Torquay thread
Here goes, as requested.
I would like to see Leam start with the subs and those subbed last night, Gray, Wilson, Linganzi and Gareth Bale all on from the start. Thoughts? |
Re: Torquay thread
your first pre-match thread against Rochdale was a resouding success, here is hoping for
for a long run of success for both you and the reds, ps. when did you forget about your cold after the first second or third goal best regards Bob |
Re: Torquay thread
12 games left, 36 points available, would take us to 72.
Last season Crewe sneaked into the last play-off place on 72. Crewe were the in form side and romped the play-offs and were promoted to League 1. Well we can dream a little but, THIS IS STANLEY we all know absolutely anything can happen between now and the last day of the season. KEEP THE FAITH, WEAR THE SHIRT, EAT THE PIE! ON STANLEY ON :D |
Re: Torquay thread
Start with the same XI that finished last night for me :)
|
Re: Torquay thread
Start with the subs.
It essential we dont get beat on Saturday, to maintain the momentum and add to the points total. A win is our target but a draw would keep us heading to the 50 point mark. |

Bob and I were shivering throughout the first half and moved to the hotter air in front of the Ultras in the second. Still damn cold but after the second goal we both remarked how hot we were now feeling! The cold never bothered us after that. |

It would be 4-3-3 for me,murph/linganzi/joyce in the middle,beattie/bocco/wilson or moly up front.
I would also contemplate giving Dawber a go in goals, just look at the impact Aldred had. For a young un he is a big lad and highly rated and sure he wont let anyone down |
Re: Torquay thread
The momentum is with us now after two sterling performances and Leam and the boys must be looking forward to our next match against Torquay on Saturday. They are only one point above us and we can leapfrog them and start to move up the table!
Well done Leam, Lee and the team after Tuesday night. More of the same please. KEEP THE FAITH......COME ON YOU REDS!!!:theband: |
Re: Torquay thread
In theory, Stanley could be as high as 18th on Saturday evening.
Here is the fixture list for Saturday (thanks to the BBC for the list) AccringtonvTorquay 15:00 AldershotvGillingham 15:00 Bristol RoversvBurton Albion 15:00 CheltenhamvWimbledon 15:00 Dag & RedvChesterfield 15:00 ExetervNorthampton 15:00 MorecambevRochdale 15:00 Oxford UtdvPort Vale 15:00 PlymouthvBarnet 15:00 SouthendvRotherham 15:00 WycombevFleetwood 15:00 YorkvBradford 15:00 If Gillingham win, Barnet and Plymouth draw and Burton beat Bristol Rovers, and most importantly, we win, play offs here we come (probably not, but at least a little safer). Most importantly, the team must keep up the momentum from Tuesday night's excellent result. I personally do not care who starts, providing the result is favourable to Stanley |
Re: Torquay thread
Agree with Davo,a win would be great but a draw would be ok.
They will be set up to counter attack us,so its important we dont conceed early and give them something to hold onto. They are going to be direct and play off Howe(whos a big lad!!),so the defenders will have a different challenge to the one on tuesday. If we score first,i fancy us to get three points |

They are going to be direct and play off Howe(whos a big lad!!),
Agree with that, 19. It was Howe who destroyed Stanley down at Plainmoor and, in my mind, Stanley's performance (or lack of it) that day was the start of their recent troubles. Whether they stop Howe directly or stop him getting the ball in the first place, he can be a real danger man. But, as much as Torquay away was the start of Stanley's troubles, I'm really hoping that Rochdale away is the start of a different run of fortune for the club. |

Your right there Joe,Benyon is looking for the second balls, which Howe creates.
Remember Dean having Howes measure a couple of years ago,and he eventually cracked and was sent off for a two footed tackle on him which could have broke his leg. Hope Deans memory isnt as good as mine:) |
Re: Torquay thread
Best wishes to us for this important(aren't they all)match! The first thing we have to win is the toss of the coin to decide which way we kick the second half. If it's not the Clayton End then i'll be worried!:frown:

The Gulls might be on form as far as 'gak'-king ( A neologism for the Forum ??) is concerned....BUT their League form is definitely open to question....so right in their faces Reds !, clip their wings, and zoom up that League Table !! ... |

Re: Torquay thread
73% to them. Pretty perky after a long coach ride.
We need to pin our hopes on a quick break away. |
Re: Torquay thread
Considering our position, that was a very disappointing display,
|
Re: Torquay thread
Whilst we have such a dire lack of real attacking quality in our two starting central midfielders we are always going to struggle. At last maybe Leam has started to acknowledge it by subbing one of them today, late though it was. Amine has shown he is 4 times the footballer than either of them can ever hope to be. Get him started in the games coming up.

Re: Torquay thread
My two pence worth......
Positive's and Negative's for me today, so ill start with the Positive's. Three games unbeaten is a big step forward considering how bad we had been playing up till the Cheltenham game last Saturday. Defensively we look alot better, Aldred in particular has done very well slotting into the side in Hughes absence. Hunt looks solid at Right Back, and has experience in abundance which I have no doubt is helping the rest of lads at the back. Linganzi looks the real deal to me, and yet again was impressive coming off the bench. He simply MUST start at Northampton next week. Boco again ran his socks off, but he didnt look fully fit to me??? Hatfield...... In 8 minutes, scored a goal which should have been given. Why on EARTH he is not given more game time I do not know???? Negatives....Unfortunately in our position a home draw is simply not enough. We need to be picking up 3, make no mistake the three home games in a week WILL make or break our season. Joyce really was appalling........ AGAIN. How on earth he is starting every game I really dont know, thank god at least Leam finally saw sense and took him off. Hopefully Hatfield comes in next week, he simply MUST be dropped, its as simple as that. Murphy was ineffectual in Midfield....... for the 500th time he is a defender!!! BUT its 3 games without defeat and its something to build on. Luckily its 15 minutes for me to get to Northampton next week so ill be there to shout the lads on, that's for sure. |
Re: Torquay thread
The 2 yer on about were absolutely Dire today, The guy yer on about starting has demonstrated he can pass the ball with accuracy, so even if he aint fully match fit,to me worth starting n taking off if he gets a bit knackered.
|
Re: Torquay thread
we started off very badly, very tentative against a team on a poor run. But from 20 mins or so we really bossed the game and if only there was a player capable of putting himself in the 18 yard box with some decisiveness we would have scored. would have, could have, should have. That may as well be our front line.
Second half was a bit more even but it goes down as points dropped I'm afraid. A big plus is that we are not giving away dimb goals (for now) although I have to say I thought Hunt was very weak, always on the wrong foot and missing tackles. So good in parts and bad in parts but the unbeaten run goes on. Everyone is looking at the 3 home games in a week to decide the season but every point is vital and that starts next week at Northampton |
Re: Torquay thread
I thought we looked a lot better without Beattie. When he was on the pitch it was a matter of hoof the ball upfield in his general direction, after his departure they actually seemed to be looking for a man to pass to. Get shut of Winnard and Murphy and we might have a chance.
|
Re: Torquay thread
Stanley didn't play that well. But why that goal was ruled offside, I don't know. He looked onside from where I was stood.

Re: Torquay thread
To be fair they set up 4-2-3-1,and the 3 pressed us in possession, whilst the holding two screened and picked off our efforts to get the ball to our forwards feet.We played this system for over a season and drew numerous games and obviously Knill is a fan of it.
Like Tuesday,we were over run in central areas for twenty minutes until we tucked our wide men in. Yerself seems to blame Murph and Dean for our current plight, interesting if he could enlighten us to his reasons. My moan today is our front twos movement(or lack of it),if the ball player looks up,the strikers movement dictates the pass. They challenged for the same ball on numerous occasions,Beattie just doesn't want to run beyond the challenge, simple as. My other moan is the keeper, kicking poor, struggles to catch and won't come, all the back four were onto him on a number of occasions. Positives, another clean sheet,Aldred and Deans performance against two/three good forwards. Nicky Hunt solid and reliable and Bocco was excellent despite carrying a pull. If we had a player like Howe,I would play Bocco off him all day long. For those having a pop at Murph,I would love to see them play 5v2 in a 30m square, not easy, and a clean sheet suggests he did what was asked of him |
Re: Torquay thread
A point is a point, at this stage of the season things are bound to be tight especially when playing fellow strugglers. However I would have found it difficult to name a man of the match.

Things are not going for Leam & the team, On the pitch what looked like a foul in the box given as a free-kick on the outside of the box, then what looked to me like a perfectly good goal being ruled offside. Off the pitch, an abysmal attendance of 1197 coming after the super result away to Dale, as for Stanley’s performance not brilliant but workmanlike, I thought we contained their danger man Howe very well, more of a threat was their No. 15 Bodin who I thought had an excellent game, |
Re: Torquay thread
MoM should have gone to Aldred - him and Deano had their strikers sewn up for most of the game
|
Re: Torquay thread
After today, I seriously think Leam should be looking at putting the captain's armband on somebody who actually deserves to wear it.
Joyce was an absolute waste of a selection today.....and he is the "leader" on the pitch??? He wandered around midfield looking like a little boy lost, ducked out of nearly every 50/50 ball, never put in any sort of telling tackle and his distribution was absolute garbage. In the predicament we're in at the moment we need a captain who is an inspiration to those around him. Who will actually motivate those around him. Who will put in a shift and use the sort of effort required to win the battle. At the moment, Joyce doesn't tick any of those boxes.:( |
Re: Torquay thread
just seen a still of will's 'offside' goal on twitter....never in a million years! That's what we have had for so long and I hope it doesn't mean too much come the end of the season
|
Re: Torquay thread
Very similar performance to Rochdale 1st half today, 2nd half a slight improvement.
Agree with earlier post that Aldred should have been MOM, and the whole back 4 did well. We still struggle to create in midfield especially in the middle we play too many sideways and backwards passes instead of playing into Beattie and Grays feet, which leaves our front two fighting for scraps again. How many times today did we hump it up to Beattie who can't jump anymore and gray who to be fair puts himself about even though he's not the biggest. They both need better service Linganzi has got to start, from the few appearances I've seen I've looks a class above any of our centre midfield players - I'd play him and Joyce. Still positive we've got enough to avoid relegation if we dont get any key injuries |
Re: Torquay thread
Didnt go today, my mate did.
Said first half was dull, Torquay probably just shaded it and shoud have gone in ahead. 2nd half stanley improved and should have had a penalty. His main concern was the managers persistance with the midfield which simply is not working. Improvement needed but a welcome point. Roll on Northampton. Hopefully Exeter can do us a favour on Wednesday. |
Re: Torquay thread
Should have had a penalty, also had a goal wrongly disallowed imho. yer mates correct about midfield which was dire until the sub came on.
|
Re: Torquay thread
With the system they played we were out numbered at one point 5 to 2,that's why I have never been a fan of 4-4-2,it's nearly impossible to influence the game in there.Remember when we played with two holding players, the cbs split, the fullbacks pushed on and the keeper rolled the ball out to Joyce .
There forwards were also dropping deep to get on the ball and link play, did our forwards drop to help out?,answer NO !. The goal was also two yards on side, the Lino made a really bad call, and I would like to see the pen claim again. No ones mentioned the pitch either, tricky surface to play on,and both sides were struggling,it was a bobbly surface |
Re: Torquay thread
Just watched the Football League Show that I recorded last night. :fire::fire::fire:
THE WILL HATFIELD GOAL WAS CLEARLY ONSIDE AND SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN DISALLOWED!!!. :thumbsdow:thumbsdow:thumbsdow I was stood with my usual group in the Clayton End and even from centrally behind the goal we could not believe that he had been given offside! Having watched it on TV it is easy to see that as Hatfield comes into view the ball has left Rommy's foot by several yards and Hatfield is level with his marker just outside the penaltry box but the central defender, number 15, is a yard and a half inside the box, thus clearly Hatfield was ONSIDE. Add to this the clear penalty which we were denied earlier and we can consider that we were WELL AND TRULY ROBBED BY REFEREEING INCOMPETENCE!!:dummy2::dummy2::dummy2::dummy2:COLO R] Having said that we didn't play all that well and we really failed to put together any decent passages of fluid football. Torquay were pretty innefective for all their possesion and their shots at goal were awful. I agree that Lingazi must start as he has much more physical presence and skill in midfield that we have lacked all season. Boco and Aldred were our best two players IMHO. [B]REFEREES AND ASSISTANTS..."YOU WERE WRONG ...WE WERE ROBBED!!!":dummy2::dummy2::dummy2::dummy2::COLOR] IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN 2 - 0 TO US AND THREE POINTS!!! It is difficult to accept somebody saying that the referees can make errors just like anybody can when our lifeblood as a Football League club is being sucked out of us by sheer incompetence like this!!:dummy2::dummy2::dummy2::dummy2::dummy2:COLO R=red][B]COME ON STANLEY...KEEP THE FAITH...IF WE HAVE TO BEAT A "TEAM OF 13" THEN WE WILL!!!: |

Re: Torquay thread
Sorry guys, but unless you have "smart" TV's which show things outside the camera picture, the replay is inconclusive. At the moment Rommy hits the ball Will is not in the picture and only appears when the camera pans to follow the shot. Be honest, how many of us were watching Will when Rommy shot? Only those who were in line with the play can say whether he was offside or not. Where were you standing, Bernard Dawson?

Re: Torquay thread
We cant complain about us not getting a penalty - they had one denied where Murph slid through a bloke well after the ball was played but the Ref missed it because he had followed the ball

Re: Torquay thread
Two areas of consolation for LEAM !...
1. The consecutive clean sheets !!.....and 2. That six points only cover the bottom TEN Teams in League 2... Do'nt these indicators also give us all some reason to take a more optimistic view of the current squad's ability to remain a part of The Football League....???. |

Leam needs to be given a little bit of credit,he could have easily ran with Bohan and Eckersley, but took a chance with Aldred and Linganzi as direct replacements.Anyone think it was a mistake?,I think it's a good decision, although I hope they come back with a bit of form under there belts.
I think Hatfield is just a victim of our system, good player, but were does he fit in?,for me his best position is just behind the front man and making late runs (Sean macc role!) |

Re: Torquay thread
Personally I think Peter played very well yesterday. His positioning was good and he won the majority of his personal battles. He's employed as a ball-winner in midfield and I think he is doing well at it. He walks a line with his attitude on the pitch and he narrowly avoided red for a lunge yesterday afternoon, but you can't fault his commitment. He'll only get better at his midfield role as well which is promising.
Murphy's midfield partner Joyce did indeed have a stinker, and although I can empathise with the relief felt when he was substituted, some of the jeers around the ground were uncalled for. He's one of ours after all. He'll know he had a bad day at the office. I'd have Linganzi to start in his place next time out. Overall I thought we played fairly well and though the resulting draw was unfair due to a painfully incorrect decision from the liner, we didn't deserve to come out rampant winners either. We contained Howe effectively (Tom and Dean must take a great deal of credit for this) and rarely did their runners get behind our back four. The lack of confidence in the shaky Rachubka weirdly works well for us as the defenders think twice about their line. Paul has got to improve on his kicking and commanding though - for a player of his experience he has simply not been good enough. Bavs is back on the golf course and pushing to get back in before the season is out. I have to agree that our movement needs work. This is epitomised in the lack of options available when we get a throw in the oppo half - we are a joy to defend against in these situations because the forwards don't move well enough. Once Linny is back I'd like to see Boco and Gray up front with Craig out wide. Gray is lively and has been a revelation in his short run of starting appearances, but can't rely on Beattie's scraps as these are too few and far between. Lots of positives to take from the game (none moreso than the second successive clean sheet) but certainly more work to do to ensure we are safe from relegation. |
Re: Torquay thread
100% agree with you Shaker, although I thought Rommy was worth a mention, just hope the pull he had hasn't got worse as he put a right shift in.

Re: Torquay thread
Joyce has had bad day's at the office for 6 months. No player on this planet deserves to be picked every game regardless of who he is.

Re: Torquay thread
Trying to put our week into perspective. Unlucky to only draw with Cheltenham and a good performance. Team showed good character to come back after falling behind when it would have been easy to cave in, given the circumstances.
A great result at Rochdale, however we weren't brilliant and 3-0 flattered us. Thought we lacked creativity and any real threat yesterday and didn't deserve anything more from the game. So, on balance, 5 points from 9 is probably what the performances over the 3 games merit. However, a single point at home against a fellow struggler is not good enough. As many other posters have commented, Aldred has looked solid in the 2 games and may well be the assurance at the back we need. Despite saying in a previous post that I didn't think Linganzi was the answer from the couple of times I'd seen him for Blackburn reserves, he's shown enough in the 3 games he's come on, that he can be a positive force at this level and deserves a start. If we take anything from Sat, it will be a bonus with the 3 home games following Sat being make or break. We must take at least 7 points, and 6 of those must come against Barnet and Wimbledon - we simply cannot afford to draw or lose these games as, with these 2 wins the table will look a different prospect for the last few games. We can't afford to drop points at home to the teams around us. The players have to take each game as it comes, but the management team should be looking 4 or 5 games ahead in their planning. Really need as many as possible to get to the ground and get behind the team for these 3 games. The gate on Sat was woeful. |
