Carlisle United

Brunton Park was badly affected by the recent floods and is out of action for some time so Carlisle are having to play home games elsewhere. Today's Trophy match against Redditch will be played at Workington which is the nearest ground available that is still in Cumbria. They've also had generous offers from Workington Town RL, Penrith and Gretna and will be making an announcement about future matches as soon as they can.

There was an arial photo of Brunton Park and the surrounding area on the BBC website yesterday. The whole area was a complete washout.

. . . and the latest news is that Billy's owner has identified the errant goldfish , but in view of the fantastic good fortune which Carlisle have enjoyed since the auric swimmer favoured them with a visit , Billy will now be staying with the football club as a sort of lucky mascot.

This uplifting story is just spoilt by one unfortunate fact. Billy is, in fact Judy .

Yes, in all the excitement nobody noticed that Billy lacked a certain something . . . but, as a spokesman at Carlisle said "We're quite satisfied with the situation , and we wouldn't want to carp".

Who said that you couldn't make it up ?

That's the trouble with football officials - they're just useless when it comes to sexing goldfish.
