Not much wrong with smudgie's team at all. I think we'll see something along the lines of:

Nicholls
Coid Kiernan Nsiala McIntyre
Devitt Joyce Murphy Grant
Amond Lindfield

Could even go back to 4-3-3 with Devitt and Grant supporting Podge up top. We've got some good options in those areas.

SamF 17-03-2012 09:54

Re: Northampton Town Match Thread............

For me it would be:

Nicholls
Coid Kiernan Nsiala McIntyre
Joyce Murphy Barnett
Grant Podge Devitt

Northampton by the sound of it are a physical team so we don't want to be whipping in the crosses too much - we've got class in Grant and Devitt, have them both cutting inside and running at the defenders, getting shots off with their stronger feet.

Re: Northampton Town Match Thread............

WELL DONE LADS !!!! Hopefully the first win of many under Cooky and Leam.

Thought a draw was probably a fair result, but who cares, a great 3 points.
Thought the ref had a shocker, missed a blatant handball and penalty.

Podge had 1 of his best games in a Red Shirt for me, literally never stopped up front. Played the perfect lone striker role.

With Devitt & Grant on either flank we at last look dangerous going forward. MAIN positive for me. :)

Toto did well up against THE mountain of Akinfenwa. New lad also looked pretty composed along with Nicholls, who looks to be getting better with every game.

Their right winger was probably the best player on the pitch, Kev Mc had a nightmare against him, especially in the first 45. But I couldent care less to be honest :)

Roll on Tuesday Night !! :D

Thought the winger Silva i think, if he had a better final ball, would be way above Div2.

My thoughts too. Plenty of Clayton enders screaming for him to be subbed. BUT....... he then does what Murphy does best and delivers the perfect measured cross for Craig to bullet it into the net. Devitt my man of the match for his goal and non stop attacking performance. Nsiala and his mate came through a very tough test with honours too. Bobby showed signs that he can deliver again when he gets bedded in.

Re: Northampton Town Match Thread............

Decent game credit to Stanley particularly second half in taking the game to the Cobblers and defending from the front something we have not seen a lot of for a while. Akenfenwa was his usual handful & Silva caused Macca problems first half but super strike from Devitt and Padraig was relentless in trying to pull defenders around just wish we would at times stop lumping it to him and play it into feet and give him something to work with.

Three points always welcome, four games unbeaten the corner is slowly being turned now let's build on it against the Shrimps.

Beginning to see the style of play Cookie wants to play and it is beginning to click.:)

Special thanks to whoever posted the 50/50 results on the Clayton End exit:)

Re: Northampton Town Match Thread............

Best game I have seen at Stanley all season - even during the reign of JC and JB. Jamie Devitt and Podge - in fact the whole team seemed to gel including the new defence. Bobby had a quiet game for me but no doubt will get used to our new style of play in the future games.
Referee today and the assistant on the Whinney hill side had shockers. Very poor missing (or worse ignoring) blatant fouls. I am gobsmacked we managed to win. I am looking forward to seeing the replay of Podge's 'offside' goal.

Re: Northampton Town Match Thread............

Excellent game today. Great to see Lindfield notch such an important and brave goal off the bench, and Podge run his socks off as per, but Devitt today was absolutely brilliant. It's not just his skill levels,or his decisiveness-at times his body has trouble keeping up with his brain- its his effort. The man is all over the field, crucial blocks at the back, tracking back to win balls back etc etc. I thought he was sensational today - not bad for an individual whom my wife described when he first emerged as a sub in the Plymouth debacle as 'looking like a young Ken Dodd'.
Not ashamed to say I stood and clapped him off-he's an absolute credit. His dishevelled chic betrays a real talent.

Re: Northampton Town Match Thread............

I agree with all of your incisive comments. The lads worked so hard today.Still passes going astray and the attacking players not quite in tune yet. Jamie Devitts tricks, flicks and back heels sometimes confusing Podge and Bobby as well as the opposition. One last thing, very entertaining game today part due to Northampton who came to play football. A style of play that we can all tell our friends and colleagues is worth coming to see. FANTASTIC!!!!!!!

Interesting to see Jamie Redknapp at the game today.

Re: Northampton Town Match Thread............

I thought I saw jamie redknapp at the match today. Just in and very pleased with the result although we rode our luck. Amond is my favourite player just now followed closely by devitt. Thought nicholls was poor at their goal and nearly cost us a second with hesitating. Toto keeps getting better and the new kid settled in well. Thought their goalkeeper was MOM

Also special mention to Paul cook on his first win of many. Team seems to be playing the way he wants them too. Cookys barmy army

Redraine 18-03-2012 06:59

Re: Northampton Town Match Thread............

Impressed with Cooky's interview. He's not getting carried away and highlighted our age old weakness when under pressure in defence in hoofing clear without keeping possession. I can excuse our current patched up defence, but he won't!

Pendle Red 18-03-2012 07:43

Re: Northampton Town Match Thread............

Valid point Redraine

Cookie comes across well in the interviews and is starting to mould the squad, it must be a frustration with the injuries we have keeping out first team regulars but sometimes restrictions in the squad numbers eligible can form a closer unit which I think we have looked more of over the last few games with perhaps now the shape of the side looking better around the pitch.

It is still a work in progress but there is still very much to play for whilst giving Cookie the chance to perhaps experiment with formations and players.

Brilliant game all round , what a team! on my walk home heard two men behind say they never been to Stanley before but had been given two tickets via work. Their usual football venues are Ewood Park and Turf Moor. But they say it going to be Stanley more often after what they had just witnessed.Say no more

Two of the best goals I've seen in a long time and a splendid all-round performance against good opposition.

The Independent didn't think much of our chances before the match:

Re: Northampton Town Match Thread............

Toto was man of the match for me. Akinfenwa was using all of his presence to try and bring other players into the game, and all of his experience in order to induce fouls from our defenders. Toto dealt with this calmly and read his player well. A great performance.

Podge worked extremely hard up front. I did think that he would benefit if Murphy pushed further forward through the middle rather than drifting out wide; almost offering a second striker role when attacking (think Yaya Toure of City here). Our shape was pretty good all the way through. Devitt and Grant caused a lot of problems for the Cobblers when attacking, but our full backs suffered due to a lack of tracking back by the midfield when we were without the ball; exemplified in the way McIntyre was turned inside out by Silva. Devitt needs to improve on this, but otherwise he was almost unplayable; creating space and chances all the way through the game.

I thought Northampton's equalising goal was a foul on Kiernan and still think so having seen the replay. Then again, as has been mentioned, the officials had a shocker. The referee missed a stonewall penalty for us at 1-1 and the liners showed a flaky understanding of the offside rule.

Northampton are a good side but I thought overall we deserved the win. We looked fit all the way to the final whistle and our winning goal was superb.

Well done Cooky and Leam. Bring on the Shrimps.

Good man.. No need to apologise, even if you really did mean it the way it came across.

Re: Northampton Town Match Thread............

Agree with Shaker's comments, especially about the midfield and "tracking back". This is the main area where we still seem to be missing Procky's battling midfield play. Luke and Charlie are playing "just ok" at the moment but even at their best, neither of them have the aggresive style of chasing back and tackling and harrassing like Procky used to.
Don't forget that Northampton have been one of the divisions form teams recently having won a few matches to take them away from the bottom. They did come prepared to play an attacking game and were definitely looking for three points. So I think for us to win and get the three points was highly creditable even though, as others have commented, we are still not clicking fully yet. Keep the faith, the team is getting stronger and more cohesive. Good to see Toto getting more consistency into his game and I was really chuffed for Linfield to score that cracking header, especially right in front of us in the Clayton End. Murphy had a dodgy game but his cross for Linfields goal was just puurrrrfect!
On Stanley On.
