2016/17 Prediction League; Game 31 v Cambridge (home)

You may remember the 1st October 2016, especially if you were at the Abbey (Road Studios) Football Stadium for the game between Cambridge and the Stanley .......... that was the game where Billy Whizz equalised on 51, Piero Mingoia gave them back the lead, and then their Captain (Leon Legge) and their def/MF Brad Halliday both conceded penalties in Time Added On, Legge being red carded for upending El Tel in the box, and Brad for punching Matty Pearson’s header off the goal line .............. they were both sent off, and – as only we can do – we missed both penalties! Take a bow Chris Eagles and Terry Gornell ................. Brad, by the way, has only played once since the end of December, and is currently out injured “for a few weeks” following some problem from the Luton game

Nearly as bizarre are their results sequences for the season to date; they won on Saturday (see “Cambridge 3 Newport 2” below); before that they’d drawn two and lost four out of 6, and prior to that they’d won 6 and drawn 1 of the preceding 7 games .......overall they’re showing a record of 12 wins, seven draws, and twelve losses out of 31 played, with 40 scored and 37 conceded for 43 points and 13th place; away, they’ve won 6, drawn 4 and lost 5, doing Notts Co 1-0, Stevenage, Exeter and Newport (all 2-1), Crawley 3-1, and Hartlepool 5-0; they ended last season 9th with 68 points from 46, 7 points off the play-off places

They haven’t done massive amounts in the transfer window; they’ve ProperSigned H/pool LB Jake Carroll (I think I know his brother Lewis), and CMs Paul Lewis from Macclesfield and Liam O’Neil from the Spireites, and on loan they’ve added Blackburn’s CB Scott Wharton and Notts Forest CF Gerry McDonagh ................... The Down Train took Irish DM Keith Keane to Rochdale, RB Elliot Omozusi to the JobCentre (Plus!), and Blair Adams – who doubled as a trainer of bears under the pseudonym “Grizzly” and as Prime Minister as well – departed for Hamilton Academicals, although why he’d want to give up football for teaching completely escapes me .......................

This, of course, is one of our Games In Hand; apart from us v Cambridge, Tuesday features only Colchester v Wycombe and Newport v Morecambe; I’ve no strong views about the Colchester game, but a Morecambe win at the Newport Mudpatch would be very handy. Newport might be a bit pi55ed off about Saturday’s game (at Cambridge!); looking for only their second win in 17 (the first was v Hartlepool), they were 2-0 ahead just before the hour, conceded one on 63, and then shipped an equaliser on 72 .............and then they conceded a penalty on 90 (losing Mitch Rose to a red card into the bargain), which penalty was saved by the Newport GK, only for the rebound to go straight to a Cambridge player, and then straight past the GK into the net ......... it might be relevant to point out that Cambridge had 27 shots (10 on target) to Newport’s 7 (6), and also won the Corners Contest 8-1 ...............but a 93rd minute winner against you, and a defeat snatched from the jaws of at least one point ...........I tell you, when you’re down, everyone kicks you ...... and speaking of red cards, did you see that that Nice Mr Evans was sent to the stands by the fourth official, where (according to the Press Association) he “clashed with the Blundell Park Security staff” ................ not that he accepts that he did, you understand ..... and even if he did, it was better than the last time he got into bother there (reported as 2006) when – as Manager of Boston, and following a protest about a decision by the Ref – he was apparently ejected from the ground altogether!

So; approaching the Business End of the Season (whatever that means) how are things looking? Well, three points was a pleasant surprise on Saturday; of the other strugglers, Notts County went to Leyton Baines, let slip a two-goal lead, and got an 84th minute winner from the boot of Journeyman Jon Stead, Hartlepool drew 1-1 with Plymouth, and Cheltenham beat Yeovil 2-0 ..........oh, and Crewe snook a Desmond at Blackpool (Tom Aldred on the score sheet there) ............that leaves Crewe tailed off, with 25 points from 31; Orient have 29 from 32; Hartlepool have 32/32, as have Cheltenham; Notts County have 33/32, we’ve got 33/30, and Alexandra has 36/32. All to play for, then ......... We’ll no doubt have a few Games of Two Halves coming up!

Deadline for entries is, as always, scheduled kick-off time, which is 7.45pm on Tuesday 21st February. Our defeat on 1st October was the first time we’ve lost to them since they re-joined the League – before that it was two draws and two wins for the Stanley (3-2 and 2-1) – and hopefully will be the last, at least for this season ...........we need the points more than them! Their leading scorer, by the way, is MF Luke Berry (wears no 8, product of their Youth System, all apart from one season that he played for Barnsley) with 15; he was also last season’s leading scorer (with 13) ...........and – just an idea, this ............. shall we all ring up and vote for Morecambe to win tomorrow, just to stretch the gap between Newport and the rest of Civilisation a little further?

Good luck to everyone! .......... Keep the Faith! .......... And thanks for playing!

After Saturday's nourishment, the Voodoo Gods demand more human flesh - I offer 0-2 to the Cantabrigians!

PS, yes I remember that awful outcome on October 1st. At the time I was outraged that not a single Stanley forward had the nous to follow up either penalty (once = lazy, twice = stupid). Cambridge won their game last Saturday because the rebound fell to one of their players because he was running in for that precise reason! Stanley players please note.

2016/17 Prediction League; Game 31 v Cambridge (home)

On 21st February this game didn’t happen, to the Great Annoyance and Disturbed Equilibrium of our West Country Friend (I use the term loosely) .... then we were 19th, with 33 points from 30 games .........we’d beaten Notts County 2-0 and Colchester 2-1, and drawn 4-4 at Mansfield, and The Run was on ...............now we’re 15th, but with 49 points from 38 games, and we’re the form team in the League, calculated by the number of games without defeat (10, and we’re the only side not to have lost in 10); in fact, if you count back, of our last 16 in the League we’ve won 7, drawn 7 and lost 2, and of our last 10 we’ve won 5 and drawn 5, which is form, over a season, which would get you 92 points, and probably the League title

Cambridge, like us, have had their (non) moments over the season; they started with 3 draws and 5 defeats in their first 8 games, but then started to turn it round, winning 10 of their next 14, and currently they’re 12th, five points plus 11 goals outside the playoffs, with 54 points from 38 games (so 51 points from their last 30 games if you deduct their start to the season)

Seven games left for everybody (not counting this game), and it isn’t happening for a few sides; Orient, obviously – seven defeats in their last eight, and seven points from safety with a substantially worse GD than Cheltenham in 22nd (-29 against -16); Newport, despite Mike Flynn’s efforts – 6 points in his first two games was followed by one in the next three, and they’re six points adrift; Morecambe have just lost their sixth game in a row; Carlisle have one point from their last seven, haven’t scored in any of them, have conceded 14, and are now out of the playoff places in 8th, having been 3rd seven games back, on 58 points from 32 played, five points ahead of Luton in 4th and 12 points above Stevenage, then in 8th ..............Stevenage look good value for 4th place – W7 D2 L1 of 10 – but they’re six points off Pompey (did you see that Kal Naismith is their leading scorer? And that Matt Crookes got the winner for The Iron when they did Bratfud 3-2?)

Top 3 look solid; then it looks like four from seven – Blackpool have snuck into the playoffs, Luton holding on by their finger nails, Colchester winning enough still to be thereabouts ...............to be real, too much for us to do, but we’re safe, you’d think, even if not mathematically – we’re 16 and 17 points above The Doomed (“Aye Cap’n Mainwaring, we’re doomed .........we’re all doomed ........”) with only 21 available to play for after Tuesday, so a win against Cambridge would box it off nicely .............and anyway, we owe them for earlier in the season ..............

Their leading scorers are MFs Luke Berry, now with 17, Piero Mingoia and Medy Elito with 7 each, and defender Leon Legge with 6 .....Billy Whizz leads with 13 for us, and Shay and Goldenboots are both on fire, particularly from free kicks in and around ........... and long may it remain so!

Those who wish to change their February predictions, please feel free to do so, but if you want to stick, you’re not compelled to twist ......... if you follow my meaning!

Good luck to everyone! ............ Keep the Faith! ............ And thanks for playing!

AccyMad Back On Top Again As Kiwi Twists And Busts

We were perhaps a little worried by how close Grimsby came to ending the run on Saturday, so while only 4 psychologists went against us, 7 undecideds leapt onto the fence . Of these 11, only TomD salvaged a point for “Stanley 2”. At least 3 points went to the remaining 18 loyalists, 11 taking 4 and just Cashman :) and DaveinGermany :) picking up maxis. Dave’s was enough to lift him from 9th to 6th, and Cashy’s from 13th to 12th. NigeB squeezed into the Top Ten for the first time this season, at the expense of MonkeyHanger, who dropped from 6th to 11th, while Accybeme’s selfless and self-inflicted plunge towards the foot of the table continued as he fell to 15th.

Meanwhile at the very top, Kiwi twisted from 2-1 (worth 4 pts :)) to his traditional 1-1 (worth nowt :(), leaving AccyMad’s 3-2 (worth 3) to take her back to the summit with 7 games to play. 35 points on offer, so in theory everyone down to Winstanley in 26th place could still take the title, just as in theory a play-off place for Stanley still shimmers in the far distance under the heat of the desert sun :hothothot (yes, I know, I’ve lost it …).

Speaking of losing it, Dav007 stuck with his original entry, which he hadn’t made . But perhaps he was being ironic . AngeB almost followed suit ....

Anyway, roll on the Pilgrims. They do wobble at this stage of the season, but it’s a big ask. But the answer is yes! :D

On Stanley On!
