Peel Park old team pics

Just been given permission to share these pics on here, by my good friend from the ASfc exhibition Dave Cocker, (son of the late Les Cocker). Thought it would be fab to put in here on trip down memory lane, and besides I'm a nipper so relying on fellow supporter past peel Parker's.

There's two pictures from the 1950's of ASfc team at Peel Park before travelling to an away match. Can you name the players in the photos?

Who are they Macca?

From memory, which is now starting to play tricks, we think we have the back row in the group worked out.
One, but maybe three in the front row.
Two out of three in the first photo

What's most amazing is that the sun is shining in the 'team' photo!
Should be able to pinpoint the exact day from that.

Here is as far as we can get from memory:-

George Stewart, Jimmy Harrower, Bob McNichol, Armour Ashe(behind McNichol), Willie McInnis, Charlie Sneddon
Front row
Only 2,Jim Mulkerrin(second left,) Les Cocker (far right)

Small photo:-

Small photo is, Les Cocker, Harold Bodle and Armour Ash.
The large photo left to right are- George Stewart, ? ,Jimmie Harrower,Jimmie Mulkerin, Bob McNichol,Armour Ash, ? ,Willie McInnes,Eddie Hunter,Charlie Sneddon, Les Cocker.
The two question marks could be, first, wearing the hat, Norrie McReady and the second in the middle of the photo either Willie Miller or Jimmie Anders. Year 1955/6 or 56/7

I think we could agree with you on Eddie Hunter next to Jimmy Anders but not sure on McCredie with the hat on

Just got home from me Hols....
Yes the chap front left with the hat is very likely to be Norrie McCredie.
I lived on the estate at Within Grove as a boy when the Scottish influx of players signed on by Walter Galbraith were all found houses there. I went to school with Norrie McCredie junior and knocked about with most of the players kids...happy days...

Just looked again and it stikes me how similar James Beatty's hair style is to the players of the fifties !

I remember working with Jimmy Harrower in the 70's I think at McKiernans Heating Group. Jimmy use to get his hair cut in works time. One day he had gone to get his hair cut and the boss turned up on site and Jimmy wasn't there. When Jimmy came back the boss asked him why he went to the barbers in works time and Jimmy's classic reply was "It grows in works time"

Great pictures, if you're sure the three doing the digging are players I would guess at, top with the wheelbarrow-Armour Ash, the haircut gives him away, at the rear-George Stewart, but haven't a clue who the other one is. Not a regular first team player, if I was to guess I would say John Marshall the reserve team goalie.

Good point, I suppose it strengthened then up a bit of muscle? Maybe it could be employed to the current game tactics hehe

Re: Peel Park old team pics

Team group: I think that the player with the hat is Harry Anders, and that the player part hidden by McNichol is Willie Kelly. The group should be 57-58, but there is probably one player missing. Les Cocker was retired by this time, and on the coaching staff.

ossy kid 17-03-2014 16:38

Re: Peel Park old team pics

Sorry Greger, that is def. Armour Ash behind Bob McNichol and the gent on the end in the dark blazer is def. Les Cocker. The hat man could be in dispute though.

Re: Peel Park old team pics

OK. If you say it's Ashe, then it is. But I am equally sure about Harry Anders, which would make this an early 57-58 season pic, as Ashe left the club in November. And, yes, of course it's Les Cocker in the blazer, but my point was just that he wasn't in the pic as a player. (Don't think players had club blazers). And he was never on the same team as Mulkerrin and Sneddon e.g. Someone is missing, and that someone was almost certainly Wattie Dick.

A friend of ours, who was very close to the Anders brothers, says that Greger is indeed correct, when he says the player in the cap is Harry Anders, ( the player on the other side of Jim Mulkerrin is Jimmy Anders). He says he is also correct when he says that Les Cocker never played in the same team as Jim and Charlie (he had retired before Jim Mulkerrin joined Stanley). He also thinks the missing player was more likely to be Wattie Dick, who was a regular around that time, unless he was out through injury.
