Let's Have a Spireites Thread
2-0 up and not yet half-time.
Chesterfield have 5 debutants. With luck they've not gelled yet! |
Re: Let's Have a Spireites Thread
4-zip...and what a nice way to end my annual holidays (part 1). Thanks STANLEY. :):):):)

Re: Let's Have a Spireites Thread
To be honest Chesterfield were never in it, Sean Mac scored a cracking second goal, if that had been in premiership, yeh would never have heard the last of it, There signing of the season scored the third, just after half time.:D and at the death spilt one and super Billy Kee mopped up, after our third though we sat back, luckily they were very poor,The ref was truly shocking, good job we played well.Diving all 90 mins was chesterfields ploy and he was too dense to see it.
|
Re: Let's Have a Spireites Thread
Chesterfield were rubbish. We played solidly enough. Pressed well when we lost possession.
Big Ben my MOTM. Johnson still doesn't impress me. Their no 41 caused him problems. but thought he had a better second half. McCleod looked good - unlucky not to score. Really crap ref. |
Re: Let's Have a Spireites Thread
I thought the ref did spoil the match and the liners decisions were questionable. I rarely comment on liners calls as I can't have the same view as they have. Today though there were some puzzling decisions which would require a trip to specsavers. It is always bad when poor officials spoil a game. I do think the FA should take a closer look at officials training programme. There should not be such a disparity in the quality of refereeing.

Re: Let's Have a Spireites Thread
Chesterfield came to play in a similar passing way to Stanley which suites us and we where to good for them and there goalkeeper was like Chapman at the start of the season and not now. Cracking first half goals. Agree with cashman we sat back in second half lucky not to concede. honourable mentions for Nolan did well getting about midfield, Sean who was wonderful for 20 minutes when he scored goal, kayden is becoming a handful for opposition as well. Although I am pleased overall with everyone in team today (admittedly Johnson got skinned abit but Hines was a good winger).

Re: Let's Have a Spireites Thread
Perhaps uncharitable to describe the Spirerites as crap.
In fact, they played their best football after going 3-0 down & began to dominate possession with some slick passing. If it wasn't for two mistakes from their goalkeeper & a couple of good saves from Chapman, the scoreline may not have been so flattering. Johnson was ineffective in the first half, being repeatedly skinned by their left-winger. I half expected Coleman to switch the Don to right-back 2nd half to cope with the threat. But enough charity in victory - a convincing win from our boys today. Up to 4th spot with a game in hand over 3rd placed Coventry, could put us back in an automatic promotion spot. Happy days indeed! |

Re: Let's Have a Spireites Thread
They were as bad a side as Ive seen up yon since Stockport County

They'd just witnessed their team being humiliated. Funny how a 4 - 0 victory can bring out the rose tinted specs. Personally, I've no time for fans who love to sneer at the opposition. Yes, Chesterfield are on their uppers & looking into the abyss of non-league, but they still brought a small army of fans who still love their club & are prepared to follow a losing cause. Did we attain 70% possession? Did we have 30 shots on target? Let's look at the actual FACTS. Possession - Stanley 51%. Chesterfield 49% Shots - Stanley 10. Chesterfield 9 On Target - Stanley 6. Chesterfield 5 Corners - Stanley 6 Chesterfield 4 Not quite the one-horse race some people witnessed. As for sitting back on a 3-0 lead - that's completely unfair. Yes, lets celebrate our victory, but is it necessary to stick the knife in? |
Re: Let's Have a Spireites Thread
Sorry sitting back on a 3-0 lead is exactly what we did, even J.C. said as much in the video.after the third and we did is how chesterfield upped their STATS, fact.
|
Re: Let's Have a Spireites Thread
Chesterfield were weakest side at Wham yet. Game over after 47 mins- how often do we say that? Stats very misleading.

Re: Let's Have a Spireites Thread

Either Chesterfield had 49% possession - or they didn't! Either we had 6 shots on target to their 5 - or did we? Yes! We deserved to win the game, but we were gifted - & I do mean gifted, 2 goals by their goalkeeper. They came close to scoring a couple of times which, but for Chapman, could have gone in. On another day their goalie could have played a blinder, instead of having a nightmare. The difference between winning & losing can be wafer thin. Chesterfield may well be a poor side, but you've got to give them credit for not giving up, even after going 3-0 down, they still kept battling. They brought 341 fans with them yesterday to swell our coffers. Should we show them some respect, or are we going to crow about their 4-0 thrashing, like that cocky idiot from Lincoln who came on our forum recently & did exactly the same to us? There's a motto - 'Humility in victory - defiance in defeat! We'd all do well to follow it. |
Re: Let's Have a Spireites Thread
Exile and Monkey - yes, I thought the refs crapness was that he was too fussy.
Lord Stiff - I kind of agree with where you are going i.e., that 4-0 flattered us, but stats can still be facts and misleading. If their possession was largely non threatening passing in the own half when we were already 3-0 up, and their shots on target were lame long range shots born of frustration, that's going to show up in stats the same as a team cutting the opposition to ribbons when they have the ball. The fact their goalie gifted us two goals is no different than, say, mistakes in their defence. Or needlessly losing possession in midfield. It's still part of the overall team performance. |
Re: Let's Have a Spireites Thread
Be interesting to see the stats after 47 mins- when we switched off. I would imagine they present a different perspective on the game.
If I were a Spireite I would not take a great deal of comfort in the performance or consider it the fairly even contest the stats over 90mins suggest. Chesterfield look a shadow of the team we played in September when they were unfortunate to loose with 10 men. |
Re: Let's Have a Spireites Thread
Quote:
However, let's assume you are correct & that we dominated the game for the first 45 minutes - by say 60/40% in our favour. To achieve a 51/49% after 90 minutes means Chesterfield had to literally reverse that ratio & achieve almost 60% possession for the entire 2nd half. Do you believe that actually happened? Having read some posts on the Spirerites forum, I know they are hurting after their humiliation & already feel doomed to relegation. Let's not rub salt in an open wound by describing them as 'rubbish, crap, the worst team seen at the Wham'. Saturday was simply a day when everything went right for us, and everything went wrong for them. Let's give all our opponents the respect they deserve, whether they're bottom of the league or top. At the end of the day, we're all brothers-in-arms just trying to survive. One day - God forbid! We may be the one's in the pit of despair. |
Re: Let's Have a Spireites Thread
In fairness, none of us (to my knowledge) have been on their forum saying they were crap? That would be disrespectful.
Judging by the "facts" they are second bottom with the worst goal difference. They are a poor team and I saw nothing at all to suggest they will turn it around. |
Re: Let's Have a Spireites Thread
Speaking to a couple of spirite fans they were saying they were crap.

Re: Let's Have a Spireites Thread
Not dissin the Spirites- I have a soft spot for them and want them to stay up.
IMHO Saturday's display was the worst I've seen this season so far- there has to be one. |

Re: Let's Have a Spireites Thread
Stanley played really well and with confidence. When this happens a team seem to get the 'lucky breaks' too.... For example, in the two gifts from their keeper.
When a team loses confidence their play becomes erratic, mistakes creep in and the 'luck' seems to disappear too. This can be summed up as 'Relegation Form'. To their credit Chestefield didn't resort to unfair tactics, as some teams would, and they continued to try to play football in the right way and they did improve a bit in the second half. We played well, scored a couple of great goals and had a 'bit of luck' with two more! Hence a 4 - 0 victory! Well played Stanley! The referee Sarginson was once again just awful. Had we lost we would be giving him even far more stick! |
Re: Let's Have a Spireites Thread
League 2 football has always been a topsy-turvy affair.
We all know from bitter experience that the bottom club can defy the odds & beat one of the league leaders on any given day. In general, most teams in our league seem fairly evenly matched & the difference between success or failure can often be a baffling mystery. Recently, Port Vale 'thrashed' runaway league leaders Luton 4-0! - wonder if the Vale fans described Luton as crap? Of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinion about our opponents. Just feel some of the comments made about Chesterfield were unnecessary & a tad unfair, after considering the actual game stats. Yes, we deserved to win the game, but we had a good deal of luck on our side, while they had none. |
Re: Let's Have a Spireites Thread
Lord Stiff - Not an unreasonable point of view . In fact, your line of argument is a nice one. In this day and age it's usually the offended who decides whether there has been any offence (gawd help us). I bet there wouldn't be many Chesterfield fans irate if they read the comments here mind.
Mab - I've never been a fan of Scotty Brown but I think he's done really well of late. |

Re: Let's Have a Spireites Thread
If it's any consolation to Chesterfield, there was just a question on Madtermind: "which club has the nickname the spireites"? And the bloke got it right.
Hope that cheered any of their watching fans up a bit. |
Re: Let's Have a Spireites Thread
For all those who described Chesterfield as the worst team seen at the Wham.
For those who thought that 49% possession an irrelevance. Who said they were rubbish, crap, doomed to relegation. For those who thought me mad for praising their 'never-say-die' attitude. Ladies & Gentlemen, I give you - CHESTERFIELD 2 - LUTON 0 Ho, ho, ho! Who has the last laugh now? :mosher: |
Re: Let's Have a Spireites Thread
Now then Lord Stiff, I understand how sweet must be the feeling of vindication, but is this not a very brave post indeed?
What if it was just a one off, and they fall apart again ? You'll have to change your identity and move to another town - such will be the ridicule you might face. |
Re: Let's Have a Spireites Thread
Twas I who said they were the worst team I had seen since Stockport (2011). They were. I couldnt give a monkeys if it was a one off (it wasnt). Neither could I give a monkeys if anyone is offended by my opinion.
Fans the length and breadth of our fine Island have delighted in pointing out our pishpoorosity for decades. They have also revelled in the scorn of our tinpottery, and still do to this very day. Do I take offence at their disdain for my club? No I do not. However, I am dismayed occasionally that they dont offer mitigation for our failings. We have truly climbed the abyss over the last 47 years. For 12 years (say it again Sam) we have, by a distance and without a shadow of doubt, been the poorest relation amongst the fabled 92. Yet they still deem it necessary to highlight our foibles. I still dont take offence. By contrast, only 40 moons past since the Ites from the Spire lifted the League 2 Crown in front of another full house at their brand new £10m flat packed arena. Only 46 or so moons past since they emptied their sack of gold and promptly snared The Snake, who then gave a glimpse of that gold to Leam and Boco ... Treasure chests ahoy, Snake charmed, and packed house after packed house. Did they cast a backward glance at doddery old Stanley, limping along and unable to heat his one bedroomed flat? Did they heck as like. They're not unique neither. The footballing world oohed and aahed when Kettle torpedoed our promotion push 2 years ago. A day later twas but a cached cookie. No, the world cares not for us and I care not for it. The bigger the club the more I shall delight in my gentle observations of how good they were not |
Re: Let's Have a Spireites Thread
Even a stopped clock..
|
Re: Let's Have a Spireites Thread
Some people just don't understand League 2 football.
After the derision heaped on the Spirerites last week by some who became intoxicated by their 4-0 defeat, it was certain that they would defy all the odds to beat runaway leaders Luton. No mean feat! - and something we failed to accomplish when we faced the Hatters at home. We shall see at the end of the season whether those who predicted certain relegation for Chesterfield were right or wrong. I have a feeling that some may have egg on their face if the latter proves correct. It's a shame those who are quickest at jumping to conclusions, never have the grace to admit they might just be wrong. |

Re: Let's Have a Spireites Thread
I just don't get why any of our fans would take such umbrage on Chesterfield's behalf? A previously held affiliation to them maybe, who knows.
Good on 'em for beating Luton yesterday, nice to see the Hatters being taken down a peg or two (or is that too disparaging a remark about one of our fellow teams?!) We need to not bother so much about how other fans are feeling, support our lads & enjoy our own season - after all, we're not running a support group for those whose nose gets put out of joint at times, COYR! |
Re: Let's Have a Spireites Thread
Sorry to disappoint AccyMad, but I have no affiliation to the Spirerites.
Nobody rejoiced more than I did after our 4-0 victory. Call me an old softie, but when strugglers turn up & get a damn good thrashing, my first instinct is to feel some sympathy for their supporters. Those like us, who travel in hope only to return home crushed. I was just trying to be objective & saw the game in a different light to those who were quick to deride Chesterfield as rubbish. Despite the result, I still feel that the game wasn't as one sided as some suggested, given the stats & their gift of 2 goals. My big mistake was to describe some of the more scornful remarks as 'uncharitable'. Apparently, I'm now a closet Spirerite. If expressing an honest opinion is 'taking umbrage' on behalf of the opposition, then so be it. However, as soon as the club shop start stocking 'Stanley Rose-Tinted Specs', I promise to buy some. :hothothot |
Re: Let's Have a Spireites Thread
Ah, see that's maybe where you're going wrong Lord S - most of us are already in possession of such glasses & have been for years, they're what keep us sane & hopeful :)
