Doncaster Rovers Match Thread
First match of the new season!:alright:
I just can't wait!:hothothot Stanley v Doncaster Rovers. Rovers relegated last season but will, I am sure, still provide tough opposition.:hidewall: Stanley with another new squad after departures and signings in the summer. Looking forward to enjoying the new facilities in the refurbished Clayton End! Could take a match or three for Coley and Jimmy to find their 'Best Eleven'. Not wishing to dwell on the final stages of last season, but that is history now, and we can look forward to another season in the Football League with ASFC. Who would have thought that just 11 or 12 years ago?:130: I am sure that all of you guys and gals have been as frustrated as me with missing the match experience during the summer. Now we can all get right behind the STANLEY boys IN RED tomorrow and help them get off to a great start.:alright: For once we don't start as relegation favourites but in a strange way that puts a bit of pressure on Coley, Jimmy and the team! Let's all get 100% behind the boys tomorrow!:theband: Sing and shout and give it everything as we always do!:s_gupjump ON STANLEY ON:wave8::drink::signbeer: WITH JIMMY AND JOHN AND ANDY:banane58: |

Re: Doncaster Rovers Match Thread
doncaster have quite a number of players out injured and one is out for the full season. could be a good time to play them. expecting a big away following so should be a good atmosphere in spite of the heat.

Re: Doncaster Rovers Match Thread
It says on the Stanley fishy site that a ticket must be purchased before entry to the ground. Presume you can buy it with cash, but not at the turnstile. Same at many grounds now.

Re: Doncaster Rovers Match Thread
Today's squad
Chapman, Pearson, Hughes, Beckles, Donacien, McConville, Brown, Conneely, Clark, Boco, Gornell SUBS: Parish, Davies, McCartan, Jones, Hery, Hewitt, Eagles |
Re: Doncaster Rovers Match Thread
Full time 3-2 goals from boco, Pearson and mconville in the 91st minute
|
Re: Doncaster Rovers Match Thread
That'll do nicely .... quietly chuffed for Sean Mc :D
|
Re: Doncaster Rovers Match Thread
Well done you REAL BLOKES in RED. Great start.
|
Re: Doncaster Rovers Match Thread
Who said we had no goalscorers? I will take the win every match of the season. OK maybe the defence needs a coat of looking at, but at the end of the day, Stanley got the 3 points and that is all that matters. And as Mab says on another thread/platform, maybe we might drag a few down from Ewood Park after todays disaster for them.

Re: Doncaster Rovers Match Thread
3pts on opening day and a Sean Mc sizzler to delight Cashy's eyes - gonna have a slurp tonite to celebrate !
|
Re: Doncaster Rovers Match Thread
Great 3pts, considering Doncaster played the better football, the winning goal was a cracker, fair play, we need a couple of changes against Bradford though imho.
|
Re: Doncaster Rovers Match Thread
I just like to point out that I backed super Sean to come up with the goods !!!
What you having for tea Cashy, humble pie :) |

Steady, boys, bit early for this. Great three points. Can anyone provide the low down on who impressed?
|
Re: Doncaster Rovers Match Thread
Excellant result against a not so long ago championship and very quick good side after typical 1st game of season early nerves I thought we looked good in spells and think we will do well again this season when we really get going personally I thought Scotty brown was immense and the lad on the right Clarke looked usefull, Omar and Hughsey looked good and if it had,nt have been a bit of a nervous display from Chapman we would have won more convincinley.
|
Re: Doncaster Rovers Match Thread
C'mon Cashy, even you have to admit Sean had a cracking game polished off with a cracking goal, always knew he had it in him :)
Jordan Clark was also impressive, this was obviously also noted by Rovers as they did their best to nobble him! When it went to 2 apiece I was worried as at that point they were playing us off the park but our lads did brilliantly - few teething problems but at the end of the day a bloody good result against a side who were obviously expecting to beat us, about time we had a bit of luck on our side - happy bunny tonight :) |
Re: Doncaster Rovers Match Thread
What a brilliant result, ripped me off for 5 points on the prediction league but I'll take it any day of the week and 2600+ gate, onwards and upwards Stanley.
|
Re: Doncaster Rovers Match Thread
Great win, always makes it better when you overhear their fans calling the ground a ****hole and glad we will only be coming here once, remember Portsmouth fans saying the same, they will be back for the third time later in the season :D

Thought the lads did extremely well to neutralise Doncaster second half until the final stages, and to come back after conceding the second equaliser showed tremendous character. The opposition have one of the biggest budgets in the 4th division, so it was no mean feat to compete as we did. |
Re: Doncaster Rovers Match Thread
Never straight forward watching Stanley, that's for sure.
Firstly big thanks to Andy Holt and team, what they have achieved in 9 weeks since the Wimbledon game is nothing short of a miracle. Cannot wait to see what's in store for the next project. As for the game itself, totally agree with cashman. Thought we where the 2nd best side for the majority of the game, not that it matters at the end of 97 minutes. No doubt Donny will be up there come May in my humble opinion. Fair play to them for travelling in such fantastic numbers. Thought Brown was fantastic in the middle of the park, though obviously tired with the rest of the team after 70 minutes. As others have said, Chapman looked over the place, hopefully its first game nerves, (along with a few others across the back four) but fair play to him for saving the penalty. Also fair play to our favourite Mcconville who actually had a half decent game for once, great finish for the winner. I just hope he doesn't rest on his laurels after that, as there is no doubt we now have some serious competition for places throughout the squad. Will be interesting to see the XI Coley puts out on Tuesday night. |
Re: Doncaster Rovers Match Thread
Just for the record Smudgie, I see you've replaced Buxton with Shay McCarten on your avatar - if he leaves Stanley anytime soon I'm holding you personally responsible

Re: Doncaster Rovers Match Thread
at least we got off to a win to start our season off. probebly an excellent game for any neutrals who came but a draw would have been a fair result. not too sure of some of the new lads yet and i hope coley sticks with the same starting 11 next tuesday as it would be easy to drop a couple without giving them a second chance. how scott brown was not man of the match was beyond be. worked his socks off all game and was unlucky to be cautioned after clearly getting the ball in a tackle. seems to me you can pull someones shirt off their backs but make a full blooded tackle then the card comes out.

Just a mention on the pitch yesterday best I,ve seen it hope it holds up well to the rigours of a full season because if in that condition we will hopefully play the lesser sides off the park and build a fortress at the Wham and attract more and more walk on fans that with the new surroundings will come back for more.

Re: Doncaster Rovers Match Thread
It was a very welcome THREE POINTS yesterday against a good Doncaster side. I agree with Coley in his interview that Doncaster will be at the top or near the top come the end of the season.
My view is that it was a mixed display from our new team. Chapman in goal made some shaky decisions starting with chasing a ball that he was never going to get in the first two minutes. He bundled over one of their players to concede a penalty. However, the big lad saved superbly low down to his right to redeem himself. His kicking was pretty wayward too and he looked like a bag of nerves when receiving back passes that he had to clear! Let's hope that he settles down and grows in confidence because he clearly has the physical attributes and potential in order to do well with us. The right back Donacien was thrown in at just 24 hours notice and he looked shaky in the first half and allowed himself to get on the wrong side of opposing attackers too easily. This was the case for Doncaster's first goal but their lad struck the ball cleanly and low under Chapman. With a bit more familiarity with his team mates in training he should improve. Beckles was trying hard to look after Donacien and was giving him a lot of instruction regarding his positional play. :hothothotSean Mac had a good game too. He did make one or two poor decisions when making tackles and he was lucky not to have a penalty awarded against him midway in the second half when he clearly shoved one of their forwards in the back. However, he took his winning goal superbly! It was indeed a super pass from Seamus that just cleared their centre-half. At first I thought that Sean was going to try and blast the ball, and could see the ball flying over the top of the Clayton End, but he kept his head, leapt high and side footed the ball, using the pace of the cross to guide it round Etheridge to score a fabulous goal! First half was pretty even but Donny dominated the second half and we really struggled to get out of our defensive 'third'. Pearson took a 'potshot' from thiry yards and the daisy cutter drifted away from Etheridge beautifully to sneak into the bottom corner. Keep shooting Matty and you will score more goals for sure. Terry soldiered on bravely up front but he didn't get much good service. Shay caused them problems when he came on and Eagles could be a great addition too. I agree with comments already made that Scott Brown was our best player. He was all over the pitch contributing defensively with some good tackles and offensively with some great creative play too! The pitch looked superb and the newly refurbished facilities in the Clayton End also looked splendid! A good start IMHO with the promise of some good things to come once the new squad has played themselves in after a few matches. If we can win a reasonable number of points over the first half dozen matches then we could kick on and challenge near the top again! ON STANLEY ON:theband: KEEP THE FAITH:wave8::drink: |
Re: Doncaster Rovers Match Thread
League 2 goalies must have had a collective 'mare. Chapman is in the EFL Team of the Week.
