Time for the debates to stop and get behind our team!
COME ON STANLEY! :) |
Re: Cheltenham Towm Match Thread
Think if can control Benson, there is something in the game for us ,come on Stanley !!
|
Re: Cheltenham Towm Match Thread
Must stop the supply to Benson and we must have our midfielders running beyond the strikers to cause them problems.
I was told Cheltenham struggle to defend against teams with lots of movement. |

But Wombles winning at Daggers... :(

Re: Cheltenham Towm Match Thread
It didnt look like a penalty from where I was. The number 27 looked good when he came on for Stanley. The linesman on the cowshed side was poor and got at least two offside decisions wrong and the Ultras where brill. Playing with the same spirit as today I am optomistic we can survive. I thought Liddle had a decent game.

Re: Cheltenham Towm Match Thread
Stanleys luck has got to change at some stage we were all over that shower today and would have had the points if it were,nt for inept officials and that cheating captain of theirs, the passion in the ground today was fantastic and if the the lad,s control the next 13 games like they did today we will be ok, 110% commitment is all we can ask win, lose or draw WELL DONE LEAM AND THE BOYS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
Re: Cheltenham Towm Match Thread
Its says a lot when the radio presenter for Cheltenham says " I can't say he dived , but I can't say he didn't dive to get that penalty , Accrington fans are furious as we would be if it been the other way round "
We played well, I enjoyed the match but when there is cheating it does leave a bitter taste. Roll on Tues. |
Re: Cheltenham Towm Match Thread
Well Beattie answered his critics, including me! A good performance all round for the lads today, and with a bit more quality with the final ball we should have had 2 0r 3 more goals, at least. I thought Joyce had one of his better games today, battling like a Trojan in midfield, but I think if we had started with Linganzi in place of Murphy we would have won the game. He seems to have that extra quality on the ball which we are missing in midfield and with virtually his first touch he calmly dribbled the ball out of defence to set up a great, quick counter attack and never looked back from there. I feel Leam is gradually getting it right with all his new additions improving the squad, and I will go to Spotland with renewed hope in my heart for the upcoming fixtures. Nice to be introduced by Valarian to Football19 before the start. Deano was a warrior today, too!
|
Re: Cheltenham Towm Match Thread
passion and belief. I can ask no more. Today the Reds attacked and defended nearly every ball. They played with some kind of belief in themselves that they could win the game. HAd it not been for some considerable ineptitude from the blackies then they might well have done.
Chuffed for t'Reds at getting a point against high flyers that thought we there for the taking. Chuffed that the Clayton End kinda rose to the challenge. Chuffed for the team that they showed some fight and resilience. A point a game and we won't be too far away. |
Re: Cheltenham Towm Match Thread
but I still thought Beattie was rubbish. two goals is a performance from a striker but in reality his general play was crap

Re: Cheltenham Towm Match Thread
Thought it was a much improved performance today, and was nice to put a face to Val and Redraine. We really should have won having 19 shots(9 on target) and Gray and Murph will only know how they didn't score.
The penalty was a joke, the lad knocked it too far and went looking for Hughes leg, clever, but still cheating. The second came from Hughes conceding a needless free kick, but for me the keeper was at fault not coming, indeed,I am on the fence about him as I've yet to see him dominating or making saves and his kicking is average at best. The stats say they had two shots on target, and against a quality team,it shows how well they played. Talking to Val about combinations, thought Wilson and lids did well and the CBs,who were up against two good lads. There were plenty of positives, and chances created, just a little concerned with 4-4-2 as in the second half, they made subs, packed the midfield to stop getting overun(took there wide men off) an got back in the game, but Bocco stayed out wide and pushed on,very positive, but a tad suicidal!!! Made for a exciting game. I did tell Val Beattie would step it up today and I predicted 2-2,should have gone the bookies |
Re: Cheltenham Towm Match Thread
I agree with Macca, Beattie reminds me of John Miles but at least Beatie put away the two chances that came his way, I thought both Gray & Murphy had two excellent oppotunities which they failed to convert and which would have put the game to bed, not impressed with Cheltenham a that uses thier Physical strengh to win games
|
Re: Cheltenham Towm Match Thread
no alternative to Beattie? Gray was thrice the player Beattie was today. By virtue of his runnign and effort and chasing every ball I'd play Gray every game. If Amond can step up to that then I'd play him as well.
In a relegation battle we need eleven men every week |
Re: Cheltenham Towm Match Thread
Improvement in performance, but not in the result.
1 win in 17 is a shocking stat, but hopefully if we play like that vs Rochdale we should pick up 3 points and move closer to the 50 mark. The one thing Beattie does do is to draw the attention of the opposition team. They put alot of focus on him no matter how bad he is playing because of his name and reputation, whch in theory should free up space for the other players to influence the game. |
Re: Cheltenham Towm Match Thread
The performance today was good but the reality is that we failed to convert all the chances we had into a win. That's the main reason we are in the relegation zone in the first place. The one thing that irked me today was the substitutions we made, we were playing well with 2 up top and we needed to win so we were chasing another goal. I just understand why we took a striker off and replace him with a midfielder when the 2 up top system was working well. Why not replace James with Amond and go for a third goal which would've lifted us out of the relegation zone. One point to show for a good performance is the reason we are going down, yes we have defended badly at times but conversion of chances into goals is what is costing us dearly.
Today was a missed opportunity. |
Re: Cheltenham Towm Match Thread
bdc your spot on,I was calling for Podge to be given the last twenty minutes as Grey was tiring and was getting caught offside too often(he put a shift in tho).Think the first sub was tactical to match them flooding the central areas.
The new lad looks a player as well |
Re: Cheltenham Towm Match Thread
Well my two pence worth, first in a while.
Thought it was the best performance by stanley for a long while. The players looked like they where up for it from the first minute. Hughes at the back looks a real find, just a shame we havent got Atkinson alongside him. Liddle had his best game of the season at LB, but still cannot believe he is keeping Molyneux out of the side. Joyce wasnt a passenger for the first time since October by my reckoning. New lad showed some great touches and for me is a sure fire starter for Tuesday night. Boco yet again tried his 100% best, my god the lad has some unbelievable energy. Was my MOM. Gray had his best game in red shirt, though should have done better with chance, he was very good indeed. Surprised people are criticizing Beattie. He scored two?!?!?! Doesnt matter if he doesnt do anything else, he is a striker for gods sake, its his job to score goals!!! He can do that every week for me. To sum up, play like that every week and we wont have a problem, simple. I just hope they maintain that level on Tuesday and especially next Saturday which is MASSIVE !!!!! |
Re: Cheltenham Towm Match Thread
Smudgie agree ref Beattie. Don't know why he's getting so much stick for today...HE SCORED 2 GOALS! if he continues that we have more than a fighting chance and he seemed genuinely delighted when that first one went in and I do believe he has real desire to keep Stanley in the football league. Cut the fella some slack!
|
Re: Cheltenham Towm Match Thread
Was at Hillsborough today but my thoughts were never far away from Stanley.
I believe with every fibre of my being that we can stay in League 2 and we must. The players must take encouragement from and build on this performance. They can win at Rochdale and I believe they will. I don't think it will be as bad as 2006/7 when it went down to the penultimate game of the season. PS Stanley's old friend Tango man was on good form despite freezing temperatures. |
Re: Cheltenham Towm Match Thread
Taken a point each from two of the top sides - that's got to be good. Matches against lower placed sides coming up which will hopefully bag us a good points haul. Well impressed with that Linganzi feller - he's going to play a major part in our survival - I can feel it in me water. ;)
|
Re: Cheltenham Towm Match Thread
If not for players missing chances made and the referee allowing blatant cheating, we would have won today.
If you think the manager is at fault, give your head a feel. You'll see that you are an idiot. We're playing too well to go down. Come on Accy. |
Re: Cheltenham Towm Match Thread
Conversion of chances into goals is the main thing we have to do if we are to stay up, I have full confidence in our defence but we need to score more goals from the chances that we create. If we do that we will stay up, if we don't we will be relegated.

Re: Cheltenham Towm Match Thread
For my two penneth....
That was the sort of performance we have to replicate another 13 times between now and the end of the season. It had energy, drive, belief and I'm sure that the Cheltenham boss must be thanking the footballing gods that they went back South with a point.:o Beattie to me had a good game. He has his detractors on here, however he knows where the net is and showed it emphatically twice today. Their keeper also made three or four damn good saves and on another day we could have won that game comfortably. The show rolls on to Rochdale now. Play like that on Tuesday and we'll come back with three points. New guy (Linghazi ???) looks good, though I'd stop short of throwing him in the starting line up on Tuesday. I'd struggle to find fault with any of the effort on display today from the starting 11. As a former manager ( who I'm quite positive is having some background input to our current plight and Leam's thinking ) used to say.... Keep the faith. Another 13 displays of that calibre and the wins will arrive along with the required points for safety. Negative thinking will only get negative results. Get behind the team and cheer the lads onwards to safety. There's worse sides in this league and come the final table at the end of the season, I'm quite positive at least two of them will be below Stanley. |
Re: Cheltenham Towm Match Thread
I came up from Cirencester today and I must say you played well - far better than your position in the league suggests. You also played well at our place earlier in the season. We played poorly again today and were lucky to get a point.
Just wanted to say that I think Stanley are a great, friendly club and I'm amazed how you survive on the gates that you get. I really hope you stay up; with passionate fans like yours, you certainly deserve to. Good luck! ( and please stop taking so many points off us!!) |
Re: Cheltenham Towm Match Thread
Forgot to mention the referee, who was appalling, I can see why he got sacked from the Premier League list.
Two of his decision's led to their goals, simple. The penalty really was beyond a joke. That Taylor really is a scumbag of a player, anyone else remember his right hook against Symes when he was at Rochdale a few years ago??? Disgusting player. |

I say well done to the team and look forward to Tuesday night (when I can go and will go), cheer the whole team and management on an who knows what might happen. Yesterday, however, apart from the ref and CTFC players, we were also let down by Dagenham, Fleetwood and Morecambe for not doing there bit. If AFC Wimbledon can win away, so can we. Here's to cheering the team on on Tuesday.:theband: |
Re: Cheltenham Towm Match Thread
There seems to be a determination in the team and Linganzi seems to fit the bill .Leam has assembled a tough looking team, with Hughes, hunt,Wilson and no team playing Acci will be given a easy ride.
Think Paul Mullin would had a field day with these lads behind him. Feeling very optimistic and looking forward to " the great escape" KTF |
Re: Cheltenham Towm Match Thread
Mention of Paul Mullin makes me wonder if he'd have got the stick that Beattie has on this thread if he'd hung around the penalty spot all afternoon and then bagged two.Think not. Beattie has never been the most mobile player even in his younger days, let alone at 35. However he did show the young 'three times' better striker how to take a goal
|
Re: Cheltenham Towm Match Thread
Well said Reamer.
|
Re: Cheltenham Towm Match Thread
It was ironic when talking to Valarian during the match, that Grey was on his heels when crosses were coming in and I was urging him to take a change and get across his man.Up popped Beattie, got across his man and scores!,no substitute for class!!!.
His second was fantastic technique as well. He is a class player, but is finding it tough to get upto speed, but class always tells in the end, remember my prediction,he scores to keep us up !! |

Re: Cheltenham Towm Match Thread
Been very busy since the match on Saturday but just read all the positive comments on this post.... and that is what we need now! I agree that it was a much improved performance from the team. They played their hearts out and they were all pretty knackered at the end of the match, which is as they should be of course! With that extra bit of luck, that we are just not getting, we could have won by a couple of goals.
I watched the video observations by Leam and Beatts and the positivity was clearly reflected there too. Well done James Beatty, you answered some of the recent negativity exactly in the right way by scoring a couple of goals...the second goal, in front of us in the Clayton End, was absolutely hammered into the roof of the net!!!! More please!!! I thought the fans were brilliant too on Saturday and I am sure that the players and Leam could feel that we were being a great twelfth man. I think that the more continuous singing also helped to maintain the players efforts right up to the final whistle. D'Urso was very poor throughout the match, although for their penalty there was definite contact as I heard a clear boot to boot contact. However, it was still a harsh penalty as their lad was never going to keep the ball in play anyway! What was great was how our boys lifted themseleves and kept the momentum going and got back in the match! Well done guys! As others have said the new lad Lingazi looks very promising in midfield. He has good physique allied with skill and he is not afraid to take a player on. Keep the Faith everybody and remain positive. Get 100% behind the team and mangement and we will achieve safety. I've said it before...staying in the football league for a club as small as ours is a simply phenominal achievement and is like winning a trophy!!!:theband: KEEP THE FAITH...ON STANLEY ON Roll on Tuesday ... 3 points for us at the Dale against the "Ex Reds".:alright: |

I've said on the Beattie thread that perhaps I was a bit hasty to criticise him so I'll put that one to bed, no point being negative where there's not really a need for it. But on the odd occasions when Mullers did have a bad game it was usually forgotten because he worked damned hard every single game and had earned the right to a bad game. |
Re: Cheltenham Towm Match Thread
[QUOTE=maccawozzagod;1043757]Paul Mullin never did hang around the penalty spot though did he ?
No, course he didn't, Macca ...but let's be realistic, he wasn't performing at 35 like he was at 22. Similarly James Gray will not be charging around like he did on saturday at 35 |
