Wycombe Wanderers Match Thread

:) Man in the middle
Darren Drysdale returns to Adams Park for the first time since last February, when he officiated in a 2-1 loss to Carlisle.
In all this season he’s shown 133 yellow and six red cards in 42 matches so far. Team news Ainsworth expects Adebayo Akinfenwa, Luke O'Nien and Dominic Gape all to be available after being struck down by illness in recent days.
Anthony Stewart and Sido Jombati are close to a return while Tafari Moore and Curtis Thompson are available again, leaving only Dan Scarr as a confirmed absentee. League Two champions-elect Accrington Stanley are set to name the same starting eleven Chapman, Dunne, Hughes, Donacien, Clark, Brown, Jackson, McConville, Johnson, Conneely and Kee :) Some interesting facts :- Wycombe are winless in their last 10 league games against Accrington Stanley, drawing seven of those (L3).
Stanley have lost just one of their nine away games at Wycombe in the Football League (W4 D4).
Wycombe are on their joint-longest unbeaten run in League Two this season of eight games (W4 D4), last going longer without defeat in the competition in January 2017 (12 matches).
Stanley are on a 14-game unbeaten run in League Two (W12 D2), the longest ongoing run in the division. Indeed, they have lost just one of their last 19 in the competition (W16 D2). Prutton's prediction
What a story Accrington are, what a job John Coleman has done. They've done fantastically to achieve their first-ever promotion to the third tier, and they'll want to go on and bring home the silverware now.
Wycombe will be hoping that the party lasts until Saturday no doubt! They're third in the table heading into the weekend but that can all change very quickly, especially if they're beaten. And I reckon they will be.
David Prutton predicts: 2-3 :)

What an unbelievable day of football; all three teams at the top of the EFL leagues win 0-4, and Stanley make 3 substitutions in one match!
Surely an historic day!
Stanley were just superb today, the best all-round performances I've watched this season. The scoreline didn't flatter the Reds and, illnesses or not, Wycombe were not bad. If Chappers hadn't made a 'Banksian' save in the opening 15 minutes, it may have changed things but, by about the time of Jacko's opening goal, Stanley were in control, and never took their foot off the pedal. Great defensive work, covering for each other to snuff out Wycombe attacks. Great midfield battling, and closing down their players in their own half. And great forward play, with four goals as different to each other as is possible.
Really pleased to see the captain give the ball to Zanzala after he rightly won the penalty, and even more delighted for the No.9 that he took it with aplomb.
Finally, great performance too from the Stanley faithful who helped make it a day in the sun to remember.

I'm sure you do, 28. But why do I get the impression you could start an argument if you were in a room on your own?
I didn't suggest there was any disagreement between team-mates, or imply anything about your commitment to the cause.
All I meant was that, whilst Clark had an outstanding game yesterday and deserved to be on the score sheet, I thought the captain's decision to give the ball to Zanzala was generous to a lad who's sat on the bench for the last four months and was clearly delighted to score his first League goal.
It was just another little piece of history for him and Stanley.

The article on the above web site about the game confirms my view that Wycombe fans are a very fair bunch. It's always been a good day out there, almost a home game for Mrs.Exile and me, and I wouldn't mind at all if they come up with the Stanley

Re: Wycombe Wanderers Match Thread

:) Gareth Ainsworth top bloke hope Wycombe follow Stanley up
Quote:

Gareth Ainsworth said his players were punished for a below par performance by a top quality Accrington side at Adams Park on Saturday afternoon.
The league leaders moved a step closer to the title with a comprehensive 0-4 win over the Chairboys and added another twist to the race for the final automatic promotion spot.
Despite the defeat, results elsewhere mean that Wanderers remain in third and know that two wins will see them promoted.
Although Ainsworth felt that although luck didn’t perhaps deserve to be on their side this afternoon, he is confident that a big team effort can see Wanderers over the line.
“Lady Luck is smiling on us today because we didn’t deserve any fortune as we didn’t work hard enough,” he said speaking after the game.
“The boys are devastated in there, but all I will say is that Accrington are worthy champions of this league.
“There hasn’t been another team in this league that has come here and done what they did and that is why they will be champions.
“They were outstanding; the way they closed, the way they took their chances and defended resiliently, and we were below par today so that combination has ended up as a 0-4 defeat.

We may not have scored as many goals as other teams, but no team has conceded fewer than Stanley.
Surely one of the main reasons we are currently top of the league.
Not only did Aaron lay the foundation for Saturdays win, he laid the first brick on the 5th August 2017.
All hail Chappers! - the most improved player in our team of champions.

Two great saves from Chapman early on and then we bossed the rest of it with four great goals. Struggled to choose between Scotty Brown who seemed to be everywhere as well as scoring a wonder goal and Jackson who scared the living daylights out of Wycombe with his pace for MoM. Had a lovely chat with a Wycombe fan who came to shake my hand on the way back to the car. Told him I hope they go up with us and not just because it's one of the easiest grounds for me to get to.
