Re: Nice and early Carlisle United Match Thread......

Well an enjoyable day, despite the scoreline. Helped by some pretty mega weather in Cumbria.

Thought it was a sort of 50/50 positive/ negative split in terms of performance. We have to remember its more or less a fully new team...... AGAIN. Plus we where playing against a top League One side.

Positives for me.......... Liddle, Superb for 90 minutes. Molyneux has a big fight on his hands to get that shirt. Chippendale improved massively after a poor first 45. His understanding with Liddle seemed to get better and better, he also could have scored a couple with two great efforts. Bavs made a couple of good saves, so fair play to him.

Negatives....... Lindfield, had a very poor game, looks far better when further up the pitch in his natural attacking position. Joyce also seemed a passenger for 90 minutes. Barnett again shoved out on the Right Wing, not his natural position and no surprise when he was taken off.

As cooky has said we are signing 2/3 more players this week, which surely will be our biggest ever squad?? No excuses needed then :) Really hope Winnard is back soon, as for me his experience with the nutter that is Toto is essential. Toto himself no doubt has the talent but if he doesnt control his temper he simply cannot be an automatic pick at the back, as Cooky had to waste a sub by bringing Eckersley on before he was going to be sent off.

Of course in hindsight we are all Mourinho's............... but I would like to see Lindfield further up the pitch where he is FAR more effective and a specialised Right Back brought in. I take it Hatch is still suffering from Food poisoning???

Southend away is the REAL start. :)

Thought only positives today were liddle and Chippendale.

Clark barnett and Shepard absolutely awfull.(never seen Clark get in the box all pre- season)

1st two subs no impact at all, was podge or gray on the bench? Gray looked our most dangerous player pre-season

Right hand side looks lacking, left hand side decent

Good post that smudge, agree about liddle, must have been under pressure, and to reply with a mom performance is a sign of a good player.Linfield will get up and down the field for you all day,but has little experience of defending.
Good player tho ,and I too like him further forward.
Let's not forget, also most of our players have little or no experience of league football, and of the shape were trying to play,so in many games this season, the wheels may come off !!!

Wouldn't have been a good idea to have an un-registered player on the bench :)

This is a big worry for me. I just cannot see any shape at all. Too often yesterday, three players were within a few yards of each other in midfield. Is this supposed to be the Barcelona shape? It works for them but I cannot see it working for us. I wouldn't criticise Barnett orSheppard. Charlie is wasted on the wing. On several occasions, Sheppard was telling defenders/midfielders where to put the ball for his run but the through ball he wanted just never came. Afterthought - why didn't Toto and Murphy swap forwards being marked when Toto was clearly being wound up?

The real positive for me was the understanding between Michael Liddle and Aidan Chippendale. We have a natural left back and a natural left winger. The situation on the right is very different where our right back is not a natural and we have no right winger.

Despite the problems which were apparent yesterday, I think it was a good performance against a much better team. I would say we were outclassed but not outplayed.

Nail on the head. Charlie in a more central role is a natural for releasing Sheppard with measured through balls on which I'm sure he would thrive, and obviously craves.

Charlie can be as good as he wants, the penny will drop one day!!.
Regarding shape,I think Coley learned a lot from playing 4-2-3-1,you dont conceed many, but dont score many.
Our fortunes changed when we went 4-3-3 and made the play-offs.
There is no set formation that will guarntee you success, and is really based on what type of players you have.
Cooky will know his players by now,and will set them up accordingly

Carlisle always gave us a tough game at their ground and even won at Hillsborough the season before last.

Such a narrow defeat at such a good team's ground and bossing the play for a good chunk of the second half is encouraging rather than anything else.

Sorry, but I just don't get that. Are you saying that some players don't want to be as good as they possibly can be?

If that is correct, something went wrong on Saturday. I know I've said this before, but talk of formations leaves me cold. I have no idea what formation Carlisle played - for all I know, it could have been 1-8-1. What I do know is that each individual Carlisle player knew where his colleagues were - and, possibly more importantly, where they would be in the following few seconds. That could not be said about Stanley.

As a team, we did not threaten Carlisle. On the positive side, as a team, we worked extremely hard and for much of the game contained a superior opposition.

Whilst i wasn't at Carlisle, i don't get that? according to reports stanley had a decent second half spell, where they had a few goal attempts, That aint a threat?:confused:

RR,what I am saying is that Charlie has the ability and technique to play at a far higher level, but seems to go into auto pilot, and just cruises thro games. He should be making more of his ability and dominating games.
I accept he is played out of position, but it frustrates me as I know how good he is.
He is fit, fast, good football brain ,so he just needs more application IMHO .
Regarding shape or formations, that comes with experience, and players carrying out the gaffers instructions.
Believe it or not it's hard to change,if you have been brought up playing a certain way,and asked to change.
Some prem players find it hard !!!

Read what I wrote : "As a team, we didn't threaten Carlisle".

And now read the match report again. We had two meaningful attempts on goal. One was an individual effort from Chippendale; the other was a Chippendale free kick.

Yes, we had a decent second half spell. No, we didn't have "a few" goal attempts. We had two - and neither was a team effort.
