Then I will continue on foot for the remaining one mile ascent to St James Park. Whilst taking refreshments at several of Exeter's finest watering holes............ ;)

Partial QUOTE from my comments on the Stanley v Exeter thread home match which we lost 2 - 3 a few weeks ago;

In conclusion, I think a draw would have been a good result tonight and probably a fair result too. I think that Exeter have been the best exponents of the 'control...pass...move...control' game that I have seen this season and I expect them to be in the top three or four by the end of the season.

I must admit that going in to todays match I wasn't too hopeful of getting anything out of the game and thinking that a draw would be a really good result.
To get a win AGAINST A TOP TEAM with what sounds like a really excellent performance is a real filip for the Team, for Coley and Jimmy and for all the supporters.
So Well done one and all.

Well actually Dav NO those 11 lionhearts today won "In Spite" of our Manager, I actually was praising him for doing summat right, cos we had subs warming up after 1 Hour, and some of our lads looked shot-at (quite a few have been ill this week) But Stanley equalised and the subs were sat back down, Honestly Billy Smart wouldn't employ this clown, I'm certain everyone yon could see some knackered players today, Mcarten was very good, still needs to learn to retain the ball not give away, but still very good, Moly was off the boil again, apart from a 10 min spell were he put a couple of good crosses in, but gave the ball away far too much in dangerous positions, Aldered was off the boil also, (one of those who was ill) but still found the guts and stamina to get up yon and score the winner at the death, How those knackered lads survived the Exeter onslaught,is a testament to their desire imho NOT Your football genius Dav.

smobile 03-01-2015 20:56

Re: Exeter City Match Thread.........

To a man, we were excellent today. From the first whistle we wanted it more and they scored against the run of play. Always fancied us even at 1-0 down. Lads who came with me were gushing about the effort and belief we had. Moly doesn't seem to be at the races yet though, but they all had fight.

As soon as 2nd half started, I knew if we could get one then we'd get two. Exeter lads in pub after game reckon we bossed it and that we'll be in with a shout of play-offs come May.

Only concern is No.1 spot, he looks nervous and short of confidence and that's never good in a keeper.

I watched us against Wycombe and they didn't stand out against us, there is nobody we can't beat in this league. Anyone can beat anyone and have a good feeling about the months to come.

Final note - It was great to see my "new mate" Cashman again - Carlisle, Yeovil, Exeter and home v Wycombe. Smashing bloke who loves Stanley like we all do. Also had the pleasure of meeting Stanley Nick - We are a unique bunch.

A very selected commentary......what happened to the 5 /6 stone wall chances Stanley had before you scored from your first shot on target. As Cashy says look at the stats.....The difference between the two teams was Exeter came off the field a little tired whereas The Stanley Boys left it all on the field....and believe me there were lads on that pitch that shouldn't of been playing through illness....a real fighting performance...As for you Mr Brookes good luck but if your course at Uni is anything to do with Reporting drop it,but if it's anything to do with fairy tales a degree with honours is a cert.

Made it back in just over 4 hours. I must say the Exeter fans we met were a very friendly bunch and were a pleasure to talk to in the pub prior and walk to the ground.

Simpson looked very shaky today....his inability to decide whether to come out or stay at home gave them two gilt edged chances today.

The game changed second half when we got tight and much more physical on their number 33 Harley . Everything they created was going through him in the first half.

Thought the sub was made too late....but then again what do I know. I guess we didn't want to disrupt the rhythym whilst we were on top. I'll happily get it wrong every game. :)

All in all a typical JC Accy performance...dangerous going forward but palpatations every time the oppo cross the half way line. Although it has to be said our defending in and around the area was much better today and the defensive units decision making was spot on.

Still think Liddle occasionally wanders a little too much. Would have taken a point and it looked to be panning out that way. Delighted :D

Also....what is Coley feeding Shay McCarten? A completely new player!!

Sorry but I disagree about Liddle. For me, it was a 3-way split for MotM with Lidds, Rob Atkinson and Tom Aldred all putting in great performances. In addition to scoring the winner, Tom made a goal line clearance that was worth a couple of points. Proccy must have covered every blade of grass on the field. Luke Joyce also. I agree that they all worked hard but, like Cashy, I feel we got those 3 points despite the manager, not because of him.

Going back to Michael Liddle, in some ways he was forced to wander. Moly's indifferent form makes more work for the full back, and furthermore, Nicky Hunt had his hands full with his winger which resulted in Tom and Rob being drawn across and Lidds moving more centrally to cover them.

Of course, we had to have a little cameo from Crooks. I thought Maguire was disappointing once again. That he plays 90 minutes to the exclusion of Gray, Carver and Windass defies belief.

And a special word of mention for the referee. Crap. And the same word for the assistant referee in front of us Stanley fans.

BBC possession stats never make sense. I'd stand by smash and grab.

As for it being selective commentary - I completely agree with you. There were two good chances I left out for Accrington. As you will appreciate, we are Exeter University Radio so it does focus more on the Exeter chances and it can only be a couple of minutes long.

I didn't think about posting on away fan sites until after the edit so in future i'll make sure to make the edit less biased when it isn't only being used in house. I'll take that as constructive criticism!

On the match - I'm surprised someone said Maguire was disappointing. I thought he was incredibly isolated the entire match, but boy does he hold the ball up and run the channels well! Looked a good player at this level to me.

Maguire to my eye looks like another Almond. A willing and eager lad who'll run around all day and will take the odd chance but who will not make the difference between mid-table and play-offs. If, as you hope, we keep him for the rest of the season I'm sure it will make West Ham very happy; they get a season's worth of games for their player.
Meanwhile contracted players sit on their backsides on the bench with little or no chance of improving.

Potter 04-01-2015 12:38

Re: Exeter City Match Thread.........

Maguire was good yesterday. Remember in the first half the flick around his back for McCarten? Darting through a tiny gap in the box and getting a cross in? The pressing in the first half that set the tone for us pinning them back in their half?

The reason Coley didn't change it was because it was working! We were creating chances, keeping the ball pretty well and looked like getting something out of the game if we got a goal!

Liddle played well, yes he does get forward which can leave us short. But him getting forward means we create more and Hunt doesn't push on too much so we do enough cover at the back.

Yes, they were out on their feet. But like I said, remember the pressing in the first half, that takes it toll. And its a balancing act between fresh legs and the fact that our players were doing well in attack.

Finally a word about Joyce. I think he's playing very well at the moment!

cashman 04-01-2015 12:51

Re: Exeter City Match Thread.........

Have to disagree Potter, after our equaliser Exeter put us under the cosh, half the side were out on their feet, and it wasn't just the pressing first half that took its toll, twas the fact some of the lads had been off ill also, It was crying out for fresh legs simple as.

Potter 04-01-2015 13:46

Re: Exeter City Match Thread.........

It was only the last 10 mins where we were put under pressure and that's bound to happen away from home to a good side.

Coleman's not a muppet. In his head he would have been balancing the fact that they were tired against the players we actually had on looking dangerous all afternoon.

As for Accy, horrible team like they've always been. Don't give me all that nonsense about how we should be like that - we shouldn't, it doesn't work and it's not good to look at. We're better than them and since they've been on our radar from the Conference days by and large we've always been better than them with better results, better crowds, better positions in the table and better to watch. But they are a horrible, ugly team who deserve nothing. I hate seeing refs do nothing about petty niggly and snidey fouls, shirt pulling, time wasting, kicking the ball away, running off with it when it's the opposition's throw in or free kick - no wonder their crowds are dreadful - who wants to watch that each week. However, they took their goals well and we should have had the wherewithall to prevent them - I felt for a particularly incensed Hamon when the second went in as he was the only ****** who seemed interested in trying to prevent it.

So a disappointing day all round. We should have won it easily, we certainly had enough about us to win it easily, but once again our frailty when faced with a pub clogger bully-boy team is exposed for all to see. Man up City FFS."
I think they are still remembering and moaning about Cav's brilliant tackle which took out one of their forwards down there in our Conference winning season!

Coleman's not a muppet. In his head he would have been balancing the fact that they were tired against the players we actually had on looking dangerous all afternoon.

Whatever the opinions on Coley's tactical qualities, you have to admire his and Jimmy's great ability to motivate the players he puts on the pitch. Unlike t'other fella!

espn Stanley 8 Exeter 4

No he hasn't, you've misread the bbc stats ....
The 13/14 is total shots...
Shots on target Exeter 3 Stanley 6
That's not a smash and grab to me.

Does anyone else think we are dirtier than other teams? Just looking at yellow cards from yesterday. It sometimes seems referees pick on us or is that my rose tinted glasses?

Read 20 pages on Exeter Blog a few fans said the ref was great and gave them everything,we got bookings for non fouls and Exeter got away with murder we didn't even get a free kick for a double footed lunge that must have been verging on a red card.Plus a Blind linesman who can't see a hand ball right in front of him.

You lot keep saying it was Exeter on top second half/last 10mins when all the match reports say we were on top first half and you second half. I'm just making the point that different people see the game differently having been criticised RE the stats.

Didn't think the ref was terrible, but wasn't great. There were one or two yellow card worthy fouls from your guys but nothing major that would make me call you a dirty team. Certainly didn't here other Ex fans calling you that where I was. There was just quite a few niggley fouls which I thought came from your players pressing so well.

We had four shots on target(one a great save)before you had your first on target that you scored from ,Stanley for the first 10 mins then you.....Second half all Stanley but a lot of pressure from Exeter in the last 10,but we also had some good moves in the last 10....just watch Kal Naithsmiths shot when Aldred scores from the rebound. Also on you tube it shows two of our chances before you scored......so stick to fairy tales and get a degree with honors.

Actually he's not because I agree. I think many times lately including yesterday the attacking players have looked jaded in the 2nd half, but the tactical genius is reluctant to make changes - maybe this is why we havnt scored as many late goals this year (which the manager was actually complaining about recently!!)

excellent win yesterday btw, still think we're lacking up front but 3 points away is great.

Well he was there and he's not the only one who could see that some of Stanley's players were jiggered by about the hour mark. And before you jump to another assumption, the Exeter players did just as much harrying and closing down, but they left the field looking disappointed not exhausted.

A prime example of fresh legs is Kal ,his shot that Tom scored the rebound from was awesome,no one with that was jaded would have wrapped their boot round the ball like that.
