Oxford away match thread.

Available on IFollow tomorrow night so might affect who travels my team forecast:-
Trafford.
Savin. Nottingham. Sherring.
O, Sullivan. Pell. Morgan. Butcher. McConville.
Mansell. Bishop.
Subs:- Savin. Amankwah. Hamilton. Leigh. Clark
Nolan. Malcolm.
After watching a replay off the full match I would put Pell in for Hamilton for more aggression in the middle and help take pressure off Conneelly in possession, not sure on inuries so other,s could come into the reckoning.

Sorry everyone auto type again Morgan should read Conneelly thanks for the spot. Josh. If you see though I put relieving Conneelly in possession.

After shipping 7 goals in our last 2 games, should Trafford still be considered our automatic 1st choice keeper?
If it had been Toby in the same position, some would be screaming for his head.

VALAIRIAN 27-09-2021 10:33

Re: Oxford away match thread.

I would say it was the defence shipping the goals and not the keeper, Savin, Trafford, or Bavo :D

:) :) :)

I Follow for me tomorrow........I'd like to see Mansell get another start with Colby, also I think Hamilton is more of a Butcher type of midfielder so would also like to see Pell start in his place. Wonder if Charles has apologised to everybody yet?......or if we won't see him again in a Stanley shirt? Maybe a transfer north of the border would solve all our problems. At least we'd get something for him....

doubt that mate both good keepers trafford has edge imho the way he covers his box.

Re: Oxford away match thread.

Only food for thought chaps!
Yes, poor defending provides chances for opponents, but they still need converting.
Morecambe only had 3 attempts & Trafford failed to stop any.
Fact is, only 2 teams in L1 have conceded more goals than us.
It wasn't that long ago everyone was praising Savin for the number of clean sheets on his cv. Then he got a reputation for rushing out & over-committing.
IMHO Trafford is the opposite & too often stays glued to his line.
Morecambe's 2nd goal was a good example, where he had the chance to meet their cross but chose not to, allowing them to score from only 2 yards out.
I don't find him a commanding presence in his box, particularly at corners where he always looks nervous.
Without doubt he's a talented young player, but if there's one position where experience counts, it's surely the goalkeeper.

cashman 27-09-2021 16:07

Re: Oxford away match thread.

to me he had no chance of the third goal a brooke bond monkey could have scored that, twas a terrible back pass caused that.

Exile on Spencer St 27-09-2021 16:43

Re: Oxford away match thread.

It wasn’t a ‘back pass’.
It certainly looked like it on the day at t’other end of the pitch but, looking at the video, it looks to me that Nolan hammered the ball against the Morecambe player (don’t know if he thought he’d get a throw in) and it took a massive deflection off the Morecambe player right into Stockton’s path.
Up until that disaster, I thought Nolan had injected a bit of much needed pace down the left.

I also thought Trafford could have better anticipated the cross for their second, but it was well taken by Philips.

Re: Oxford away match thread.

One change to the 11 not sure about formation could remain 3-5-2 or it could be 4-4-1-1 lineup:-
Trafford.
Sykes. Nottingham. Sherring.
O, Sullivan. Hamilton. Conneelly. Butcher. Amankwah.
Bishop. McConville.
Subs:-. Savin. Pell. Leigh. Mansell. Nolan. Clark. Malcolm.

Sensible as Oxford often play with three forwards.

Yep
4-5-1

I would prefer to read the formation as a 4-3-3. With two full backs and Sean and Johnny working from midfield and up the wings.

Mmmmmmm...think if I were a clever manager I'd change the keeper AND the entire back line for Saturday.........I never thought losing Hughes, selling Burgess and Rogers being injured would have made such a difference......or is it the midfield thats not doing its job? Perhaps, Conneeley and Morgan (if recovered from Covid) might help shield our fragile back line? Who'd be a manager eh!

Re: Oxford away match thread.

The back line lost Hughes and Burgess and Rodgers in my opinion the best 3 with Nottingham being the 4th, all these players are calm on the ball and use it purposely, Savin hurries to much often a punt up to nobody Sherring looked lost first half beaten for pace. This panic on the ball and hurried passing bypassing our midfield and putting them onto the defensive. Ironically the first minutes of the game upto the first goal we were playing well Butcher missing a couple of chances as Coleman says they were clinical if we had been we would have been 2 in front, lots to work on and hopefully Rodgers and Pritchard back soon I am praying we go back to 2 upfront at home against Ipswich.

did not even bother with ifollow. not the first time stanley have been hammered at oxford. expected nothing but a defeat but not shipping in 5 goals though. Could be worse we could be donny rovers fans. Hope trafford gets a rest from the firing line on saturday. no matter how he is playing it will not do his confidence much good letting all these goals in. Keepers set so much on keeping clean sheets and it aint happening for the lad where confidence means all in the sticks.

Didn’t go or watch the game but the only Stanley match I’ve ever walked out of early was at Oxford. It was in the dying days of the Snake’s tenure and I recall Stanley lost 5-0. It was awful.
So scoring one goal (or two if you have x-ray vision) last night was an improvement.
Lots of talk about poor defending but I noted Coley’s reference in his interview to ‘defending’ from the front.
Looking at the ‘bare’ stats (in blue, below) it suggests things were not as one sided as the score line implies.
In fact, the ‘defensive’ stats for each team (tackles made, interceptions, etc), which showed things in a bit more detail but are no longer online, were quite similar.
The BIG difference was the ‘attacking’ stats (in grey/red below).
Both teams had a similar number of shots but Oxford’s were three times more likely to be on target. Over half Stanley’s shots were from outside the box. Nearly all from Oxford inside the box and thus a shooting accuracy of 60% compared with Stanley’s 21%.
So it seems clear that it’s not just the defenders who have more work to do.

I don't see why Savin comes in for comment for a league game - or do you mean Trafford hurries too much ?

Re: Oxford away match thread.

We can all argue the pro's & cons of team selection, formation & game-plans till the cows come home.
At the end of the day all that really matters in football are goals - preferably in the opponents net!
We were overrun by Wigan & Oxford because their attacks were faster & more decisive than ours.
Even against Morecambe, despite 72% possession & leading twice, indecision cost us 2 points.
We must take last night on the chin in the hope JC can re-motivate our battered team confidence for Saturday.
Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow is another day.

Watching the lowlights a few times, the one thing sticking out - which will not win me any prizes is - we CANNOT defend!

I seem to remember that Tony came on at half time in the Wigan game and played well - influencing the game?

I thought he played on the left? He played on the right against Oxford and seemed to be out of position for a couple of the goals??

Just what I picked up from a few minutes on the television - I appreciate that a game is 90 minutes :)

Sherring looks lost also.

I have every faith in Coley sorting it out, but it is how quickly that will define our season :)
