With regards to our lack of penetration, in my opinion we have looked at our best of this season when playing two forwards up top. Even without Beattie, Podge and Will would pose defenders plenty of problems together.

Any news on Beattie's injury?

I agree 100% Shaker we look much better wi 2 up front.

Calf muscle, will be out a week or two I should think.

Podge hasn't played well for a long time and his goal record is about 1 in the last 12. Got to be worth trying a different combination up front and I agree we've always looked more penetrating with 2 up front

I'm amazed that Beattie was even considered for today's game when there is an important game on Wednesday.

We dominated much of the game, especially playing against the wind in the first half. But that crucial final pass just never happened. I cannot agree with the criticism of Luke Joyce - he is at the centre of all play. Apart from an almost freak goal by Rachubka, Joyce was the only player to force a save from the Burton keeper.

The lack of strike power is a real worry. Murphy played as an extra striker in the last few minutes today. Is it time to try him there for at least an hour?

R.Red..'If you don't score you don't win !'...this obvious maxim from the late Sir Bobby Robson rings true tonight. We can talk tactics and posession until the cows come home, but unless Leam can unveil a method which will produce enough goals to beat or equal opposing teams OR someone who knows where the net is, then the end-product could well be disastrous...sorry if I appear to be slipping into my 'writing on the wall' mode again ..but like you I feel a worry coming on !!.:(

Good call! Perhaps he can be the new Fred Pickering, who converted by Blackburn from full back to emergency striker in the 60's and ended up scoring 168 career goals and was capped by England. Happy memories - he was dynamite!

That would be a great bonus, if it were to occur,Personally can't see any harm in giving young Carver a run out? he may be inexperienced, but seems to know were the onion bag is.

Happy memories indeed. Didn't Blackburn sell him to Everton for a substantial sum?

Everton paid 85 grand, then sold him to Birmingham for 50 grand. From there he went to Blackpool for 45 grand, than back to briefly to Blackburn, and on to Brighton. he was a forklift truck driver after retiring from football.

Here's a rather poignant view of the great Fred in later years....it comes to us all !!,

Everton 60's legend Fred Pickering ...... - YouTube

And there's a great 'bonus' interview with Cloughie at the end !!

Not wishing to interrupt this nostalgia-fest about Rovers, but a quick look at some statistics makes for interesting, if concerning reading regarding scoring goals.

According to a Football League web site, in all competitions this season, Stanley's top four strikers are Boco, Amond, Joyce and Molyneaux, with Boco having 20 shots on target and 18 off. In total these four have had 55 shots on and 41 off target.
In comparison (and purely as that), Oxford Utd, one place below Stanley in the League, have four strikers who have made 87 shots on and 76 off target.

if you don't shoot you won't score and there are no prizes for not bothering the keeper - obvious to us watching but on-field fear of failure contributes to low stats ( and goals ).

To clarify; as a favour to our friends at Marine, young Carver is unavailable. Played and scored for Marine against Macc; sadly to no avail, therefore cuptied
