Yeovil

Had hoped to get up to Accy on Saturday but for various reasons it didn't happen. Instead ended up watching Luton 8 Yeovil 2. Yeovil weren't bad going forward and but for the Luton keeper could have had 5 or 6 but there defence was truly awful and Luton could / should have been in double figures. They looked better when they changed one of the centre backs at half time but not much. I think Stanley's defence is probably strong enough to deal with their attacking threat whilst any pace through the middle will terrify their back four. Just hope I don't end up eating my words but difficult to see Yeovil turning that round in a week or maybe even a season.

Trust your right, Lost, but I suspect Yeovil players will have given themselves a good talking to and will be desperate to make amends.
It'll need a good ref on Saturday, as there's likely to be some over-eager challenges early on.

Re: Yeovil

Yeovil looked all out of sorts. It looked like they had picked 11 strangers of the street at times. I hope they don't recover until we have beaten them. I do think a savage beating like that on opening day will take some recovering from. I feel for the team as we know they are better than that. I would like to have seen their pre season games.

Stanley didn't give us a refund and pay my fuel bill after I watched them get smashed by Peterborough 8-2 back in 2007/08.

One of the worst drives home on a Tuesday night as well, it poured down heavily and some of the roads were closed.

saturday is a much bigger day for yeovil than for us. their fans will expect a hundred per cent improvment on the luton game. if this does not happen which i hope it won,t then the first manager casualty of the season might not be far away.

Anyone who thinks this will be a foregone conclusion after Yeovil's massacre at Luton is a fool.
I'm sure Coley & the team won't be taking anything for granted.
For those with short memories, remember Newport away at the end of last season!

Re: Yeovil

It just seems that Yeovil are one of the bogey teams we can't seem beat when needed. Today the team selection was a puzzle unless as others have said there is a bug in the camp affecting players. To sub in the 89th minute when chasing a game is poor. Unless it is for injury. But we must concentrate on West Brom. It just sticks in the throat that we lost to a team who leaked 8 goals against Luton last week. When the reports of the second half have been printed, We by all accounts dominated without actually scoring. Coley has to look at this very seriously and quickly. I hope the lure of the West Brom Game did not distract the team. A lot to think about.

Both Richards-Everton & Jorgensen were on the bench, so they must have been fit to play?
Will await the match reports with interest, but was scratching my head when I saw the team selection today.
According to the BBC sports app, Forbes was subbed at half time due to an injury.

Re: Yeovil

Despite finding a good pub to eat afore the game, Mrs Exile and me are getting to dislike trips to Yeovil.
Professor Coleman's summary was, as often the case, spot on.
The only consistent feature of the game was the utter inconsistency of the ref, who was poor for 90 minutes. At one point he penalised The Don for taking a throw-in ten, maybe fifteen yards further up than where the ball went out (which was virtually on the half way line). He gave the throw to Yeovil. Some free kicks be taken two yards further back. And yet the free kick that gave Yeovil their first goal was from an alleged foul right next to their corner flag, but he allowed their keeper to take it almost level with the 18 yard box.
Maybe Stanley's problem was scoring first early. It was at that time when the game hadn't really settled, and it was as if the Men in Red thought their work was done, so they sat back only to let Yeovil run them ragged for 30 minutes. They were first to every ball and were knocking Stanley's players off the ball for fun. That first half spell was as bad as I've seen Stanley teams play for a while. Ooh, at least for a few months.
Invidious to pick out individuals for criticism as, in the second half, everyone bucked their ideas up and turned the game around.
Biggest plus point was the developing rapport between Billy Kee and Kayden Jackson - watch Stanley's second goal for example. Jackson also took the first really well; it was far from, as the BBC website claimed, "a tap in". He has that poacher's way about him.
Hardly recognised the new, lithe CB - Mark Hughes must have shed a stone and was running around like a young buck.
And finally, great performance from Reagan Oz Ogle. He had a very tricky winger to deal with and, after a few goes, really got to grips with him. He contributed a lot to the game and is worth his place for his throw-ins alone.
Not that the others not mentioned played badly in the second half.
Talking to a neutral after the game we agreed a draw would have been a fair result. But, as we all know, life and football ain't fair.
First Objective: Survival.

I don't believe he is saying that.
I may be wrong but I read it that Lord Didders is suggesting that if Beckles and Everton had played as CBs, and the Great Dane was in goal....Stanley COULD have a better defence.

Revived Red 12-08-2017 20:21

Re: Yeovil

As always, a very fair summary from Exile. The first half performance really was disappointing. On the rare occasions that a Stanley player ran and sought space, none of the other players seemed to notice. A disappointing performance from Conneely who seemed slow in thought and action.

I know that Chapman has his critics and was probably at fault for the 3rd Yeovil goal (difficult to see from our vantage point), but he did make at least 3 fantastic saves.

I was very impressed by Ogle's performance in the 2nd half. But again we had a mystery substitution by Coley. I cannot understand bringing on an attacker in the 88th minute when trying to salvage a point - or win 3 points. That really is far too late.

After all the optimism & euphoria of the last few weeks, we crashed back to earth with a bump today.
What is it with Stanley and whipping boys???????
It seems we have no trouble matching, or even beating, higher league opposition.
But put us up against the league's fall-guys & we freeze faster than an ice-pop.
Last season, within sight of the play-offs, we got stuffed at rock-bottom Newport - goodbye promotion!
Today it was Yeovil's turn who, despite leaking eight goals last week, managed to defy the odds & make us look average at best.
The irony is, we shouldn't be too surprised, we've all read this script before.

Most goals have an element of fortune about them but, at the time, their first goal seemed more inevitable than fortunate. The "highlights" don't show the disarray that Stanley were in at the time.
Yeovil are a good side. If anyone was 'fortunate' it was Luton on the opening day.
Still think Stanley's second goal will take some beating as a lesson in how to attack from your own penalty box. A delight to behold.
