What does YON mean????

Despite supporting Stanley for over a decade, I'm still to understand all the local slang.

Can someone kindly explain what yon means?

My best mate Cashman likes to use it (alot!).

You serious? Quite simple - if something's over yon, it means it's over there. Or if someone says yon Mon it means that person.

always one who,s in favoir of keeping local words and phrases alive. local news should be given by a person with a local dialect. can get you in trouble though as one thing can at times mean another in some parts of the country.

As Yonmon I could go off on one of my convoluted dissertations at this point Dav.....and although sorely tempted...I'll control myself !.

Sufficient to say that a reasonable translation of 'Yonmon' would read thus...

' That gentleman over there ! '.....which, I suppose makes me that gentleman over there !.

Nuff sed theer lad !.

ON STANLEY.....ON TO GREATER THINGS !!.

It is in the past tense so it has already been done.

"Yonder peasant who is he" just old English back to the topic.

To keep this 'on topic' , one of my favourite dialect words, which I've never heard outside of Accy and rarely hear it there now, is 'punce'.
But maybe some of the long ball aficionados in the moaners' stand still use it.

Once many years ago on what was to eventually turn out to be The Wham Stadium, I heard the expression...' Punce 'im in t'stooans ' emanating from one of the Stanley stalwarts there who shall be nameless !. ( Sorry Sherry and AccyMad for the vulgar allusion !).

It seemed to me at the time that 'punce' was the only expression powerful enough to use in that situation, leaving 'kick' far behind !.

'PUNCE'....an excellent, if seldom used, 'lanky' word ?.

Re: What does YON mean????

Punce was abbreviated by lazy YonSoutherners to Punt.

"Punce it to Yonmon"

By the way, I've heard sheep botherers in the county to our East refer to us as "yonners" owing to our over use of the word
