Wycombe (A) Match Thread
Anyone who is venturing down to Wycombe tomorrow night should get recognised by the club, that is one long journey for a mid week game which in truth means very little to Stanley.
Its even longer when you factor in the road works on the motorway. Well done all of you who are going. Lets hope you bring back 3 points. |
Re: Wycombe (A) Match Thread

Re: Wycombe (A) Match Thread
How we playing ?,who's in centre mid ?
|
Re: Wycombe (A) Match Thread
Wycombe up for it, all hands to the pump at the back at times, Scott at his best to keep them down to one. Lovely move down the right for our goal, Pierro zipped a low ball across the box and Gornell was in exactly the right place to tuck it away. Deano moved to midfield, Jimmy doing his nut at the liner, I've had duller Tuesday evenings...

Re: Wycombe (A) Match Thread
That's a bonus point for me !, back it up with three on Saturday and we will be flying again.
Never an easy place to go to,look forward to reading match reports of the loyal fans who made the trip :) |
Re: Wycombe (A) Match Thread
Well done lads, shame we couldn't hold on for 3 points but would've snapped somebodies hand before the game off for that result
|
Re: Wycombe (A) Match Thread
Good result tonight. A point against one of the top teams away is a good outcome but it so easily could have been 3 points!
Well done to John, Jimmy and the team!:mosher: |
Re: Wycombe (A) Match Thread

Re: Wycombe (A) Match Thread
Happy with the point and a very tenacious performance from the lads against a good Wycombe side. We started well, had the better of the early exchanges, but then Wycombe started to come at us and began creating a lot of chances. Scott was down sharply twice to block efforts, and their centre-half missed a sitter, slicing a shot wide from about eight yards out - a good job for us that the ball fell to the centre-half. You had to feel for Scott when we did finally concede as he made a top-drawer save to block another point-blank effort, only for the ball to fall to one of theirs who crossed for an incoming player to knock it in, and even then Scott had got across and nearly kept it out.
As much as we then tried to get back into it, we struggled to make headway, and weren't helped by the officials, particularly the liner down our right who was flagging everything we tried, much to the annoyance of Jimmy, who certainly made his feelings known. Then out of nowhere we produced a gem of a goal, a slide rule pass which took out Jacobson and then a pinpoint, low cross that Gornell slid in for and guided past their keeper. Second-half we started well again. It looked like Coley had tweaked the system, possibly to a 4-2-3-1 with Deano and Joycey in centre-mid, but anyway this was our best spell of the game, culminating in Piero's goal, which he leathered in from the edge of the box into the top corner. We had them on the rack, and for a few minutes after this the home crowd was on the edge of turning as a few passes went astray, and another one for us at this point would have been game over. As it was they started to push us back again, helped by a ref who gave them umpteen free-kicks in the final third, usually for nothing more than 50-50 challenges, and Wycombe were being just as combative as we were. They rarely did anything other than knock a high ball into the box, and we did particularly well defending these, virtually always a Stanley head to them first. One free-kick nearly did make a difference, a neat up-and-over the wall that hit the inside of the post and then out the other side, but we weren't as lucky with their equaliser, which looked from where we were like a Stanley clearance had hit one of theirs and looped in over Scott. As expected, it was a bit backs-to-the-wall after this, but Josh nearly caught their keeper out with a free-kick that he whipped in hard and low, with Terry really unlucky with the bounce as he came in for the rebound. So, a fully-deserved point, and another committed display. Stanley MoM for me was Scott in goal, totally solid throughout and determined to boss his area, which seems to be a dying art. But everyone put a shift in. Results elsewhere could have gone better, which makes Saturday a bit juicier, but this is a decent foundation from which to go for the win. |
Re: Wycombe (A) Match Thread
Well deserved point tonight, real team performance, Wycombes equalizer was as spawny as they come a massive deflection. another complete ****** of a ref, who let em away with murder, how 4 or 5 were not at least booked, must be one of lifes mystery's. roll on sat.:)

Re: Wycombe (A) Match Thread
Excellent summary from Phil and excellent performance from Stanley. After their equaliser it was like the Alamo at times, but I was surprised how much Wycombe simply relied on hoofing speculative balls into the Stanley box. It wasn't a dirty match but the ref was rightly wearing yellow, as he was obviously frightened to penalise Wycombe, and the linesman in the second half flagged for off side every time Gornell dared to step inside Wycombe's half.
Great to see Piero hammer in a goal in front of his dad, again! On leaving the ground one Wycombe fan expressed surprise at Stanley's league position (which got worse despite the point!) as he thought they were one of the best teams he'd seen at Adams Park. I suggested it's because we tend to play well against good teams and less well against strugglers. Which makes the next few games interesting and, as the season grows to its finale and relegation threatened clubs fight for their lives, critical. |
Re: Wycombe (A) Match Thread
Thanks for the reports, everyone, and very well done to Coley and the lads. In theory all our remaining fixtures should give us a good points haul as compared to our last 6 games against top 5 teams. Looking ahead, I just hope Piero can be secured on contract as I feel he is our most influential attacker. We are a shop window club though and I am steeling myself for the usual end of season plunder of our best players.

Re: Wycombe (A) Match Thread
Well done to the players they put a real shift in we rode our luck at times but a great point
well done to john and jimmy who changed tactics on the half hour moving dean to a spoiling midfielder and the awesome crooks to centre back crooksie is a dead ringer for the pompey no 1 fan with the long hair and tatts, anybody ! Only a good point tonight if we beat york on saturday to get us safe! |
Re: Wycombe (A) Match Thread
Pieros goal was magnificent, if a top club player had scored that, people would be talking about it at christmas.:) last night his dad reminded me, the goal he scored yon last season, the one that was a good yard onside, yet the ref said otherwise, woulda put Wycombe outa the league. Its a funny owd game.

Re: Wycombe (A) Match Thread
Excellent report Phil.:)
I like the inclusion of the word "Tenacious" with reference to our boys performance. We need them to be tenacious for the rest of the season too! ON STANLEY ON:mosher: |
