Charlton - Finley is our new god!

Finley having a great game, Big Ben doing well.
The rest struggling a bit but looking better towards the end.
We can still get a point from this.

Showing the same spirit as last season to grind out a result. Agree with lord D's half time appraisal. We pressurised the Charlton goal well second half and deserved the equaliser. Finlay looked good all game. Sykes had a bit of a struggle. Charlton looked dangerous all game. We played too many heading practice crosses for the Charlton defence for me. I will let someone else start the midfield and Scott brown debate!
Did the Charlton's goal cross the line? I want to see the var replay!

Overall I thought Clark was MOTM. Finley was quit second half.
New left back look composed when he came on for Big Ben (I think it’s fair to say Coley doesn’t rate him).
McConville had a really good game as did Johnson.
The rest were ok but still struggled with a higher level I thought.
Kee was completely anonymous apart from a first half header he put wide.

Full marks for Coley for turning this match around. We finished better and fitter.

Re: Charlton - Finley is our new god!

Was a definate goal Chevvy, well crossed the line.Johnson MoM for us, The second half we were well on top, to me because the "Subs" were used early enough for once, they made a huge difference, Last season we played 2 up front and both strikers got a fair share of goals, so why Billy was played on his own today defies logic as far as i'm concerned.:(

Re: Charlton - Finley is our new god!

Agree with most of what has been said. I thought we were punching a bit above our weight today but we got the valuable point. We will have to up our game as some of the passing and communication is awful. How many second balls did we win? we seemed to be a team of strangers at times as we were caught out dithering on the ball as there was no one in a passing position. It is in gams like this that we can all spot our weaknesses and hopefully work on them. You could tell Donacien was missing. We do need to have two strikers up front in this league, Billy had no chance today. I have to question if he is up to playing in this league.

Because he's the only decent striker we've got at the club Cashy... Clark mom for me

I agree but Billy needs a partner much better altogether when he has. also thought the save Rippers made at death was a cracker.

Oxford on Tuesday.

Played 3, lost 3, GD -9, bottom.

A banana skin for us then.

If someone had offered me 4 points from 3 games before the season I would have taken it.

Not a banana skin, lord d, every game is an opportunity.

Re: Charlton - Finley is our new god!

Good game today we are still finding our level and Coley is looking for his best 11 a draw against one of the favourites isn't bad and we looked fitter than them at the end , left back looked good as did Finley still need to muscle up in midfield especially in the early stages off a game desperately need a couple of strikers in on loan but 4 points isn't bad and 2 away games coming up were I can see us bringing home the points.

smudgie 18-08-2018 19:11

Re: Charlton - Finley is our new god!

Must admit I was surprised to see Kee on his own up top.

Apparently he also had a foot injury , definitely need a reinforcement or 2 up front !

Also agree, 100% I would have taken 4 points from 3 games before the season started.

Twenty Eight 18-08-2018 20:14

Re: Charlton - Finley is our new god!

The foot injury for Billy is a big worry.
We’re already lightweight up front.
Finally finally got to see Jordan play on the left albeit a cameo.. I would love to see him play there more often.
Got to be honest and say we were second best for long periods today so point gained rather than two lost.
On to the next one ......

choirboy 18-08-2018 20:28

Re: Charlton - Finley is our new god!

I agree with most of the comments made so far.
Billy up front alone was going to be a struggle especially against their BIG No5!
(Also a struggle if Billy was carrying a knock.)
We seemed to be playing an odd sort of 'Christmas Tree' formation;
:idunno:

Kee
Finley
Clarke McConville
Brown Coneely
Johnson Sykes Hughes Big Ben
Ripley

It was a truly wonderful Minute of Applause for STANLEY LEGEND DAVE HARGREAVES before the kick off!
:worthy::worthy::worthy::worthy:
I thought that our best players today were Johnson and Finley.:alright::alright:
Finley was all over the field playing with a maturity, creativity and control reminiscent of Jimmy Ryan at his best for us. Johnson is a really dynamic attacking full back and is close to being as good as Janoi was last season.
We lacked punch up front with Billy playing solo against a 'Big Beast' and we seemed to be lacking in midfield where we seemed to be.... 'a man short!'
Ripley looks like a good signing as does the new lad Anderton at left back who came on as sub for Big Ben who also had a good game! It will be interesting to see who Coley and Jimmy opt for on Tuesday v Oxford at left back.
:idunno:
The game started evenly but once Charlton scored from a classic breakout after defending a corner, they seemed to be controlling the game whilst playing on 'Cruise Control' for a good hour. Had Charlton scored a second goal I think that they could have run out easy winners.
It was when Coley did the two substitutions that we upped our game with the extra pace of Zanzala causing Charlton more problems. Anderton nearly scored a debut goal with a powerful header and this whipped our lads up into full attacking mode! Sean and Clicker really got going and put the Charlton defence under a lot of pressure which finally told with a goal at the third attempt from Clicker Clarke!
In the end I honestly think that Stanley did well to get a point out of the match
and that Charlton will be disappointed with the fact that they sat back on a one goal lead.
One thing about Stanley is that they NEVER GIVE UP!:theband::alright:
Well done lads!
14th in League One at the moment.
And I for one will be happy if we are 14th at the end of the season!
ON STANLEY ON

Re: Charlton - Finley is our new god!

I thought Sykes was immense today. Deserves a lot of credit for the way he conducted himself as a young player who was obviously targeted, quite legitimately, by some robust challenges from Charlton. Well done young fellow.
I'm also well impressed with young Finley. He seems to have skipped from non league to L1 seemlessly and would probably give him m.o.m just in front of Johnson who had a much better game at RB today.
Also thought Ben did well at LB, playing out of position and got subbed. I thought he did ok.
Subbing Billy and bringing Zanzala into the game at that stage was a good move (thumbs up for use of sub Mr Manager - 54th min !!) cos we seemed a bit bereft of attacking threat (well what did we expect,..no Jackson).
He showed enough that he can be a threat, and he's young and quick, so hopefully he can be honed into our team to fill that gap.
Finally, some of the interplay between Clark and Johnson, down the right today, was a joy to watch and hopefully that'll develop as the season unfolds.
Good point in the end, I thought, Charlton are a good side with quality players and for the first 25-30 minutes it looked like we were in for a mullering but we slowly and gradually found a way back into the game. Second half they came again and Rippers had some saves to make but we ended strongly and could have nicked it.
Against one of the fancied teams in this division, I think we've done pretty good and should look forward to life in L1. We'll do ok.

Chrisr's boxing analogy summed up yesterdays match perfectly.
This was akin to a 3 round contest between a big skilful heavyweight & a competent lightweight.
In the opening minutes we began with confidence, dancing round our opponent & landing the occasional blow.
Then, half-way through the first round, he landed the sucker punch & we hit the canvas.
Rising at the count of nine, we staggered about like a punch-drunk fighter trying to avoid the 'coup de grace'.
Miraculously, almost at the end of the last round & after the administration of smelling salts by our trainers, we briefly had the giant on the ropes.
Mind you, it took hammer blows from 3 of our forwards before we landed one squarely on the jaw & the giant finally toppled.
Before the game, their fans were predicting a comfortable 4-0 thrashing of such insignificant opponents - 'Accrington Stanley, who are they?' etc.
Don't bother visiting their forum if you're looking for any plaudits for our plucky comeback, for none you will find.
As far as the Addicks are concerned, they blew the game against quote; 'a poor, non-league standard side, in front of a paltry 2,200 crowd, at the worse ground in the league - bar none!
No acknowledgement of our rise from obscurity to achieve League 1 status. No credit for a worthy opponent overcoming certain defeat.
Just whingeing about how they used to play the likes of Chelsea & just how far they've fallen. Blah, blah, blah!
Yesterday was all about guts & determination overcoming the odds.
We may not be the best team in the league. We may even face a battle to avoid relegation. But, by jove, we'll go down fighting.
No one will defeat our spirit. Let em all come!
In the words of Chumbawamba -
'We get knocked down, but we get up again
You are never gonna keep us down'

"We may not be the best team in the league. We may even face a battle to avoid relegation. But, by jove, we'll go down fighting."

You could be right on the first two points but not QUITE on the third point simply because...

WE ARE NOT GOING DOWN!
STANLEY ARE STAYING UP!

Don't see what he's said that's so wrong.
Charlton are a much bigger club, they finished 6th last season. We are newly promoted, just lost our star striker and Gillingham beat us at home etc etc etc etc etc

They let a 1-0 lead slip.

No wonder he's disappointed.

At least he didn't trot out a load of excuses about the ref, the pitch, they way we played. His anger was at his own players.

Well all I can say is that if I were a Charlton fan witnessing Saturday I’d be over the moon with my Manager for telling how it is.
Charlton should have been home and hosed before they let us back in.
I think we need to stop being so sensitive.

They say football’s a game of opinions and we all see different things in a game. A number of people commenting that they thought Ben had a good game, however, I just didn’t see it. He gave a wholehearted, commited performance (he always does as he’s that type of player), however, I felt he just didn’t use the ball well enough and gave it away too often from unpressured situations. I appreciate he’s filling in and it’s not his natural position - my measure is ‘does he match up to being an effective L1 standard left back’.

If we’re to survive in L1, we need more than effort, we need to add quality into our assessments of who plays well or not.

Thought Johnson was decent, however their goal was from that side and too similar to one of the Gillingham goals. Finlay was our stand out player from my viewpoint. As I said as the start, all about opinions!

Always been and had a look on here out of interest. Decided to give it a punt and like everyone else state there opinion. Position for position Johnson was by far our stand out playe thought he was top draw “in my opinion” him and Clark work together extremely well both easily play championship with Johnson still only 21! As I think some people forget god knows what I was doing at 21. Sam yes was good but isn’t he just a fitter stronger younger Scotty brown? Although I do believe he will play a key role at 26 being in his prime. We desperately need a striker in lacking up top at the moment. So far so good think we will be safe role on tommorow.

Also This time not an opinion a fact Johnson was on the other side in the LM position covering in after a corner while Sean was covering RB for Charltons goal as. they got past Sean far to easily which I’ll let him off for his class peformance against Bristol Rovers. Top man is Sean but can’t defend

Re: Charlton - Finley is our new god!

Lee Bowyer certainly wanted to his players to get the message.
'It's just not good enough!' appeared at the end of almost every sentence.
I guess it's all about expectation. As a former Premier League side, Charlton & their fans are wondering how the hell they ended up in league 1 playing little old Accrington Stanley & worse - failing to get the better of them.
We, on the other hand, are delighted to be in league 1 & will be even happier if we're still there at the end of the season.
At the end of the day, Lee Bowyer's sole purpose is to get Charlton promoted, just as John Coleman's is to keep us in League 1.
All Saturday proved was that you underestimate Accrington Stanley at your peril.
You have to win respect. Let's hope that before the end of the season, teams will actually be happy to achieve a point at the Wham.
