Crawley - a must win game at the Theatre of Wham
Team anyone? I'll be amazed if we are not unchanged but hope Husin comes in - even at the expense of the excellent Don sitting it out.
As Lord Stiff has said elsewhere the teams above us have tricky games. We must bury Crawley early and hope for the best. Hopefully the magnificent new screen will be used to relay news of defeats for Carlisle, Exeter and the rest to round off a marvellous Easter. |
Re: Crawley - a must win game at the Theatre of Wham
My Lord Didsbury. I too do favour both brave Edwards and Husin for their skill and vigour and hope to see them take the field this day.
Let us hope that when we leave victorious and fellows ask - 'What of Exeter & Carlisle?' The response will be - 'both fallen'. Let us gird our loins, Gentlemen. The games afoot! |
Re: Crawley - a must win game at the Theatre of Wham
Today's ref is David Webb, he who sent off Elliott Parrish in the league cup game v Bradford early on this season - hope he behaves himself today

Crawley Town, if my memory serves me right, always try to play football whilst proving to be a bit combative. The surface should be slick and therefore suit the passing game which we have all come to know and love from the Reds. All the ingredients for an afternoon of Soccer fun ?..I think so!. KTF... Sitting on the fence here !!, never change an unbeaten team or two game in four days may need fresh legs !!
That's what Coley gets paid for :) |

Morcambe VS Colchester Doncaster VS Blackpool Cambridge VS Exeter Carlisle VS Stevenage Mansfield VS Luton My unbiased predictions Colchester to win will put them on 64 points Donny to win N/A Exeter to win will put them on 68 points Carlisle to draw will put them on 64 points Mansfield to draw will put them on 62 points Blackpool to lose will put them on 61 points Cambridge to lose will put them on 60 points Luton to draw will put them on 68 points Stanley win will put us on 62 points this would put us in a good position for the 6th & 7th play off places |
Re: Crawley - a must win game at the Theatre of Wham
Never know Morecambe might do us a favour to stop themselfs been dragged into the relagation fight, can see Luton beating Mansfield
|
Re: Crawley - a must win game at the Theatre of Wham
It's all very confusing ..... do we want Exeter, Luton and Stevenage to win, knocking Cambridge, Carlisle and Mansfield back, or to lose, bringing them (E,L & S) back into the middle of the play-off fight - or would 3 draws be the best possible outcome? What we certainly want is Donny and Morecambe to win - and us of course!
|
Re: Crawley - a must win game at the Theatre of Wham
Don't confuse me, i want us to win the last 4, if we do, whatever will be,will be.;)

Agree absolutely Cashy, we can't do any more than carry on our run & if we do that but other results don't quite go how we'd like we can have no complaints - we can't influence what the others do so no use worrying about them

Plymouth and the snakes both promoted today
|
Re: Crawley - a must win game at the Theatre of Wham
Hard battled 3 points. We tried to play out from back to drew Crawley out but as a fan it did feel abit harem scarem! This may have helped billy kee though as he had abit more space and was a far more effective player than of late(holding up and winning lots of ball). Mccartain and mcconville combined for another moment of magic to win us the game. Matty Pearson was everywhere. Although the defences passing left something to be desired they defended stoutly. Although not the best performance (atmosphere was not as vocal as usual on the Clayton end), the important thing was to grind out the win which we did. As a fan i wanted to sub Clark and just change things up a bit but coley probably knows best!

Re: Crawley - a must win game at the Theatre of Wham
Seemed like a very nervy performance and we can expect more of the same. If we aren't in the play off places at the end of next week then I don't think we will be at the end of the season. We never seem to have the mental strength when the chips are down especially against Stevenage. I hope I'm wrong as I'll never hear the end of it for another season
|
Re: Crawley - a must win game at the Theatre of Wham
Never have I been more relieved to hear the final whistle than today.
Considering the prize dangling within our grasp, I expected the team to come out with all guns blazing. Instead it was a nervous, disjointed display, especially in the first half when we presented the ball to Crawley in our own penalty box too many times. They had two gilt-plated opportunities in front of goal in the first half and, thankfully, managed to fluff both The team appeared somehow unbalanced. Even following Shay saving our bacon in the 48th minute, we were on the back foot for large parts of the game. I'm Matty Pearson's biggest fan, but he's wasted in midfield, especially when we have young Husin warming the bench, who IMHO is quicker and more creative in that role. Once again, our opponents used three subs which seemed to improve things for them. Even in the last twenty minutes, when we were crying out for fresh legs, our manager remained impassive to change. This was frustrating as there were certain players who's performance could best be described as inept. I would have replaced Conneely (poor) with Husin, McConville (worse) with Boco and Kee, who got fouled & manhandled all-game, with the livelier & quicker Edwards, if only for 15 minutes. Other results largely went our way & we find ourselves a mere 2 points from seventh spot. If we can put in such a poor performance & still win, I'm starting to believe anything is possible. Disappointed with the new much vaunted electric scoreboard, which was basically little more than a glorified clock. |
Re: Crawley - a must win game at the Theatre of Wham
Well it was by no means pretty but 3 points is 3 points - I thought our lads looked jaded today & were crying out for subs to freshen things up but didn't see any of ours even warming up - except for Brayden Shaw early in first half
I can understand not wanting to change things round when we're on such a run but the lads did look tired today imho |

Today the lads were tired 2 games in 4 days what else can you expect course they're not going to put plenty of effort in when they've non left to give cus they're knackered, afew days rest and in to the next one where they can put 100% in

Once we went 1-0 up ,there's no need to "freshen" it up,more keep what you have !!, When we are chasing the game, that's a different matter, especially if we're not creating much |

Can't comment on game as I wasn't there, but I would suspect he did his defensive duties as we didn't concede again !!
I must confess tho,one of the reasons we have had a decent run is going two up front (which Cashy was screaming for!), I wasn't sure as the system we had was successful for a few years, but it goes to show, evaluate your squad, then choose the system that suits them !!! |
Re: Crawley - a must win game at the Theatre of Wham
Well I was very pleased. That defence of ours is finally proving too good to not get us promoted. We have a confidence and ability to win when not playing well.
I thought Matty P did pretty well and didn't think there was much point changing things after we scored since Crawley carried little threat. The big telly was top. I liked the old piccies at half time although displaying the skipper as no 27 was a schoolboy error. Not much singing today. There was a stifled chant of "do you take it up the ass Accyweb" which was quite amusing. |
Re: Crawley - a must win game at the Theatre of Wham
We were tired and jaded today and we got away with it. Crawley were sharper and their passing was more accurate than ours. We managed to grab a goal and hang on for dear life and it worked. I am a little critical of the failure to use the subs more often. The lad Edwards is a great prospect and has done well for the short spells he gets on the pitch. Husin is a good player and will get much better with a bit more experience under his belt. There are some good options on the bench that could have kept a grip on the game. But well done as we got three points more. A bg ask ahead of us but who knows. We have to be proud of the achievement of 14 games unbeaten so far. At Christmas I was one who was getting worried about our league status. But that is gone I just hope we can scrape through to the play off's. We can dare to dream.

Re: Crawley - a must win game at the Theatre of Wham
I think we have to accept that if Matty is in midfield then we are going to pose less threat down the wings. Not enough creativity and good passing to bring our wide men into play.
Not sure I could stand a full season like that but happy enough to keep this formation for the last three games if it means we win them. Coley was right about the pitch. Hard and bobbly it was. Amusing to watch the belated attempts at half time to water it - drenching the poor kids playing 5-a-side. |
Re: Crawley - a must win game at the Theatre of Wham
Ps, the booking of Hughes looked like one of the dumbest decisions I've seen in ages. apart from that, a decent game from the officials.

Sorry, should have read -
Unbeaten run of 14 games! Even more PATHETIC! |
Re: Crawley - a must win game at the Theatre of Wham
No use saying that on here, you're preaching to the converted.
Problem is, the greater population who watch for our results & might even pop along to an odd game aren't likely to be as excited as we are about an unbeaten run, brilliant as it is - if we were in top few & odds on to get promoted then we'd probably have seen more bodies at the Crown yesterday. Yes, the weather was good but again, people who don't come regularly would probably rather make the most of the sunshine elsewhere. And reduced prices, yes great it was a fiver cheaper but was that fact made known publicly enough? It was on the fishy site of course but again, unless you were thinking of coming anyway it's not likely many would check on there - not sure if it was in the Observer but it should have been, also broadcast on Radio Lancs & flyers given out in town. There did seem to be a few new faces around us in the stand but on the other hand a few regulars were missing, maybe away for Easter - who knows? The fact is, a 1600 odd crowd with only 50 from Crawley was actually not a bad gate for us - not great but about what we expect at the moment |
Re: Crawley - a must win game at the Theatre of Wham
i thought the gate was a slight improvement, given only a mini came from Crawley.

said before the game we need to use our squad better especially the use of subs. a few of our lads were running on empty near the end of the game and like for like substitutions should have been made. they used all 3 and looked more dangerous after it. might be a new efl directive that only away clubs are allowed to make em. |

Chester, languishing in the lower reaches of the National League & with a similar population to Hyndburn, played Woking yesterday - a southern team below them in the league - attendance 1770! I find it pathetic that, even with the combination of factors I stated earlier, we can't even scrape a 2000 gate with 3 games left & on the brink of a play-off spot. Makes you wonder if we'd get any more fans even if we did get promotion? |

Plus, Burnley didn't play on Easter Monday. As for Blackburn, I know many Rovers fans who have given up going to matches since their recent demise. As a boy, I first went to see Stanley at Peel Park with my Grandad in 1958, so I'm fully aware of the factors you mention and yes, I am also one of those who came back. Andy Holt & John Coleman must be wondering what, if anything, they can do to convince more fans to come? The teams on fire, admission prices reduced - and we still can't even match attendances at non-league games. I really expected we'd hit 2000 on Easter Monday after our recent run so, sorry! If you feel under 1600 home fans is acceptable in our current position, I can only disagree. |

Re: Crawley - a must win game at the Theatre of Wham
think both cashy and lord stiffupperlip both make valid points about our gates or lack of em. crawley at home wasn,t really a game a neutral could really get excited about and blackburn had a real 6 pointer against bristol city the same day. it,s been gone on about for as long as i can remember about how to increase the attendance at the wham. i can,t think of any other way we can. people just ain,t interested. they have their own clubs to support now. lads that went to stanley in 62 are grandads now and we,ve lost 2 generations of potential support. any answers let everyone know.
|
Re: Crawley - a must win game at the Theatre of Wham
I did suggest during E.W.s tenure, that to me the only way to build on gates would be to constantly work on the schools with the very young, if yeh can snare some of those then we got a chance. every club gets increased attendances when they are up at the top, but decreased when the aint. that was my 2 pennorth.

Re: Crawley - a must win game at the Theatre of Wham
Funnily enough I went to Blackburn as soon as the final whistle blew at the Theatre of Wham. Met some Bristol fan mates in Wetherspoons there.
It was the very first time I'd been to Blackburn. In fact, I mentioned this to some blokes outside the pub who were attempting to engage me with some small talk about the indian takeaway opposite. "Oh where are you from then?" asked one. When I told them Accrington they seemed highly amused - like they were expecting me to have made a pilgrimage from deepest Kent or something. I thought it was normal to hate Burnley and Blackburn and want nowt to do with them? I was always told it was in my DNA and that was that. Did seasoned Accy fans really desert to these places? That's shocking. |

I'm a hypocrite anyway as I should have refused to support another. I was in the womb in 62 and, therefore, still old enough to have formed an undying allegiance to my local team!
For some bizarre reason my Dad took me (and my bruv) to Burnley v Carlisle in the early 70s. No idea why since he despised Burnley. I can only assume it was to show us what purgatory looked like - a plan nearly scuppered when we won the lucky programme draw (courtesy of our number being drawn by Paul Fletcher as memory serves). Anyway, I've always hated Burnley - but would be hard pressed as to explain why. |
Re: Crawley - a must win game at the Theatre of Wham
A technical point here - Stanley didn't disappear in 1962. They carried on playing at Peel Park in the Lancs Combination and a few diehards like me and Chimer carried on watching 'em!
|
Re: Crawley - a must win game at the Theatre of Wham
If Stanley tipped up now I cant imagine supporting another club. Twould be hard on my youngest though as he'd be begging to go somewhere ... probably end up at Shawbridge if anywhere
