Wycombe Match
Thought I'd kick-off early with this thread as there appears to be a lot of comment regarding 'The Beast' now appearing on the Newport thread.
I'm confident after Saturday's disappointment that Coley will have our lads motivated for this game. Hopefully, Tuesday night's will be the game when all our shots are on target & those that aren't, hit the bar & deflect into the net for a change. Naturally, everyone's talking about the return of our nemesis Akinfenwa, aka - 'The Beast'. However, perhaps we'd be better off concentrating on Craig Mackail-Smith, who scored an 11 minute hat-trick for them last Saturday against Crawley. Naturally, they're cock-a-hoop after thrashing Crawley 4-0, but only the week before were beaten 2-1 - at Morecambe!!!!!!!! Come on you Reds - don't let the Shrimps get one over on us. |
Re: Wycombe Match
Hope yer right mate, i thought after Guisley they woulda been motivated against Newport? we will need a bit more than motivation to shackle the beast tonight i think.

Re: Wycombe Match
Apparently we have had food stolen in one of these latest raids, so a case of pies might not be an option.
I'm really looking forward to watching him again - even though it will be with a sense of dread. I like his approach to the game and he's certainly unique! I'm not sure Big Ben will get the better of him - not sure anyone can - even when he's quiet it just needs the right ball delivered to him in the box and we could be in trouble. Best to cut his supply lines and keep it down the other end if we can. I take it Seamus is out? Anyone going to place bets on tonight's team? I'm going with Nolan in for Johnson, everyone else as per saturday. Would be happy to see Wilks start for a change. Would probably settle for a point truth be told. |
Re: Wycombe Match
I always look forward to seeing him,a real class act i think,

Re: Wycombe Match
Well deserved 3 Pts, thought Wycombes keeper kept the score down with some good saves,Stanley kept at em after scoring, unlike the Newport game, well done Stanley, thought Everton kept the beast pretty quiet, grateful fer that, good all round team performance.:):):):)

Re: Wycombe Match
Really good 1st half, solid at the back in the second.
The look of competent promotion contenders. Scotty Brown had a much better game but the back 3 were joint MOTM. |
Re: Wycombe Match
My man of the match goes to Coleman. The change of formation for this specific physical game seem to inspire every member of the team. It was great not to see the beast have a hearty meal out of us. Apart from a couple of scares when the defence switched off they defended outstanding. Was nice seeing kee's passing in the number 10 role. Mcconville's tail is up and he did a good job at wing back. Well done the whole team and a well deserved victory.

Re: Wycombe Match
So, who was this 'beast' we were all worried about??:D
Well played lads - cool, calm & confident performance, roll on Exeter! |
Re: Wycombe Match
'Twas an excellent tactical display and a fully deserved win tonight.:mosher::theband:
John and Jimmy setting up the 'Back Three' with Rawson coming in was a masterstroke. Akinfenwa just couldn't make up his mind about who was supposed to be marking him!:s_cry: I agree that the 'Back Three' deserved joint MOM awards. Big Ben won the high balls, Rawson won everything else and Hughes did his usual 'Mr Cool' job of tidying up any loose bits! Wing backs Janoi and Sean Mac played really well too. Sean played a real Captain's role and he was running up and down even harder in the last twenty minutes than he had earlier! Playing Billy in mid-field was another master stroke. Like all the Stanley players he ran his socks off and won a lot of ball and constantly disrupted their play. Scott Brown and young Johnson also worked hard and linked well in their roles. The two young lads up front must have run miles tonight not only when attacking but when pressing their full backs when they were expecting time on the ball. It was a shame one of the two lads up front didn't get a goal because they deserved to. When Meki came on he too looked very lively. We outplayed and out foxed them in every way tonight and they were reduced to having to do a lot of niggly 'cheating' fouls to stop us running riot in the second half. A really cracking performance from all of the players but from the management too.:mosher: The Clayton End also played their part tonight and urged the boys on to a great win. We should all sleep well tonight!:theband: ON STANLEY ON:wave8::signbeer::drink: WITH JIMMY AND JOHN:theband::mosher::mosher::mosher: Forgot to mention Chapman who did his stuff when needed tonight. He will be made up with another clean sheet. He just did a couple of dodgy kicks late on after he changed his right boot for his shiny black right footed 'Sunday Best' shoe! |
Re: Wycombe Match
A vital 3 points moves us to within 1 point of top spot.
After the nervous displays against Guiseley & Newport, tonight's performance was altogether more disciplined. At no point did we panic, despite it taking 70 minutes before we broke a resolute Wycombe, the team showed belief in their game plan & incredible patience. Thankfully, the 'Beast' barely featured, thanks mainly to 'Big Ben's' superb defending. Credit to our defence for another clean sheet. Thought the 'Don' had another incredible game, solid in defence & always a threat going forward. Thought Rawson made a big difference at the back. Still prefer Nolan in midfield to Johnson. Last but not least - well done Hughesie! The scourge of Wycombe - Again! |
Re: Wycombe Match
A very enjoyable match tonight, as others have said the back three did an ace job in keeping akinfenwa under control, hope J. C. is OK he appeared to fall down just before Micky came on, 4 points clear in third is a wonderful feeling
|
Re: Wycombe Match
Superb TEAM display. Well done LADS

Re: Wycombe Match
Thanks for the reports everyone, sounds like we were pretty much in control and put our cup blues behind us. Good to see fat man was put in his place, one point behind the leaders at this stage, take that any day of the week, well done you red men.

Re: Wycombe Match
Good onya STANLEY...When the FT whistle went at around 10.30 AM (nz time) I was estatic. That scoreline , well just the fact we won, turned a hot dreary work day into a breeze. On STANLEY on.
|
Re: Wycombe Match
nice to see stanley not being bullied out of the game for once against physical opponents. looked better going forward too with billy playing a bit deaper. really exciting game for me. don,t want to pick a man of the match as they all were. 4 points against sides we do not usually do well against is fine by me. what happened to coley, does anyone know.
|
Re: Wycombe Match
Whole team looked fresh and rejuvenated last night.
It was great to see Billy get a bit of time on the ball and not used as battering ram. Thought Donacien really looked the part at wing back. Well done Coley. |
Re: Wycombe Match
Thought we needed that last night, had a recent blip in performance lately, at least though we were still picking points up, in the past we didn't, hope its a sign of things to come.;)
|
Re: Wycombe Match
I think your right Cashy sign of things to come.
Just when I thought we had become a little bit predictable in our tactics, its hats off to Coley, Jimmy and John Doolan Totally changed our formation and while it took twenty minutes to settle down what a breath of fresh air. I think it totally bamboozled Gareth Ainsworth and any on watching scouts making notes for future games. A very very clever move The good thing is now going into games the opposition will not know how we are going to set up and play But the key to any set up is our passing game and was spot on last night I think last night was a statement to the league Its been a tough week and after Saturday we have a 10 day game break |

Cheers Mike, twas good to see again.:)

Re: Wycombe Match
3-4-3 is a very effective formation if you have good defenders and in our back 3 last night we have possibly the best 3 defenders in league 2, we had to find a place for Rawson hardly put a foot wrong and in central midfield young Johnson played in Connelly's role in the hole very well. Best pressing performance from a Stanley side in a while and if we can reproduce that side of our game constantly we will be very hard to beat.

Re: Wycombe Match
It was always going to be a tough match, I think Mark Hughes should have been MOM. we played quite well. We actually won a few more second balls. However we do still seem to have a communication problem. we don't seem to look up often enough and spread the ball wide. when we did we were dangerous. Neither wilks or Jackson had a great night last night. We know how they can be but they were well marshalled. McCloud needs more games to get the best from him. I don't know what has happened to Edwards from Hull as he to needs more games. I think we do need to rotate players to keep them fresh. we have all the ingredients of a promotion team. We are struggling at times but we pick a point at least. That is the sign of a team on the up. we should encourage everyone we know to get behind the team. we will go up this time.

'Neither wilks or Jackson had a great night last night.'
I thought they were a handful in the first half. Pressing and looking dangerous. Never gave their defence peace. Jackson's pace always a danger. Wilks tired in 2nd half but he'll only get stronger with more games. 'I think we do need to rotate players to keep them fresh.' I think Edwards is passed his use by date by now. |

Re: Wycombe Match
Wilks has not shown enough to displace either Kee, Jackson, so Leeds probably will move him on
|
Re: Wycombe Match
He does possess the raw materials but needs a run of at least 10 games, we cant give him that. If he's only going to get sub spots then he'd be better served at Elland Road getting that.
I'm not convinced he's going to the top but he'll only get better with games, and as he fills out a bit more as well. If he doesnt make it I wouldnt be surprised to see Coley resurrect his career in 3 or 4 years |
Re: Wycombe Match
Hopefully Wilks will play the next few games and he'll be allowed to stay but I'd be surprised. Reckon he will go to another div 2 team if not getting a game and up a division if he does!
Any chance of keeping Rawson, Thorniley, Johnson who are also contracted to the start of Jan? Keeping Rawson plus one other would be good news. I always thought Coley would be seen as a safe pair of hands to manage loan players from better clubs, but if we've benched most of this year's intake then clubs might be reassessing? Shame it's not a 15-a-side game. |
