Re: Stevenage Match Thread
Another vital 3 points. Stevenage seemed to score there goals with ease first half (they are a better passing side than in Westley era). Are leaders bought us back into it (excellent mcconville free kick and kee). In truth either side had chances to score again but this year we seem to be mainly coming out on top in these situations. Jimmy dunne looked the part at the back. His pace helping Hughes out although I think Richards-everton is abit unlucky to be rested. We looked better after the substitution Sousa causing problems. Johnson is a better right back than right midfield. Kayden was a threat all afternoon if he was a better finisher he would be playing at a higher level. Other players all performed as have come to expect. Scott brown I find at times concerning but other times very effective! Vital 2 weeks ahead hopefully churning out more 3 point results!

Re: Stevenage Match Thread
Great result today, but we cannot keep giving side 2 start (gifts) Kayden i thought deserved his MoM, though when he was clean through, never looked like scoring, Thought Rogers was well short of match practice, even though i rate him, how he was started and Everton on the bench defies logic to all who stand around me. Hope for better on Tuesday. Also thought Satanage were still under Westly, as they were pigging ANIMALS.

Re: Stevenage Match Thread
YET ANOTHER AMAZING COMEBACK BY THE STANLEY BOYS.:mosher::mosher::mosher:
BUT IT IS NOT GOOD FOR THE HEALTH OF THE STANLEY FANS:eek::help::w00t::idunno::s_boom: It was indeed a wonderful comeback to get the three points and the team showed a lot of character in doing so. Overall though it wasn't a great playing performance with the exception of Kayden Jackson who was just ELECTRIC today! His dynamic running, pace, skill and determination were a joy to see and his performance only lacked his name on the score sheet. Defo MOM for me today.:mosher::jimbo: Billy worked hard as usual against their big and strong No 4 and deserved to have his name on the score sheet.:jimbo: Sean scored the important goal on the stroke of half time which was the real turning point of the match! Once again it was Kayden who won the free kick in a perfect position for Sean to stroke it in with his right foot. It was right in front of us in the Clayton End and Sean found a 12 inch square superbly in the top right hand corner of the goal. No keeper could have saved that one! I am looking forward to seeing that one on the TV tonight! Had it been scored by a current Man City player it would be hailed as a wonder goal and Sean would be worth MILLIONS!:wave8: In the first half although we didn't play well we did make plenty of scoring chances, with balls across the face of the goal just needing one of our lads to be in the right position. In the meantime we managed to let Stevenage score two goals the first of which was down to very poor defending on our part and the second which was simply laid on a plate for them by stupidly trying to walk the ball out of defence just one time too many!:dflam: Our second half pressure eventually paid off with the result finally going our way :eek::eek:Sean played a Captain's role in the second half and Dunne played very strongly at the back in the second half particularly. Hughes was having another poor match until the last fifteen minutes when he finally made his passes count and did some timely interceptions. I think it also made a difference when Sousa came on as he too was threat and his ball skills were delight to see and it also helped us to keep the pressure on their defence. :jimbo::mosher: I couldn't understand the 'resting' of Everton-Richards though and to me I could see a partnership between him and Dunne being worth trying out. Anyway........Three very important and hard earned points in the end and another three on Tuesday could see us right up their at the haed of the chase for promotion. ON STANLEY ON:theband::jimbo::jimbo::jimbo: KEEP THE FAITH:wave8::wave8::signbeer::drink: PS it's my 66th birthday today and my family are taking me out for a meal. The Beer and Wine will certainly taste good after the WIN TODAY! PPS I still think that I am only NINETEEN! |
Re: Stevenage Match Thread
Another 3 points but could easily have been 0 Coley has got to sort his back 4 out we looked shambolic in the opening 15 minutes at the back why Callum was on the wing who knows far bettered 2nd half at full back but credit were it's due we dug in for the 3 points sets us up for a massive game Tuesday maybe time for Conneely,s comeback we miss his calming influence in the middle.

Re: Stevenage Match Thread
A few quick thoughts.....
1. Callum Johnson is showing signs of being a good footballer. I have misjudged the lad. 2. Jackson had a great game 3. Jimmy Dunne looked good 4. Sousa looked good (first time I’ve seen him) 5. I would love to know what the score would have been with Big Ven in the side after 40 mins. We would not have been 2-0 down that much I’m sure of 6. Chapman looked to have made a very good and very important save when we were 2-2 |
Re: Stevenage Match Thread
They say you should always expect the unexpected!
Don't think anyone expected the always dependable Richards-Everton would be the one dropped to make way for Harvey Rodgers. For 45 minutes, I for one thought Mr. Coleman had made a serious error of judgement, so poor was our performance. Stevenage coasted into another 2-0 lead without breaking sweat. Fast, slick & first to every ball, they passed their way through our midfield with ease. Our normal passing game went out the window, reduced to hoofing panicky balls out of defence. The cries of 'Rubbish!' & other encouragements such as 'For f***s sake, get a grip!', echoed from the Clayton End. 'God! Do we need a goal before half-time' I suggested in desperation to my companion on 45 minutes. Step up Captain Courageous - Sean McConville, in the 48th minute to give us some hope. A post-mortem was conducted on the terraces at half time & it was generally agreed by all that our promotion hopes were as good as dead. What we needed was an injection of Jordan Clark & 3 spoonfuls of 'Big Ben'. Doctor Coleman must have felt the same as shortly after, he brought on the lively Sousa - although subbing Harvey Rodgers seemed illlogical as Dodger had improved from an uncertain start. Last season, we would have lost this game in humiliating fashion. But this squad is made of sterner stuff. The second half produced a battling, spirited performance that, once again, prised victory from the jaws of defeat. Stevenage were still dangerous & Chapman had to pull-off some superb saves to prevent further embarrasment. But this was groundhog day again, as Kee & McConville rescued the game & all of our hopes, which hang like a thread from one game to the next. For all our sakes, please Mr. Coleman, can we have a 5-0 win next time - if only to give maximum points to Kiwi John! |
Re: Stevenage Match Thread
Actually Lord Stiff, I didn’t think the first half was that bad. Loads of balls flashing across their six yard box. Jackson giving them all sorts of problems.
I did think either centre midfield or central defence was poor - particularly for their goals. |
Re: Stevenage Match Thread
Also, can anyone tell me why McCleod was preferred to Sousa? He seemed a different class. He could even stay on his feet without falling over his own laces.
|
Re: Stevenage Match Thread
Sousa to start on Tuesday - great ability to turn when receives the ball and beat the opposition. I made it that in his brief cameo that he beat defenders on 7 occasions - one of them twice in the space of a few seconds :D

Got to say that it was great to see us having an attacking threat down the right for a change..........
Thought that Harvey and Callum worked well together and posed a real threat!! Supermac and Janoi gave the usual left wing supply, but it was great to see us threaten down the right for a change.............. |

When they scored their 2nd goal on 38 minutes, we hadn't had a shot on target & they had dominated possession. The reaction, certainly from our section of the Clayton End after their 1st goal went in was -'It's been coming!' McConville's goal in the dying seconds of the first half + the addition of Sousa & a much improved performance in the 2nd half turned the game. Don't recall anyone saying 'We've not played that bad' at half time. Mind you! I did leave my hearing trumpet at home today. :jimbo: |
Re: Stevenage Match Thread
Well, for my two pennysworth, I'd like to thank the lads - I missed the game against Port Vale & for them to recreate the tension of that game for me was truly appreciated :) Couldn't have been scripted better against our nemusis!
That said, please don't do that again boys - my ticker won't take it :) |

Lord Stiff - have a look at Football Genius John Coleman’s post match interview. Seems he agrees with my assessment.
Therefore, I am also a football genius and you need to bring your ear trumpet next time. |
Re: Stevenage Match Thread
Watched the highlights.
Hughes to blame for the first? Their player completely unmarked. Second was clearly Nolan giving it away. Then their effort that hit the post looked like Hughes getting caught again? McConvilles goal was a beauty (actually looked better in real life I thought) and we were pretty much gifted the other two. (Noor Husain got a cracker for Notts County) |
Re: Stevenage Match Thread
Although Hughes does lack pace and makes errors(less ability than say dunne and Richards-everton) I think coley may see him as a calming influence and leader of the back line at the moment.

Re: Stevenage Match Thread
the difference yesterday was we had to make our 3 goals they had theirs gifted. this side ways passing thing just outside the box was always going to happen. not one of the get it upfield main standers but as my old man used to say pass it forwards or backwards in your own half but never sideways. funny why we did not pass sideways second half, lets hope we have learned for the future.

Think young Sousa deserves a bit more game time looked full of energy and played very well against some experienced defenders.

Having also watched the tv highlights, I must agree that their two goals were the result of individual blunders. However, whilst I'm not blaming Chapman, both goals were from low shots at the edge of the box & could have been saved by a keeper with quicker reactions. If Maxted is capable of making 2 outstanding saves from the penalty-spot, perhaps it's time we gave him an opportunity. I'm no football genius, but on Tuesday night I'd be re-instating Big Ben at centre back at the expense of Hughes. I'd also switch the Don to R.B. to feed Clark/Sousa, keeping Rodgers & Dunne to complete the back four. If Conneely is fit, I'd drop Brown, who despite his terrier qualities, is too easily dispossessed. We all know we can score goals but we've got to stop conceding them. |
Re: Stevenage Match Thread
only Swindon @ Wycombe conceded more than us in top 7. Defo need to tighten up a bit i reckon.
|
Re: Stevenage Match Thread
Although it cost me £40,I was sure I’d get it back after the game at a £1 a pint.
A lost never entered my head, even at 2-0 down Stevenages game plan of pressing the ball all over the pitch reaped rewards in the first half, helped by a tricky surface’they even stopped us playing out from the back. They simply started to run out of gas, this coupled with a Coley rocket, and the quality of Acci eventually come through. My only surprise is Kayden didn’t score as to press the ball, you have to hold an high line, which is playing right into his hands. On a more serious note, why was half of Acci in the supporters bar after the game ?,spoiled my planned celebration!!! |

A 'clean sheet' on Tuesday is our first priority. Then we only need to score one goal. Two would be great. We are always capable of scoring in any match home or away but we must try to strop gifting our opponents these silly give away presents.:mosher: |
Re: Stevenage Match Thread
What is the general feeling about Nolan?
|
Re: Stevenage Match Thread
Do not know the 'general' feeling is, but I rate him :)
As I see it, he does a lot of things that go under the radar and that people do not notice. His first season in the League, he will get better and stronger :) |
Re: Stevenage Match Thread
Steady is what i think of him.

Re: Stevenage Match Thread
Nolan is a young lad with all the attributes to be a good football league player. Makes bad choices sometimes like yesterday. He needs to be more positive and play the ball away from goal when in dangerous areas not towards it. Looks like he will need this season to improve. I hope Coley sticks with him.

Re: Stevenage Match Thread
Agree with crown grounder, though think he should not be played every week. at the moment think its too much.

Re: Stevenage Match Thread
Just read a great interview on the 'Fishy Site' with centre-back Jimmy Dunne.:mosher:
It was nice for him to express his gratitude to the support from the fans on Saturday.:jimbo: I thought that we in the Clayton End were a bit slow in getting going in the early part of the first half but ironically, it took us to go two goals behind before we started to sing fully and get behind the team. That was a clear expression of the fans total 'BELIEF' in the team to get back into the game. This was boosted tremendously by Sean's ABSOLUTELY PERFECT FREE KICK' for our first goal at such a critical time on the stroke of half time.:worthy::worthy: The Channel 5 coverage didn't do it justice IMHO. In discussion at half time with friends the feeling was that we could definitely still win the match and I do BELIEVE that the players felt the same way too.:hehetable Jimmy Dunne highlighted this in his interview and his appreciation of the support from the fans was wonderful to hear. Young Jimmy had a great game too. You could see what it meant to the players at the end as Billy and Sean and the others came up to the Clayton End to show their appreciation and admiration for our support. For me it was BRILLIANT to see the big FLAGS come out and I am sure that the players would love to see them more often. It reminded me of the best days of THE STANLEY ULTRAS a few years ago. I really do think that the show of the flags and colour added to the singing together make the difference of that of a "TWELFTH MAN" in the critical stages of a season. So come on all ULTRAS in the Clayton End........ FLAGS.......BANNERS.....and NOISE....to the MAXIMUM starting on Tuesday v Swindon.:wave8::s_gupjump:s_gupjump:wave8: ON STANLEY ON:mosher: UPWARDS AND ONWARDS:theband: |
