you have lost 3 supporters, not one, but apparently you do not need me anyway, so that is OK. I do not hold any grudge against anyone at the Crown, despite the abuse I have received. This really will be my last message. Please do not bother to reply to it as I will not be reading this forum again and you will be simply wasting your time and energy. Goodbye and good luck to you for the rest of the season., because I think you will need it! Malcolm |

In all seriousness, if your previous post is a true reflection of the way you 'enjoy' football, I feel sorry for you. The bug that bites so many at Accrington Stanley has obviously evaded you. You must understand that our love of the football club has nothing to do with results, so your scathing attack is utterly misplaced. I hope the bug does get you one day, as it's the best disease anyone could ever wish for. |

Its going to be a tough game on Saturday,I am just a bit worried shakers team will struggle against the Ariel threat at corners and set pieces.I am looking forward to seeing any rabbits that cooky can pull out the hat.

Admittedly they didn't have to deal with sun in their eyes, but Murphy and Liddle coped much better in the middle than the first half pairing against Swindon. I've never been convinced by Murphy in midfield or full back but he looked the part as CB in the second half. And the goalie seemed to settle behind them, and pulled off some good saves. Hope Lindfield has a better game - is there no sign of Hatfield or Burton coming though? |
Re: Nice and early Port Vale match thread.......
The only problem with that Exile is that IMO Liddle may get found wanting in the ariel battles.
Indeed,if you watch Swindons first goal,Benson got across him at the back post (cookys method of defending is being in front of your man, touch tight, and dont let them get across the front of you). Port Vale will start fast so defending high up the field will be key. That may take away the ariel threat, but this may expose our possible lack of pace. Looking forward to the game, and hopefully a few lads will rise to the challenge.---key man-the keeper |

Re: Nice and early Port Vale match thread.......
Hello to all Stanley fans,
I'm a Vale supporter and I've registered on here purely to post a big thank you and to acknowledge my respect for Accrington Stanley as a club. Your gesture in asking our current 'board' to stay away from Saturday's game has been massively well received by us Vale fans and is really appreciated. Our 'board' and a number of its former members are of questionable character and their actions have bought our club to its knees. I'm sure you can appreciate just how bad they must have been when you look at how your club can compete in League 2 and remain solvent when we can't - staggering when you consider our average gates, our ground and potential commercial income. The folk who run your club appear to be a sterling bunch who do a solid job of managing the resources available. If so, appreciate their efforts and do your best to avoid charlatans getting hold of your club like they have ours. All that said, we really could do with the three points available - we might need them to stay in the league!! All the best. |

A very depleted side gained a good point this afternoon in my view, Coid was well worth MoM, just hope hes fit fer tuesday, Too much experience in midfield is absent no doubt, Cannot understand why Smith not in squad? unless i'm missing summat? Could have won it but fer blind officials, was a blatant penalty not seen in second half. Still going in the right direction, Think when Cooky gets em together, Then we will have one hell of a side.

Re: Nice and early Port Vale match thread.......
well........im not too sure whether to be happy today with a point or sad that we didnt take all three. should have been a game that we won. Thought coid again MOM for me along with barnet. Goalkeeper had a nightmare, easily at fault for their goals. Bradford on tuesday but think the play offs must be out of our reach now. Clayton end excellant as usual.

also special note for the port vale fans. met with them on the way home and seem a great bunch. think were all in agreement that we hope they pull out of their financial mess!!!
|
Re: Nice and early Port Vale match thread.......
Game of contrasting halves.Thought we started a little short on confidence, played too deep, and let them control the game.In the second half we played further up the pitch and they seemed to fade and the game became more even.
Again, good use of subs and cook should take some credit for not letting the lads heads go down after the second goal. This is just what was needed,a gritty performance and agree our real quality came from Coidy |
Re: Nice and early Port Vale match thread.......
I may be going against the grain here but I though Coid was quite ordinary today and gave the ball away cheaply at times, m.o.m. for me was between Toto who started to look composed at the back and won most things in the air and Devitt who worked his socks off and you can see he has a good footballing brain but perhaps not always on the same wavelength as his team mates, should have perhaps buried his chance which was gilt edge but if that's a sign of the type of player Cooky looks to bring in that can bode well for the future.
I thought overall a draw was probably a fair result and gives us a base to now build on with the no goals scored and defeat monkies off our back. Good backing from the Claton End and I hope the 61/2 squad & families enjoyed their day:) |
Re: Nice and early Port Vale match thread.......
Must admit toto did well.Accis game plan was different today, they matched up and followed there men when defending.Toto did a good job on Pope and followed him everywhere, winning most of his challenges.
This allowed the new lad to play as a sweeper, although his passing was iffy, his defending was good |
Re: Nice and early Port Vale match thread.......
Exciting fare today, thought we showed a lot of appetite and fought back well after the usual 'individual errors'. Good to see the Cook era up and running. Felt a bit for Nicholls- he made a couple of excellent stops but the Vale goals were down to him. Injuries and illness clearly dictated Toto's appearance and I have to say despite previous criticism of the lad thought he was excellent today. But young Liddle really caught our eye, a fantastic work ethic and yes, one or two misplaced passes, but his presence certainly seemed to reassure Toto and bring the best out in him. Also nice to see Guthrie get on and look a bit stronger than previous appearances. A couple of other big ups- the Vale fans were teriffic and gave fantastic support, and we were pleasantly surprised to find Lewis still in the shop, working as a volunteer now- despite his role elsewhere. A top man indeed!

Re: Nice and early Port Vale match thread.......

Re: Nice and early Port Vale match thread.......
For Shakermaker only,
I have been reading your blog website and I thought the standard of the articles to be of a very high standard indeed, perhaps you should be newspaper reporter! I would have posted a message on your website but there is no facility to do so, so I have had to use this medium. With regard to the bug, as you put it, I have indeed experienced this. My hometown team, which happens to be a current League 2 club, was founded in the 1890's and I have supported them through thick and thin, mainly thin, since 1958. Some would also consider them to be a small club. During that time they have spent most of their time hopping between the bottom two tiers of the football league with the occasional high spot. So I know only too well about dedication and supporting your team. For the advice of Cashman, I did not cry to my wife, as you put it, in fact I showed her the postings because we both fell about laughing as we found them very funny - and I wanted her to see what a lot of twerps populate the Crown Creche. As for running away, it is purely a matter of wanting to see a decent game of football at a local club without having my ears battered, simple as that. |
Re: Nice and early Port Vale match thread.......
Plenty of positives from yesterday, although after a dire first half when we couldn't keep hold of the ball I had to apologise to Harwood Red for my immoderate language. Toto had the best game that I have seen him play, which hopefully will give him confidence, though I think he was harshly treated by the ref. Liddle also impressed in a steady back four, and we found some cohesion and spirit in attack in the second half. I like Devitt a lot as he attacks aggressively and produces some great crosses, but should have broken the net with that chance early in the second half. Valarian and I were questioning the line-up before the start, wondering why Smith and Hatfield were on the bench. Hatfield looked sharp to me on his first spell at the club and after such a superb finish for his goal, surely he has to start the next game? Negatives? What is it with Stanley and goalkeepers, and there are 2 in the starting line up who for me, are not good enough. One who gives his all, but to little effect, and the other who seems to get picked solely for his physical presence alone. Surely we can find better.

Cashman,
Down south they view northern men has being strong in the arm and thick in the head but as the menfolk in my wife's family are intelligent, I know that this is not strictly true. You, however, seem to fit exactly into that description. I do not know why, but many northern men seem to have a chip on their shoulder as big as a housebrick. You only have to watch the local news on TV to hear people constantly belly aching about the south always getting better treatment etc. I expect you are also of that view. |

Anyway, I merely wished to address shakermaker only, as someone who supports Accrington who also some intelligence, and my other comment was just an aside as I did not want to become involved in another spat. I saw an excellent game yesterday with a lot of singing, a fantastic atmosphere and not a drum in sight. I don't think the Accrington townfolk are apathetic at all, probably find the drumming offputting. I have decided what the letters ULTRAS stand for but it is too rude to put it on here!

Re: Nice and early Port Vale match thread.......
I am from the south
|
Re: Nice and early Port Vale match thread.......
I am from the south but I have links to the north. The father of my first wife, a lovely lady who I lost with cancer in 2007 after 37 years of marriage, was born and bred in Clayton le Moors. It is pure coincidence that my current wife is from this area. I spent sometime living in Harrogate in the seventies where my children were born. I lost my daughter in 1989 but my son moved north last year and now lives in Bolton. As a result of my experiences, abuse or banter, does not really bother me at all, water off a ducks back.
Over the years I have, in addition to supporting my hometown team, supported Harrogate, Brighton, Kidderminster, Stourport, WBA, Chatham, Bath City, Salisbury and Andover. I also watch Clitheroe on occasions. My brother says I have had more clubs than Tiger Woods! And before anyone asks, I do not go south to watch my hometown team anymore because it costs £80 in petrol alone, and as a pensioner I simply cannot afford it. |
Re: Nice and early Port Vale match thread.......
You might have mentioned it before Malcolm so i apologise if you have and i've overlooked it, but when you say that you support a League 2 team down south..who is it? :)

I am glad you enjoyed your football wherever you went yesterday The atmosphere at Stanley is one that is unique and quite simply that of the proverbial twelfth man it may not be everyone's cup of tea but having visited like yourself a lot of other clubs it is something a lot of other clubs a lot larger than Stanley I am sure would be proud of.:) |

Re: Nice and early Port Vale match thread.......
No , I have not mentioned it before because I thought I would receive a load of ridicule but my hometown team is Gillingham.
They nearly went out of business and out of the league in 1995, and were within an hour of doing so. I was supporting them when Accrington folded in 1962. So I know what it was like for the Accrington fans. I was also supporting Salisbury when they nearly folded about 2005 and it was the fans that saved them. I have always admired any supporters who resurrect their clubs such as Accy and Wimbledon. I do hope that your club do progress, because clearly a lot of people have put a lot of hard work into getting them back into the league, it is no mean feat and they deserve success. When Accy played the Gills I had a problem deciding where to stand! It was with reluctance that I decided not to come to the Crown but I sincerely assure you that I just cannot live with the drumming. If others like it, that is fine, but not for me,thanks. |

I'm sure it is less of an issue to those sitting in the stands towards the dugout... and besides what you think I was attracted by the friendliness off the fans and club for me to start supporting accy approx 10+ years ago and both have been with me through illness past couple of years and it has helped me recovery wise to know I have people who really do care at Stanley!! Ps I grew up in Harrogate in the 70/80's.. As for yesterdays game, I'm not one for going through what happened in details, so will just say 1st half - pants 2nd half - seemed to want it lot more and were lucky to come away with a point. Oh my thank god for boring Sundays least got to catch up on the stanley forum by heck this thread gave me the giggles from page 3 onwards, i do like a owd mole to rumble in the stanley jungle. I have read every post no moderation is needed :D
Never in my life have i heard the drum being an issue (feel its not banged enough :) ) if the bangs are too much then dont stand in the line of fire, takes a little common sense really, go into family main stand no drums there! All fuss over nothing lol As for match it was all about 'a goal' win/lose just to get out of the stanley goal drought ..... Bonus we got 2 & gained a point 1st one on cookys board hopefully that will now improve the confidence within the team - knew podge would score hes been main one with fire in his belly since cook took over. Normally would be complaining about toto but he surprised me yesterday - i think hes beginning to get it now - we hope. |

If this is the case then the answer is,as it has proved with such individuals in the past, to merely ignore his baiting until he disappears into the mists of time, If not, then my advice to him is to drop the self-righteous posturing, learn from what he sees in other posts in this and other threads, that the Forum is not a place to be critical of, or attempt to belittle others, but a corner of Accrington Web where like minded fans of the Reds share ideas and banter in a civilized and friendly manner. Re: Nice and early Port Vale match thread.......
Yes, I do have something of value to add to the forum. It may be stating the obvious but all the problems with the form of the team seems to have started when Long went back to Burnley.
On a general note, it is a sad fact of life but until Stanley get bigger gates they will always just about survive, and I cannot see how they can progress further. If they got promoted I am not sure they would be able to stay up. 1,800 is simply not enough - a couple of years ago Salisbury were getting more than that in the southern league. Last season the club lost their best six players, and this season it was Long, Proctor and the manager. That cannot all be down to not getting paid on time. More likely down to frustration and an ambition by those individuals to progress. The problem with football as a whole is that players at all levels are paid far too much, it is not rocket science. The other problem that Accrington have is too much use of loan players, and I thought that was a real problem last season. Apparently Mr Cook feels the same, which is something anyway. I do not see how you can achieve consistancy and good teamwork with players coming and going all the time. Now the above posting does not include one word of nastiness to anyone on here - but no doubt someone will come out with a load of abuse, I have come to expect it now. I did not contact shakermaker via the forum message thing because to be honest I simply do not know how to!!! If you have time, as Stanley supporters you should read his blog, it is very interesting, well written and an example of how English should be expressed. |

Small club, small minds, a club in the league that is basically a non league club.
Before I stopped supporting Accrington, whenever I told friends and family I supported Stanley they fell about laughing. As my brother said, Accrington is the ground where they all sit together to keep warm. And as the seats at the back of the family stand get soaked through every time it rains he is not far wrong. I have never come across a ground where the players get changed in a portacabin before. If I was intentionally winding anyone up, you would know I was, believe me. I do not think I have come across a club with such a large group of unfriendly and hypocritical people before. The clubs calls itself friendly, well I do not agree. To call me condescending, and then for you to allow me to come on this website as I if it were some kind of privilege is the height of cheek and in itself the depth of condescending. The people of Accrington have indeed done well to get the club back into the league, but it took four decades to do it, Wimbledon did it in less than ten. The Accrington supporters do however constantly keep going on and on about how clever they are to have done this, and it gets very wearing after a while. The end result is that they have a severe case of tunnel vision, egoism and they clearly cannot under any circumstances accept criticism of their beloved Accrington Stanley. I have never intentionally wound anybody up, and if that is what you think you are all quite wrong. For those that criticised my spelling, and I previously wrote the write incorrectly because I was annoyed at the latest load of abuse, you really need to look at your own. The correct word to use for high crosses is AERIAL not ARIEL - the latter is a soap liquid, but the way the club up keep slipping up perhaps you were right after all. I have tried to picture Trashman and his mates and I should think they look like those three old gits in the last of the summer wine. If you are going to have people drumming for goodness sake make sure they know how to, because a constant bang bang bang for the entire 90 mins is not a decent beat to hear, and I could make a better sound on a biscuit tin. I am in future going to support a proper football club. You can dream on in your own little world. You are just a load of small minded persons who support a small club that is going nowehere with the current manager. |
