Wigan match thread.

All tough games now Wigan need points to escape the bottom reaches we need to win to kick start a run can't hide behind unavailable players we matched Sunderland apart from finishing so same 18 for me Butcher to start if fully fit for either Phillips or McConville.

Did Phillips play the other night??

Agree that Butcher is a reliable 7/10 every game these days........

Yes, Phillips started then Butcher came on to replace him in last 15 minutes or so - hopefully Matt's fit to start tomorrow

Last six games would put Wigan in 7th place, Stanley at 21st!
All tough games for rest of season!

Talking of questions Mike.. here are a few that if answered this afternoon will bring calm to my aging troubled breast !..

1. Will someone reinforce into Toby Savin's psyche that he really is
talented enough to be Stanley's No 1 keeper ?.
2. Is Ben Barclay really a full back ?.
3. Will Cameron Burgess be able to calibrate the power in his left foot by minus 25 % so that his crosses reach the goal area and not the opposite corner flag ?
4. ( Sorry Joe !) Will super Sean ever again score a goal in the Football League ?. ( I Darent add ' or is he really past it ' or a certain lady will have my guts for garters !)
5. Can Adam Phillips and David Morgan really play up to Football League standards ?
6. Is Jonathan Russell as unhappy as he appears to be ?.. or is his seeming disinterest and lethargy on the pitch due to some deeper cause ?.
And finally... Will today's team collectively provide something to cause John Coleman to beam one or two of the radiant and charming smiles which we all know he can readily produce , to the camera in his post-match interview ?.

I'll be watching closely with avid interest , hoping for answers, a goal or two ( from the Reds that is !).. and a win for our team which will lift not only their points tally, but also a few flagging spirits which have seemingly been on display lately!.

nb.. Don't shoot folks !.. its only me, musing in my galloping dotage once again !... ON STANLEY .. ON TO GREATER THINGS !!.

Great game to watch and apart from being asleep for their goal inside 45 seconds never looked like conceding another made up for the lads especially after all the remarks about certain players not being good enough, McConville man of the match but all players at least a 7+ thought Barclay had one of his best games in a Stanley shirt Maguire picked at the last minute put in a great shift, Butcher steady away and such a shame Morgan's effort was well saved slowly showing what he is about prepared to mix it and after picking up a yellow didn't deter him from getting stuck in and great to see Savin having a good confident display. Hope Rodgers is ok another who showed how good he can be congratulations to Perritt on his league debut.

Great performance from the entire team.
Not the fanciest football at times but a good, old-fashioned battle by two well matched sides.
Sean McConville’s dead ball deliveries and Toby Savin’s bravery made the difference.
Good to see some of the ‘fringe’ players getting a run out and doing their bit to stop the losing streak.
MotM? Must be the ref who finally awards Stanley a penalty!

agree with exile every man today gave a damn good performance no-one at all could be faulted, well done stanley how the hell we won that with half first team out defies logic twas a great display, also though Peritt only came on near the end the kid did very well in the short time he was on.

Thought Both teams were wary of the pitch and Acci played it better.they simply were bigger and stronger than Wigan.
With a foot in both camps !,probably only Lang would get in Acci’s team.
Two stonewall penalties were missed (one each).
Hard to pick out mom ,Shaun was involved in all the goals, but Burgess caught the eye.
In summary hardworking performance in trying conditions, will have harder games in the future

Re: Wigan match thread.

A superb three points for Stanley against Wigan and fully deserved.:theband:
After the horrific start Stanley controlled the game from the goalkeeper to our forwards. As others have noted it was difficult to find a weakness after the first minute! Our defence was pretty solid, midfield today was excellent and the forwards kept the pressure on Wigan’s defence throughout! Savin had a good match after the initial error. Hughes marshalled our defence with assurance and it was great to see Burgess and Nottingham posing so much threat in attack and getting a well deserved goal each. I thought that Rogers and Maguire were very competitive with Rogers winning a lot of brave headers and Maguire was highly mobile and he did so well to last the whole 95 minutes not having played for so long! Central midfield were in total control with Butcher looking like he is over those recent niggling injuries, Morgan finding some pace and almost scoring too. Barclay was dynamic getting up and down between our defence and forwards. Sean had a better time roaming across the high line and his deliveries from free kicks and corners were a real threat throughout the match. Charles was a constant thorn in the side of the Wigan defence and despite constantly being shoved in the back he kept the pressure fully on his opponents. I don’t recall the referee giving us a single free kick for a foul on Charles which was unbelievable! Good for young Perritt to come on too but hope that Rogers isn’t added to our long injury list!
Should give the whole squad a bit more confidence for the coming matches!:alright:
ON STANLEY ON.:theband::signbeer::drink:
KEEP THE FAITH.
:theband::thankya:

Btw, if, as Dan Jewel stated, Dean Winnard was at the match, it was like an old boys’ reunion. Good to see Peter Murphy and Liam Richardson on the pitch afterwards too! Didn’t spot Ian Craney, though.

Re: Wigan match thread.

Just watched the highlights on ‘Quest’ and clearly our defence was split with Notts mistiming his run across the pitch attempting an intersection and Hughes showing a lack of pace. However, Toby’s attempt to ‘clearout’ the run in by Lang was futile. On a scale of ten for a tackle it would score NIL! Hence 1-0 to Wigan. After that the lad had a really good game. I stand by my original observation made in ‘real time’ that he was at fault......
I usually only try to be positive when I post but I am only following this up with a deeper analysis in order to explain my original comment.
So please don’t take this as ‘Negativity’. I like to think of myself as being a 100% Stanley fan!

Doing fine Alan, hope your clan are looking after you !!!
Was a no lose game for me,and summed up by Leams take on proceedings.
Wigan were aware of what Accrington are all about, and if you lose your individual battles, you lose the game and Acci won around 9 out of 10 !!!
Not a great deal of football played but as my previous post,I think they played the conditions.
Still can’t believe Acci competing at the level they are, anyone complaining need a reality check!!!!

never expected that yesterday especially after the early goal. one thing about stanley is that you,ll never be bored with a same old performance from one week to another. at least there,s a week off now to get ready for next saturday. its hard to believe that we are still in with a play off chance after the last few games where the season looked well and truly over.

Yes a big plus the week,s break to prepare against Peterborough who Rochdale scored 3 against yesterday, no Dion away with Northern Ireland, but either Colby could be back or throw Mansell in these " fringe " lads chomping at the bit for the shirt as Maguire showed yesterday , Pritchard could also be fit who'd be a manager great if they are available let,s have a run now.
