Peter Murphy
 

The Red Darreners have not contributed to the excellent debates on the site for some time but we both feel a duty to formally instigate a Peter Murphy thread.
We firstly want to wish Peter and his family all the very best that life can offer. As close observers of the fortunes of all the playing members of the Stanley family over recent years we can honestly say that Peter was probably our biggest favourite, An utterly wholehearted, loyal and committed player, at times we thought he almost single handedly dragged Stanley to draws and wins they sometimes ill deserved through sheer force of will and personality.
Though we were heartbroken when he joined Wycombe, we followed his progress there and noted with unlimited glee the impact he made there. His reputation there is confirmed by the many warm comments offered by the Adams Park faithful in the wake of his retirement.
We were happy when he came back north and joined Morecambe but fate has played a ghastly and loaded hand in terms of injuries even a huge-hearted soul such as Peter has found it tough to overcome. We feel he would have been a fantastic captain and leader of any team had fate not intervened so cruelly.
Every Stanley fan will have their own Murphy memory - the two that come to my mind were the last gasp winner at Morecambe (2013?) and the wonderful first goal in the legendary 2-2 home draw against Portsmouth, a game which epitomised his will to ensure we didn't lose.
I'm sure there are many quiet souls who observe the musings on this site who would really like to pay a tribute to Peter and I hope these thoughts encourage them so to do.
If you pick this up Peter we wish you every happiness and success in the next phase of your life. And we would also offer heartfelt and humble thanks for the very many moments of happiness you have given us over the years. Cheers mate!

known Peter for a while now and can honestly say hes the most honest and genuine footballer i have ever met.
Wish him all the best in the future and hopefully stays involved in the game in some capacity,born winner and knowledgeable about the game,top lad,great footballer !!

Not sure if Peter has anything planned but I'd like to see us offer him a coaching with the younger lads if possible...

If he can get half of his passion and enthusiasm into the kids, We won't go far wrong!

If doctors told him to retire with league football no chance he'll be able to play non league where it's more physical

I find non league to be less physical, certainly less demanding on players in terms of physical fitness.

Referees generally a lot better, the days of allowing bad challenges have long gone.

A certain Mike Marsh was told to retire from professional football, received his insurance pay out and went on to win league titles with Kidderminster, Boston and us
