No point, the defence is crap anyway. They might as well use the youth team keeper :)

Pitch was ok before lunch....took a couple of my workers down and helped them sheet....was impressed by the condition overall, but a couple of the corners are very soggy just off the pitch and they have run a new touch line 6 inches or so inside the old line....here's hoping for a good game!!!

too interested in the match, Kiwi, to bother looking out to see if the English channel has breached the beach head at the end of the road ! Heavy rain and 80mph gusts forecast for tonight - more fence panels wrecked I guess come morning - but never mind, 2 - 0 at halftime ! Thanks for asking.

Re: Scunthorpe Thread.

Thought twas a game of 2 halves, 2 sides played well in abysmal conditions, First half we had the wind played great, cannot remember a scunny shot on goal? second half they had wind behind em they played very well fer a spell then Stanley fought back, had quite a few efforts, They scored winner in injury time, overall we did not deserve the loss, but thats life, Noway any neutral could tell who was top of div2, Credit to the display given, gutted about the loss, Roll on Bury.

SamF 14-02-2014 21:17

Re: Scunthorpe Thread.

We came out the second half to sit back waste time, defend and try and hold onto the wind.

The wrong idea straight off but to try that whilst playing 4-4-2 was bloody suicide. If you are trying to hold then pack the midfield - especially when their CBs had the beating of Kayode and Bowerman all night!

Tactical naivety shown today - hope the management team learn from it.

cashman 14-02-2014 21:21

Re: Scunthorpe Thread.

Disagree Sam, they were obviously gonna come out all guns blazing wi the wind behind em, Aint top fer nowt.

choirboy 14-02-2014 21:30

Re: Scunthorpe Thread.

Gutted at losing three points but I am more GUTTED by the way we GAVE the game to Scunthorpe TONIGHT! Yes we played quite well in the first half. The wind was helping us as it blew hard and brought showers from the changing room corner diagonally down the pitch to the Clayton/ Whinney Hill corner from where they tried to pass it out, with confidence in there ability to play on the ball. In the second half we got it totally wrong tactically. Joyce and Murphy conceded midfield and defended as if they were in a back line of six with Joyce and Murphy often positioned either side of Aldred. Our centre midfiled MUST PRESS HIGHER UP THE PITCH even when playing against the wind! I thought it was a mistake to take Koyode off even though he wasn't having a good match because he had the height needed to defend corners and free kicks. It would have been better to bring on Liddle, Hatfield and Atkinson to fill the midfield gap that we allowed. Yes I accept that the conditions were worse for us to defend in the second half as the wind really got up and it lashed it down with rain...horrendous conditions in which to play and defend. There is an old saying that you all have heard......"The best form of defence is attack!" Which in football terms must mean play up in their half of the pitch!!

Cashman I have to say I agree with Sam.
As I just said in my previous post, we gave midfield away in the second half. It would have been better to have packed the midfield with Liddle, Hatfield and Atkinson. I would have left Koyode on to defend free kicks and corners with his height and taken Moly, Murphy and Joyce off early on in the second half...as soon as they got one back was the clear signal for that!
Scunthorpe are clearly a good side though so we should give them credit and they are clearly up near the top of our division on merit. It's only a couple of years ago that they were in the Nationwide division, two levels higher than us!
Gee....FRUSTRATED though!

Exactly!

So how do you go about countering that?

For me you have two options:

* Push onto the front foot and go for a third
* Pack the midfield to plug the gaps and defend like your life depends on it.

We tried to hold onto the game playing 4-4-2 - they always had a spare man to pass to as we had a man short in midfield.

The ONLY way that play could work is if you had pace in behind with the 2 men you leave up front - then the opposition can't over commit for fear of being caught but with Kayode and Bowerman they were safe as houses!

cashman 14-02-2014 21:53

Re: Scunthorpe Thread.

Bowerman was a correct substitution i have no doubt, the lad was absolutely knackered. He had a decent game i thought but was well goosed.

I can remember our longest serving manager saying the best defence is in the opponents half.

WELL DONE TO BUZZA !
An amazing job to get the game on!:mosher:

SamF 14-02-2014 22:09

Re: Scunthorpe Thread.

I must say also our defending from set pieces was incredibly negative - several times we didn't have a single player outside of the penalty area.

Leave a man up at the half way line - he takes 2 defenders with him and gives our keeper more room to come and claim the ball - plus it gives any clearance a chance of sticking rather than going straight to the opposition.

Time to move on me thinks....all players gutted after game....the results for the next two games are FAR more important.....Bury at home and Torquay away.....

And how many times did we throw away a 2 goal lead from the first half to lose the match 3-2 when he was manager? A few I'll wager. I can remember the taunts from opposition fans of 2-0 up and you mucked it up on a number of occasions.
Although I agree with what he is saying, he would have done well to remember that when he was manager!!

lancsdave 15-02-2014 07:49

Re: Scunthorpe Thread.

I think it was game of two halves.. of the elements. Scunthorpe got the better of them in the second half, otherwise not that much to choose between them. Never going to be a classic in those conditions but well done to Buzzer and his volunteers for getting it on, and the referee for allowing it to continue. From where I was sat the Whinney Hill side looked very iffy and probably worse than it was against Morecambe.

The attendance was up against the weather, the weather won.

Re: Scunthorpe Thread.

Stuck here at home I put on Radio Lancs just to hear the half time summary to hear the ominous news that Scunny were hugely adding to their attacking power by introducing 2 forward subs and that "They were really going all out for it". I was amazed that we didn't appear to react to that straight away and only put on like for like subs late in the game rather than bolstering the midfield/defence immediately, as others have mentioned. I appreciate that JB's half time talk probably wouldn't have anticipated such a bold move from Scunny's manager, but the addition of McSheffrey alone should surely have brought a more effective response? Today's results suggest that the damage hasn't turned out to be as bad as it might have been but we can't afford to be out thought tactically in our next two games!
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, I know, but..........
