Cambridge Unites Match Thread 29th April 2023
Last home match of the season on Saturday against relegation rivals Cambridge United.
Another ‘Must Win’ match if the Stanley are to take the quest of League One survival to the final match of the season away at Oxford United. 250+ Stanley supporters enjoyed the tremendous away victory over Bolton on Tuesday night. Every player gave their all to get the win!:jimbo: The players know that this must be repeated in the final two matches. The club have made a super decision to sell Home tickets for The Coppice End. So every body needs to get right behind the team and cheer them on to another victory!:jimbo: The team have faced incredible bad luck this season with a host of injuries to key players and found it difficult to play a settled team. Let’s have a full flag display and all be as loud and proud as we can in support of our boys in red!:music8: KEEP THE FAITH:theband::jimbo: ON STANLEY ON:wave8::rose8::signbeer::drink: STAYING IN LEAGUE ONE:theband::jimbo: |

Rebecca Welch. The only referee throughout the whole of this season so far who has treated both sides fairly whilst letting the game flow. Hopefully Rebecca will carry on where she left off last time at the Wham.

Re: Cambridge Unites Match Thread 29th April 2023
Someone said ' Poor Stanley ' to me as I left the ground..
And ' poor ' was the operative word I'm afraid !. For such an important game the team selection was poor, the Manager's chosen tactics were poor, the quality of play from almost all the team was poor. And all this against a Cambridge team who were also poor !. Weaknesses were apparent in key areas in particular in defence who got little cover from a struggling midfield. Our ' Strikers' didn't and thus were totally ineffective, and overall there was a lack of the steel and purpose required for this occasion. In his Radio interview the Manager did have the grace to admit that throughout the season the Stanley have 'not been good enough '.. and this fact was underlined for us all this afternoon at the Wham/Crown !. Disappointing but somehow inevitable ?.. ( But nevertheless my Season Ticket is safely stored away until the Autumn ! ). |
Re: Cambridge Unites Match Thread 29th April 2023
Well the fans turned up today - shame the team didn't!
There was only one team playing football today & it wasn't Stanley. Cambridge out-thought & out-passed Stanley from kick off & their first goal seemed almost inevitable. Stanley by comparison played like a team of strangers. Devoid of ideas, ability & skill, they simply hoofed their way into L2. Todays defeat was as much to do with poor tactics as poor play & the management must accept much of the blame. In the first half especially, we barely strung a single pass together & relied on panicky long balls to no one in particular, which proved meat & drink to the Ewe's big defenders. The subs made more impact but it was all too little too late. Apart from a penalty award, we never looked like scoring from open play. Adieu to L1, it was good while it lasted Ps. Well done the Shrimps! They battled to overcome a 0-2 deficit at half time to win 3-2. Good luck Morecambe! You showed a fighting spirit Stanley lacked. |

Thanks , yes we have had a good run , a draw at Pompy , then wins against Wycombe , Charlton and Lincoln. Cole Stockton has finally found his form with 5 goals in his last 3 games. We still need a miracle though , we need Burton to beat both Cambridge on Wednesday and MK on Sunday and we also need to win at Exeter. I was wanting an Accrington win today which would have probably relegated Cambridge. |
Re: Cambridge Unites Match Thread 29th April 2023
For me the club's goose was cooked by the standard of strikers brought in the Summer compounded by the business in the January transfer window. With the possible exception of Whalley the forwards have had a dismal record for scoring in open play.

Re: Cambridge Unites Match Thread 29th April 2023
Another clueless performance brings an abysmal end to an awful season.
What’s disappointing is that it’s come as no surprise. For me the writing was on the wall away at FGR and it’s going to need some significant changes if the club are to avoid a repetition in L2. |

Re: Cambridge Unites Match Thread 29th April 2023
I hope Hamilton is okay after being shot just before the first goal to leave Dunk free.
The turnstiles need fixing before next season, they were accepting the season cards/tickets but not moving sometimes. The girl behind the turnstile said you had to scan it again, which was rubbish as they won't accept another and when denied (as it clearly accepted the first and was told okay) was told to go to the ticket office and the queue of 100 people for them to tell us it had been used no doubt. Then the scoreboard broke, and then the team. The last time we got relegated in 1999 was a turning point with Coley coming in, that was 39 years since the previous one. The 1999 relegation lead to an uphill rise, eventually getting into the conference (even that had seemed impossible) the League. The 1960 one put us into Division 4 but we soon went out of business. This time we are back in Division 4, with better facilities than 8 years ago and a new long term lease on the ground. I don't mind League 2, I was even excited when the NWC was formed 40+ years ago and we were in it, I just hope we stabilise next season and don't fall back into the abyss. Having a football league is an asset to the town and borough, and support has grown over ten years since we got 1000 at home in the recent nadir, and hope it will continue. |
Re: Cambridge Unites Match Thread 29th April 2023
Perhaps the defining moment yesterday was the loss of Conneely in the 21st minute.
Our midfield simply evaporated, putting the defence under constant pressure & starving our forwards of any real opportunities. It shows how crucial an effective midfield is in protecting the defence & providing the right service to strikers. To use a boxing metaphor, the defence are the sturdy legs, the attack the fast arms - but the midfield is the brain that co-ordinates everything. |

Seems like 'The Stanley Spirit' was a concept which the Team psyche just couldn't embrace to provide the relegation fight so much needed yesterday !. It saddens me to reach these conclusions which I am sure will be shared by.many fans on our Forum and elsewhere.!. |
Re: Cambridge Unites Match Thread 29th April 2023
If recruitment last summer was difficult, especially for strikers, what will it be like this close season with the loss of status and a diminished budget? I fear this team would struggle in League 2 and drop straight through into the National League.
|
Re: Cambridge Unites Match Thread 29th April 2023
It's easy to assume the addition of a proven striker would solve all our woes. It wouldn't!
Our current problems are deeper rooted than individual ability. I seriously doubt if Harry Kane would make much difference to our goal tally, he wouldn't get the chance. Stanley's rise from non-league wasn't because we had better players than other teams. It was because we played better football. Saturday proved that philosophy beyond doubt. Cambridge were nothing special, but their game plan was simple - control the ball and you control the game! Over to you Mr Coleman |

Play on the break quickly has they push a high line with their back 3 that have no pace, target balls to right corner flag has their current wing back can't defend at all always out of position, don't worry about them as a threat non- existant passing ability just bring the ball with snow on it back under control when it comes back out of orbit, finally defender,s just keep a tidy back line no need to worry about a goal threat has they don't possess one. PS. Score first and the 3 points are yours also don't worry about opposition bench has they will be in the 4th official,s ear. |

Re: Cambridge Unites Match Thread 29th April 2023
Next season in league 2 could be one of the most important in the club that is Accrington Stanley we aren't a Bristol Rovers who Coleman quoted has bouncing straight back clubs like Rover's, Notts County etc can still command decent gates in the National league we wouldn't and we have to arrest any thoughts of a slide down, we need to establish ourselves from the off has a top league 2 side and if in the first 3 months of next season we haven't that's the time for a complete change in the management structure hopefully it won't come to that and John£Co will recruit well this summer, no room for sentiment in this game move out the ones he has said weren't good enough this season because league 2 is a different ball game and we can't afford to carry them.
|
Re: Cambridge United Match Thread 29th April 2023
I agree with you Andy about the slide into Conference... must not happen.
I have to disagree with Coley on his comments about poor recruitment. Players were signed for future years and 23's, far too many had to be played too often this season. As well as the long term injured - JRB/Morgan Etc. - we were without 'key' players too often also - Seamus being a standout example. Add to that, Sean being out for weeks at a time, Pritchards season ending early, Tommy being injured, Mitch missing 6/8 weeks and these are just off the top of my head. Our budget would never survive that :( We spent over 10 seasons in League 2 last time, give me that now and I would be happy - though bouncing right back would put a smile on my face too :) :) |

There's something fundamentally wrong when you consider that Saturday was our 45th game of the season yet we played like a pub team. We never looked close to scoring because we created nothing, relying on aimless long balls. Cambridge simply marked Pressley & Lowe out of the game. As I said before, even Harry Kane would have drawn a blank leading our clueless attack. |
Re: Cambridge Unites Match Thread 29th April 2023
Sad that a drop into league 2 will likely give a lifeline to certain players favoured by our management where really they should be jettisoned to non league football.
