Match Thread FA Cup Round 1 v Bradford City

A welcome change from matches in League Two but still an important match from Stanley's point of view.
After a poor performance and result last weekend v Newport it will be interesting to see what the starting eleven and the players on the bench will be that Coley and Jimmy put out tomorrow.
Stanley need to restore the faith of our supporters with a very positive display tomorrow. Our 'Away' form has been quite good this season so we should all look forward to our boys doing well tomorrow. Coley has suggested on the 'Fishy' site that he might change the 'Personnel' in order for our lads to be more positive. Let's hope so.
As travelling supporters we can play our part too by being positive and by getting behind the team vocally and by flying the red and white colours.
Last Saturday I was one of the few still singing, after the match, that wonderful refrain.....
"Stanley 'til I die....I'm Stanley 'til I die.....
I know I am, I'm sure I am, I'm Stanley 'til I die!":alright:
But let's hope we are singing it all the way home tomorrow evening with a victory and an eye on the Second Round Draw!:hothothot
ON STANLEY ON:theband:
KEEP THE FAITH:cheers:
STANLEY 'TIL I DIE

will be very interested to see what the starting line up is and if the changes that are made are not enforced by loan players not being allowed to play. we usually do ok at bradford but they seem to be finding the net with 6 goals in the last 2 games. got to be positive as there,s no point going otherwise.

Ah, the magic of the cup!
It could not be setup any better. Bradford, all cock and swagger after their recent form. Stanley smarting from last week, but playing away from home.
I think we'll get an early goal, face a barrage for the next hour then nick a late one.
We've already arranged a quick getaway back across the Pennines for a Didsbury ****up celebration (with a Bradford fan in tow). The Punk IPA is on ice....

Let's get reaaaadddy to rumble.

Just been listening to Dan on radio lancs and people want to why Chris Eagles is not even in the squad, The changes are enforced due to injury. At least Mark Hughes is getting a run out. The experienced players we have are not getting a look in. When other people are noticing that experienced higher league players are not even making the bench it does need some explanation from our manager. Todays game it has been suggested a 3-5-2 is the way to take today's match. Good luck Stanley I can't be there today. We need to have a discussion on the quality of referees and other officials given there is a severe shortage of officials. Radio lancs made some interesting comments. Perhaps a sensible thread.

If last week was rock-bottom, today was top-notch.
There is only one word to describe Stanley's performance at Valley Parade - SUPERB!
If only we could play like that every week, we'd be top of league 1, never mind league 2. McConville had one of his best games. Romy re-payed Coley's faith in starting by scoring a superb goal & ran himself into the ground, giving his usual 101%. However, it's unfair to pick-out individuals as every jack-man of the team were outstanding.
Brilliant support from our fans who again out-sang the home crowd.
Some great craic on the train home with returning Palace fans boarding at Burnley, who are looking forward to drawing us in the 3rd round. Please God, let it be at Selhurst Park!
Never been so proud to be a Stanley fan.

Re: Match Thread FA Cup Round 1 v Bradford City

Yes, Clark was outstanding.
We'll have to disagree re Terry. I'm no big fan of his but thought he was much improved.
Parish is ok but do you think he commands his area as much as he should? I'd like to see him coming out for crosses more. Some crucial stops today though and he's consistent with kicking and not spilling shots.
I thought Paddy had a decent game too.

A final thought before falling into alcohol fuelled slumber.
Coleman got a lot of stick on here last weekend. Without wishing to carry on that debate, I did think around the 50-55 min period just how the hell Coleman had taken a club from the lower reaches of non-league to the point where we were handing out a footballing lesson to a cub 10x the size of ours. A hell of an achievement.

My summary from reading 14 pages of match banter from the Bantams forum:
1. They unsurprisingly thought their team was very poor. They think McCall made too many changes to the side (although prior to the match I think they thought he'd picked a fairly strong side)
2. They thought Accy were the better team. Superior passing and movement
3. Boco got the most praise (they'd prefer him up front than any of their forward) followed by Gornell and Clark
4. They thought subbing Marshall off was a bad move
5. They wish Accy well and hope we have a good cup run

talking to a couple of bradford fans going home on the bus and they more or less said the same. really impressed with boco and couldn,t believe he only gets a few mins. on the pitch in some games. they liked clarke and sean as well. they made 6 changes from last week but the ones that played are regular squad members. on a personal note we are good at having a go at players who underperform so lets give tribute to them when they do. sean had his best game since coming back. clarke and lacey had there best games for us and mr.boco deserves daily mirror headlines for his performance. as i,ve said a week is a long time in football and yesterday showed it.

How many fans did we take yesterday? Watching the just over 1 minute highlights(other teams got 5,6 even more minutes)on the BBC page i heard quite a bit of noise when Jordan Clarke's goal went in.

Rommy Boco's headed goal was a stunner! If that's been scored in that Chelsea Everton match they had on the tv last night they'd have been crowing about how good it was.

Will be interesting to see who starts next match.
The Don will return. Of that I have no doubt.
Will Vyner get his place back so easily though?
Boco can't be overlooked. I hope.
Could Clark and McConville stay as they are? Makes sense to me. O'Sullivan on the bench.
Kee back for Terry?

Amazing what yesterday has done. An embarrassment of riches all of a sudden.

Out of all the options I really hope Boco starts. I think it just gets the team moving and passing more from the outset.

was unable to go to the Bradford Match but it does sound like the Stanley we had got used to last season. Now I asked last week had the management taken the club as far as they could which provoked a good debate. I now find myself asking why so many players were so far off the pace last week. I am sure you all have as well. Lord D has made some valid points, Why can we not play much better in the league at home? We then look at the choice of players. Mark Hughes is a favorite of mine as a no-nonsense defender, I am still wondering why Chris Eagles has not played a bigger part as he has the knowledge and experience to help many other players in the team. Ultimately that is down to the manager. None of us have agreed with all his decisions despite having a great track record of bringing the club to where it is today. He would readily admit he gets it wrong as well. I am glad we got the result we deserved. Now MAN U on Monday would be helpful.

My mistake- he wasn't dropped but suspended and in the interim lost his starting berth.
His suspension coincided with our little run of form in September and the Pearson/Beckles combo.

As if Coley would drop a scouser.

Nice to hear some positive publicity from the talking heads on the BBC FA Cup highlights programme earlier today. Credited as the most impressive victory of the first round, with Jordan's goal highlighted during the summary. Coley's tenure spoken of in glowing terms with a consensus that it is nothing short of a miracle that Accrington Stanley continually exceed all expectations on low gates & a shoestring budget.
I wonder if all those armchair Accy 'fans' paying a king's ransom to Sky to watch footie on their 42 inch HD TV sets were tempted to actually go & see a real 'live' game of football once in a while? Sadly, somehow I doubt it.

[QUOTE=Chrisr;1180788] Why can we not play much better in the league at home?

the problem is with stanley if a team plays football against us we do well but at home teams tend to put 9 men behind the ball, get in our faces and know we have a problem in defending set pieces so they know they,ll eventually get a chance to score. quicker movement when we have the ball would help.

Correct, therefore we need to come up with another formation, that we can alternate between.

I remember the other season when we beat top of the table Burton, we played 3-5-2.

Having, GTF, Kee, Gornell, Boco and Shay, plus, Omar, Matty P, Hughesy, Zak, etc. would be very easy to swap it around - just a thought.. :)

Re: Match Thread FA Cup Round 1 v Bradford City

It was a great display from the Stanley on Saturday and we fully deserved our win! Enforced changes with both full backs injured had some of us worried at the start of the match but the rejigged formation worked pretty well. Sean Mac looked much more comfortable on the right and probably had his beat game of the season so far. Clarke was super on the left and his well taken goal capped a great performance. Terry put a real shift in and he got much better service with more passes played in to his feet than last week which enabled him to link up better with supporting team members. The defence looked pretty solid once more and Lacey did really well at right back. Seamus once again made the midfield tick and he was the hub of our good passing football. The 'Man of the Match' for me though was Romy Boco. His 'energy' and hunger were obvious from the start and he set the standard when he crashed a 25 yard shot against the woodwork early on. This seemed to instill total belief in the whole team that we could beat Bradford. A great move down the right and Sean found romy superbly at the near post for a cracking headed goal to put us deservedly in front.:theband:
When we were still the one goal in front after about ten to fifteen minutes in the second half Bradford started to put the pressure on and myself and those around me were looking for Coley to bring on some fresh legs. Bradford equalised and we feared the worst but the fresh legs came from players already on the pitch!!!!.....Rommy, Sean, Terry and Clarkey and the others who just rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in again!! The substitution came with Shay coming on and that helped too and we got the winner with that stunning goal!!!!......A very astute back header by Boco found Clarke who got a yard on his full back and slid his shot beautifully across the Bradford keeper for a truly worthy winning goal!:alright::wave8:

Of course we were all stunned into silence when Shay had the problem but the players nearby spotted that it was serious and waved for immediate action with both clubs trainers and the medics coming straight on.
It cast a cloud over a great performance and I am sure that we all hope and wish for Shay to fully recover.

Sorry to sound pedantic but it reads as though the substitution happened before the winner - It didn't.
Also a big slap on the back to the fourth official because had he not been pratting about Clicker would have been subbed before the goal.
