Re: Crawley smash and grab
It certainly is Lord Didsbury.
He does a good job all round to be fair. I'm not sure whether he gets paid or not but if he does now, then it hasn't always been the case, he didn't even get a haircut for about 5 years! |

Very good extended highlights. Jesus, terrible decision not to give a penalty.

Going off them, on another day we coulda won 3/4 nil.

Re: Crawley smash and grab
Crawley manager was on Talksport. Very nice about Stanley and said it should've been a penalty.
I also listened to the game on Crawley FM or whatever their local station is and they were all glowing about Stanley's performance. All nice to know if not very useful. |
Re: Crawley smash and grab
And still he persists with Gornell. I give up!

Re: Crawley smash and grab
Just watched the 'extended' highlights courtesy of Lord D....
Looks like we should have won by a score of something like.... 5-1 !!!!! ps Why change the 'Winning Formula' from the Blackpool match.....? Which was to bring on Gary Taylor-Fletcher and Rommy Boco with 30 minutes left. Which was clearly the main part of the formula and why we beat Blackpool! |
Re: Crawley smash and grab
Guys, don't confuse a condensed three minutes of 'highlights' with the whole match. There were 90 other minutes of play that weren't considered a highlight.
If, when I was leaving the ground, someone had told me that was a 20 shot performance from Stanley I'd have questioned their sanity. Don't get me wrong, Stanley were, on balance, the better team and created more chances than their hosts, but that performance was quite some way off the same game last season. Maybe sitting at the back of the stand prevented Professor Coleman from getting instructions to the bench but, by about the hour mark, certainly by 70 minutes, Stanley were crying out for someone who knows where to be to get a shot at goal and/or, having got the chance, knows how to convert it. Given he's only here until the New Year, I was surprised the Fletch didn't come on for Gornell who, as ever, ran his heart out but was struggling both with a ref, who unfairly penalised his every challenge, and staying on his feet. By the way, as regards the latter problem, Gornell was not alone in slipping and sliding. I wonder if it was because the Crawley pitch is half plastic? Do the slippers that players wear these days not grip as well on semi-artificial surfaces? |

Re: Crawley smash and grab
Late to this having gone away straight after the game, but agree with most above - the "penalty" looks much more obvious on the highlights than I thought at the time! And I reckon most of our 9 "shots on target" happened within 2 minutes.
For me, Matty was our standout player, an absolute rock in defence, and if his run through had brought the winner he would have been a shoo-in for "Team of the Week" or whatever. Regarding Terry Gornell, I thought he ran himself out for very little change. But I certainly don't agree that Rommy would be a better choice, not in that role anyway. It's not pretty, but in this league (imho!) you always need someone to get under the route 1 clearance hoofs to try and lay them off or hold them up, and Rommy couldn't hope to do that job. Terry's not as good as Billy Kee at holding the ball up, but he was winning a fair proportion of the first balls in the air, and laying them off (not his fault there wasn't usually anybody there). I would have liked to have seen GT-F given a go though. Brilliant save by Elliot early on - it would have been a grim afternoon if we'd gone behind then. And at the risk of opening a can of worms in a week when nobody's whinged about Sean's performance, I thought his dead ball deliveries were vastly improved over what I've seen from him before. And was he wearing the armband? Overall, I thought we were much the better side and deserved all the points, but was always nervous of the risk from a quick break, and wouldn't have been the least bit surprised if we'd given away a late winner. So I went away not altogether unhappy ...... |

Good summary, Chimer, obviously the purity of Czech beer had no impact on the clarity of your memory.

Re: Crawley smash and grab
That be a point thats rarely made - dead ball deliveries. We never seem to have anyone who we could consider a free kick specialist :(

Re: Crawley smash and grab
Here's a question which someone may be able to answer - when was the last time Stanley scored from a corner?
