PLAY OFF LEG 2 Home v Wimbledon (0-1 First leg)
Yet another game that can carry the title.......
THE BIGGEST MATCH ONCE AGAIN FOR STANLEY! 0 - 1 down from the First Leg.... Can we do it on Wednesday and get through to the Play Off Final at Wembley?:jimbo: COME ON YOU REDS:theband: |
Re: PLAY OFF LEG 2 Home v Wimbledon (0-1 First leg)
Certainly can do it if we go all guns blazing i reckon, if we dont we will lose.
|
Re: PLAY OFF LEG 2 Home v Wimbledon (0-1 First leg)
I agree Cashy, WE MUST GO FOR IT!
I think that a lot will depend on Coley's starting line up and if he decides to use substitutions as a tactical weapon. I think that some of the starting line up, ie attacking players, could be told that they are being expected to play for only 60 minutes maximum and the subs told that they should all be ready to play and give everything they have for the remaining 30 minutes plus added (and/or extra) time. In other words blitz them with speed, energy and intensity! BLOW 'EM AWAY! If we can get an early goal I think we will blow them away!:jimbo: POSITIVE TEAM, POSITIVE SUPPORTERS, UNITED IN ONE AIM....VICTORY! ON STANLEY ON:theband: ps I would like to see Halliday back in the starting line up. He is so competitive and plays like a TIGER! |
Re: PLAY OFF LEG 2 Home v Wimbledon (0-1 First leg)
Seriously, i think we'll be able to tell after about 15 minutes if we're going to win or do another Stevenage flop. Get at them hard from the first minute. We deserve to be in the final, not them!:cursing:

Re: PLAY OFF LEG 2 Home v Wimbledon (0-1 First leg)
I would prefer us to be solid for the first half, don't concede and they will have a dilemma whether to hold onto what they have.
If we then nick a goal, they will have to come at us and hopefully the game opens up for Billy Kee to Nick the winner. They score first and I think it's curtains :( |
Re: PLAY OFF LEG 2 Home v Wimbledon (0-1 First leg)
Solid in first half aint n option to me, once the beast comes on in second half i prefer a decent lead.

am I the only person who thinks we have hit the woodwork more than enough in our last two games, that it just hasn't to be. Our turn is not here yet . Being positive though , we are safer this season than we have ever been. It been a damn good season and no-one can take that away from us. I will be there tomorrow cheering them on with fingers crossed. It now or never for this season.
|
Re: PLAY OFF LEG 2 Home v Wimbledon (0-1 First leg)
No, those shots that hit the woodwork in last two games were just practice shots, lulling the opposition into a false sense of security - tomorrow will be the night when they all go in, I've seen the trailer ;):)

Re: PLAY OFF LEG 2 Home v Wimbledon (0-1 First leg)
Need to do what Brighton did against Sheffield Wednesday and throw the kitchen sink at them to get the goal back.
That 20 minutes was probably the longest in my life. It was like attack and defence with only the goal keeper keeping them out Having got back on terms we must not doze off and concede a silly equaliser. Then build from there. The longer we don't score the more desperate and disjointed our attacks will get and we will start resorting to the long ball which will be meat and drink to them. And start with Fosu on the Wing. |

IMO after the Stevenage game it was over. our morale and momentum went into reverse gear
even though we started this season as relegation fodder - finished fourth its possibly one of the harshest ways to end a season. Go have a holiday lads - get your **** together and come back and we'll do it all over again and this time we finish the job. well done lads fantastic season nonetheless. |
Re: PLAY OFF LEG 2 Home v Wimbledon (0-1 First leg)
Can't gift the goals we did over two legs and come out on top (their first tonight was typical of silly goals we've given away).
Cracking season but not meant to be. Thanks for a brilliant season boys. We go again in August and hopefully defy the odds yet again. |
Re: PLAY OFF LEG 2 Home v Wimbledon (0-1 First leg)

Even though it was not meant to be, I am proud of the team that Coley and Jimmy put out. Fantastic advert for League 2 football. I did worry at half time when they brought on Akinfenwa and Azeez but Piero's goal seemed to settle us, then we seemed to sit back on a 2 goal cushion, when in reality, we should have gone on to kill the game off. So off on holidays now, but back in August to play the likes of Blackpool and Crewe. Just next season please don't put us through the ringer and get promotion automatically. Good luck to Wimbledon against Plymouth.

Re: PLAY OFF LEG 2 Home v Wimbledon (0-1 First leg)
Game was panning out as I had hoped, tight first half,Nick a goal, score a worldy before they settled, but to their credit, they went 4-3-3 and got back into the game, but it was poor defending all around.
Big disappointment for me tonight was Josh, big fan of his,but last three games he's just not delivered. Moved him around in various positions, but I would of taken him off as he just wasn't at the top of his game. |

Re: PLAY OFF LEG 2 Home v Wimbledon (0-1 First leg)
It's unfortunate and regrettable that I haven't had the opportunity to see Accrington play and grow over the season; but I can't have anything else but pride in every point they have taken this season and as disappointed as I am for John and the lads it's just another short step to the inevitable achievement of highly league football. Ten years ago John Colman said there was no reason why Accrington couldn't make a decent Championship team; they have proved it's not impossible.
Like Mani I believe the season closed at Stevenage and as hard as they fought today their luck, the giveaway goals and the Ref betrayed them. What a shot that second from Piero Mingoia fantastic stuff and little Romy Boco. This is our best team in years; we have good ownership, good leadership, and good a team. Next season we will do it. Thank you Accrington Stanley. Forever Red. And next Season I get to go and see Accy cream the donkey pokers. Cool. |
Re: PLAY OFF LEG 2 Home v Wimbledon (0-1 First leg)

Re: PLAY OFF LEG 2 Home v Wimbledon (0-1 First leg)
What a game, tight first half got the goal to equalise. Then piero scored a worldy that surely was going to send us to Wembley. But no alas a defensive mix up gifts the dons the chance to cross for our nemesis the beast. From there I still felt we could do it but the dons created pressure and edged through. On the Clayton end tonight at times the atmosphere was extremely loud and brilliant. I liked the chant "we'll play in the dark, we are accy Stanley we'll play in the dark". I hope we can keep a lot of this team together for an assault on the automatics again next year. Whatever it's been a great season.

Re: PLAY OFF LEG 2 Home v Wimbledon (0-1 First leg)
Gutted! How can we score a worldy like Piero did & not be going to Wembley?? Wimbledon's bully boy tactics won the game in the end - absolute disgrace that the elbow on Rommy went unpunished - ok, the inept ref eventually gave a yellow for it but it was a red card all day long!!
At the end of the day, Coley asked the lads for a blood & guts performance & to a man they gave just that - so proud of our team tonight, enjoy your summer lads - it's been hard earned, we go again in August, can't wait. P.s. - only 2 months to pre season friendly v Preston, it'll fly by :) |

Re: PLAY OFF LEG 2 Home v Wimbledon (0-1 First leg)
Simply devastated with the result over the two legs!!:(
The Stanley pitch was prepared superbly by 'Buzza' for tonight and it was in the condition for good, passing football to be played on it.:hothothot Stanley played some super passing football but at times some of our passes out of defence went astray! I thought the 'WONDER GOAL' by PIERRO would have made a fitting 'Match Winner'....it was just STUNNING! Pierro had his best game for a few weeks and caused their defence all sorts of problems.:alright: Our defence played well but were under pressure particularly from half time onwards! ....hmmmmm?......Inevitably though, it was a defensive slip that allowed them to score! The 'BIG FELLA' is so difficult to play against, especially when he is allowed to get away with so much pushing and shoving just as he did in the first leg too. He wasn't the only one though as Wimbledon's foul count tonight was 21 to our 7....! I too thought the lad should have been sent off for the elbow in Rommy's face! Or perhaps I am looking for excuses or....... are our Stanley players just not 'dirty' enough? Stanley have played some wonderful football this season and with just a little bit more luck we would have been promoted! Still, it has been really good not to have been worried by the threat of relegation for a change! It will be quite hard for us to keep this team together once again as other clubs will have seen what we have achieved......I really really hope that we can keep the likes of Pierro Mingoia who is a delight to watch. I know that we are losing Windass and Crooks to Rangers but I do hope that we keep the majority of the rest of the squad and that Coley can do some more 'Close Season Magic' and find some more 'GEMS' to replace them. (Rangers are building quite a big squad so who knows, perhaps Crooksy or Windass might come back 'on loan'?) Well done to all at Stanley this season! Here's to another great season next year!:theband: ON STANLEY ON:alright: |
Re: PLAY OFF LEG 2 Home v Wimbledon (0-1 First leg)
Just watched Coley's interview on the 'Fishy' site and he seems to disagree with me about the pitch??? It looked pretty good to me .......especially when I think of the condition it was in when I played on it in the late sixties and seventies! (Last century!)
|
Re: PLAY OFF LEG 2 Home v Wimbledon (0-1 First leg)
Coley looked exhausted in the post match interview. I hope he and Jimmy have a good month off, they certainly deserve it! I'm not taking the p!ss but the Liverpool result won't have helped either. What a crap night he's had!
|
Re: PLAY OFF LEG 2 Home v Wimbledon (0-1 First leg)
Like everyone else who follows our great little club, I was very disappointed with the result. But them's the breaks. So pleased to read on here that our guys 'gave their all' and didn't roll over. I give them and John & Jimmy etc.,my sincere thanks for an exciting season, and I tell you what -'that its much more fun being at the higher end of the table than the lower'. I tip my hat to the Ultras and anyone else that goes to away days. I truly admire you all.
Next season-Same again please. |

I did not go to Wycombe instead seeing my other team Sheffield Wednesday win 3-0 in the clincher for the 4th championship play off place over and against Cardiff. Any happiness over that and our win at Wycombe was ruined by the fact both Oxford and Bristol had won because I knew they would win their games and we would not beat Stevenage 'cos of their form and hold over us and that we would not win the play offs based on last time. |
Re: PLAY OFF LEG 2 Home v Wimbledon (0-1 First leg)
After 10 mins of the Stevenage game, thought that that game would be a game too far for us after all the excitement and emotion at Wycombe. We didn't turn up for that one and got a sucker punch at the very end with Bristol Rovers late goal. Agree with mani on that point.
Another late goal on Sat must have been hard to take for the lads, however thought we did much better tonight. First goal settled us and we looked more like ourselves going forward. Two pools goals to concede has cost us and needed a bit more composure when 2 up. Once we didn't go up automatically I just didn't fancy us to do it through the the play-offs. 85 points got you up automatically last season and will in all probability next season which will be harder for us as another summer squad rebuild with Coley having to unearth 2 or 3 more gems. We're all sick at moment - we'll have a break from it, then be raring to go again in August |
Re: PLAY OFF LEG 2 Home v Wimbledon (0-1 First leg)
Unlucky , the play-offs are very much a lottery.
If you had got the usual 4 or 6 points from us you would have been home and hosed. |

Liked to have seen some Fosu on fire.at some time in the match.Through the middle was a brick wall, but both flanks we could have had em.with a winger +wingback combo on both sides.with Josh more cenrtral, than out wide but then at what sacrifice defensively eslewhere I aint no coach. Fosu is a bit lightweight maybe against a physical defense but he did hit the post at Wimbledon.
These playoff results apart Colemans & Jimmy Bells teams and his style are great to watch..and they always gives us hope even if the prize is never won.. Players come and go but he always seems to produce a few rabbits out of the hat.when they do. Looking forward to next season bash..Lots and Lots of local teams for us to visit if we'd gone up is the saddest bit.. |
Re: PLAY OFF LEG 2 Home v Wimbledon (0-1 First leg)
after the Stevenage game I thought our season was over and it proved to be. proud of the players though as they gave it all last night. if there was justice piero,s goal should have seen us through to Wembley but then the wheels came off with poor defending. as for the boco assault if that wasn,t a sending off I,ve never seen one. had a similar incident the other week when I refereed a sunday game. sent the lad off and no one said a word in dissent. we,ve had ilderton before . he seems more interested in keeping the game flowing than carding people which seems his last resort. hope to see most of the regular players given and signing new contracts and I,m sure we can repeat last season or maybe better.
|
Re: PLAY OFF LEG 2 Home v Wimbledon (0-1 First leg)
Having watched the TV match that I recorded hoping for a different result, it was clear that the referee bottled the goal that Akinfenwa scored. He was clearly holding Tom Davies down to get the header in! Couldn't see it last night due to being at the top end of the Jack Barrett stand. Ref had a brilliant view and how he cannot give a foul is beyond me. As for the elbow on Rommy, Sky presenters called that correctly, straight red, even if he didn't see it, what about the assistants and the 4th official. And if he didn't see it and not given any advice by any of his assistants, how can he give a yellow card? Looking forward to next season already.

Spot on Ozzy, except like the above post I thought it was Matty Pearson Akinfenwa held down for his 'goal' - not that it matters which of our lads it was, it still went unnoticed & unpunished as many of their 'tactics' did. And then the big guy had the nerve to say on sky sports that he thought the lights failure was a ploy by Stanley, Unbelievable!
As for the elbow on Rommy, it was clearly deliberate & yet, while they were celebrating their win the poor lad was in hospital for major surgery - how is that right?? |

Re: PLAY OFF LEG 2 Home v Wimbledon (0-1 First leg)
Thanks for a great season Stanley, it,s been a tonic. Not sure I like the play off format but it,s there so you have to prepare for it. Watched the game last night on stream so had the benefit of several replays. Firstly Stanley looked so good going forward, Wimbledon panicked when they were under pressure with our wide men giving them all sorts of trouble but defensively we were poor, no hard men back there, too much square or back passing and when they did try through balls it was usually to a womble. Their goals were freebees, can,t blame fat man for scoring, it,s his job but trying to stop him standing in front of him?? of course he's going to lean/push, but the cross should never have happened, very poor defense. Yes, the elbow a def. red. Just my take on last night. Thanks Stanley for a brilliant season, can't wait for August.
Thanks also to those who keep us interested and informed with the contests and fund raising, you are priceless. Coley must stay, he is Accrington, has performed miracles on a shoestring, if he goes he can only go downhill. A couple of hard nose defenders please Sir. |
Re: PLAY OFF LEG 2 Home v Wimbledon (0-1 First leg)
Had to miss last night due to work commitments, pretty gutted really as you can imagine.
As others have said the Satanage game was our chance and we didn't take it. Hit the bar 3 times and Bristol Rovers score in the last minute, as Coley said was always going to be a marathon to get the players up for it, so it proved. No doubt its been the best season we have ever had so well done to all involved at the club. Im happy to eat my Coleman humble pie and now we have the incredible Mr Holt running things behind the scenes , things can only get better. As for the lads last night, yes we have lost Windass, I just hope the others can see what have finally started to build (quite literally looking at Mr Holt's twitter feed today) and will sign on the dotted line next season. I don't think I (or Coley for that matter) could take another 6/7 players leaving for nothing alas the last playoff season. Let's go again,WIN it next season and shut those moron's up from down the A1 FOR GOOD ! !!! |

"A Good Big Un CHEATING will always beat a Good Little Un"......makes it IMPOSSIBLE for the Little Un to Win at all! :( |

I've not seen a centre-forward blown up that much since Paul Mullin left us, but I have to say I like the thought of having the Beast laying the ball off to Billy Kee once the Wombles release him 'cos he can't stay the pace in League 1 ....

I thought Charles for Wimbledon was immense, he won everything.
He is way to good for league 2, Wimbledon did well getting him in on loan. |
Re: PLAY OFF LEG 2 Home v Wimbledon (0-1 First leg)
If Wimbledon wanted 1700, why is it that FL rules state they could have up to 2,000 or 10% of capacity, which means they should have had no more than 510 at most, 507 if pedantic. If that is the case, why were Dons fans sitting in the Jack Barrett stand? I thought there was segregation in the Football League? Should have been turfed out and put with their own fans

I can't say i'm happy that the team who finished 10 points below us in the league won promotion through the play offs. Re: PLAY OFF LEG 2 Home v Wimbledon (0-1 First leg)
We lost our way when Billy's shot was disallowed as it crossed the line. A dreadful decision which went unpunished. We never seemed to quite get back on track somehow. We had enough chances to go up automatically but we lost the killer instinct in front of goal. One striker up front never seems to quite work for us. We pass were we could have had a shot and some of our passing was dire at times. But despite all that there no teams that came to Accrington that were any better than us, They just took their chances and half chances, we should learn and there is no reason with the spine and defence we had last season we can't go up this time.
