January Window
With the window looming, what do we think????
Which of the loanees - if any - would you not want to lose?? Who would you not want to see sold???? Where do we need to strengthen??? Thoughts Ladies and Gentlemen please :) :) |
Re: January Window
thethegroundthink we need to play the ball on the grass rather than in air the-on the ground
|
Re: January Window
Agree with Cashy and would like to see a quality ball-playing midfielder brought in, in place of Khumbeni whose loan period expires now, does it not?
Don’t want to lose any other loanees, particularly not Awe or Elvis. Nor Aljofree. A manager who could install some confidence into the team would also be nice, or who has some confidence in his own team, as Doolan has us playing with our backs to the wall for the last half hour every f… time. |
Re: January Window
Correct about Nelson :)
:) |
Re: January Window
I agree with Greger a good creative mid fielder could work wonders for the team.
|
Re: January Window
Alex Henderson can do that job well - in my opinion :)
|
Re: January Window
But, options are good - I agree :)

Not seen what Nelson K brings to the squad, other than one too many loanees for a league squad, that Henderson, Coyle, Woods (B), Martin, Love, and Conneely couldn’t. |
Re: January Window
We need another "proper" centre back in the Awe, Rawson mould. And a real Wide-Man or Winger. A prolific striker would e my first choice, but that's not going to happen...so maybe target man so we can change our style of play and suit the likes of Henderson, Whalley and Costello with "knock- downs" providing balls to run on to.
|
Re: January Window
I want to see my man Hunter getting a game up front in the centre. He's a goal sniffer.
|
Re: January Window
Josh Smith big strong and very fast center half waiting in the wings, captain of the youth team.
|
Re: January Window
I think Charlie Brown is on his way to you from Morecambe.

I would describe him as a forward who runs the channels. Scored 6 in 28 for us and this included a great last minute winner at MK Dons where he ran from his own half. He signed a new contract last March until 2026 so not out of contract. |
Re: January Window
So we've actually paid some money for him & given him a 2 & a half year contract t - Ged must rate him, welcome aboard Charlie

I knew there was an option. I didn't know if it was 2 years and a year option or 1 year and a year option. Signed his new deal in March when Brannan was still our manager. Rumours about Derek falling out with him for bringing his dog to training ! |

Nelson Khumbeni has gone back to Bolton.

Welcome to Charlie Caton, hope he can get up to speed quickly and start showing what he’s got.

Re: January Window
The reaction to Chester's Twitter announcement of his departure is something to behold. Charlie Caton was clearly very highly rated and thought of there.

Interesting that Bolton said they wanted to loan him to a bigger club. I don't think he's a big loss to us.

Defender in from Burnley on a one & a half year contract, welcome aboard Benn Ward

Re: January Window
Pity about Costello leaving early. I thought he was one of the better centre forwards we’ve recently loaned but, clearly Burnley are also in need of goal scorers.
Stanley will have to rely on its own players so let’s hope they can get some service up front. |
Re: January Window
Agree it is a pity, played well for us I thought - good luck for the future Elvis :)
Two in and two out, so might not be all that bad :) :) |

Aaron Pickles back out on loan to Southport...

Re: January Window
Windows has been close to disastrous.
We have made one good signing. Benn Ward to replace Awe. He may not be a better player than Awe, but it still appears to be a good signing. If you only want to read positive, cheering posts, stop reading now! We have lost our best forward, Costelloe, and replaced him with two players who have struggled to reach the subs bench so far. We have los Khumbeni and replaced him with no one at all. I was/am not a Khumbeni fan but so bad that we should not replace him, he was not. After all, a more prominent role for los Seamus is hardly what I call progress. Midfield is were we are at our most mediocre. We play Love, Coyle, Batty and towards the end of the game Conneelly, in midfield/wing back positions, most of them players with at least one wooden leg, incapable of a creative forward pass. Coyle is an energetic tackler but his heat map is so small that it looks as if someone has forgotten a kitchen glove on the grass. To me, this looks very similar to the last season we were relegated. We can pick up points here or there with battling performances, but we cannot create anything at all against the poorer teams in the division, even at home. And as that last time, we play our only creative player, the admirable Shaun Whalley, in a role where he is somehow expected to play a through ball to himself to finish. Finally we show our lack of interest in forward play by bringing on Conneelly, thus dropping so deep that our normal defensive minded 5-3-2 or 5-3-1-1 becomes a mix between 7-0-3 and 9-0-1. I did not expect us to sign a World Class midfielder, but the need for a midfielder with some sort of creative mindset should have been obvious. |
Re: January Window
I agree with your main point, Greger, that Stanley lack creativity in attacking midfield, and have done for some time.
Last night’s display revealed what happens when both Liam Coyle and Ben Woods occupy the middle, and the impact on Shaun Whaley’s performance. Thank heavens for a good defensive performance. Hunter made a few good cross field attacking passes but Stanley seemed happy to join with their opponents in “crowding” one side of the pitch at a time and made it even more difficult to play an open passing game. Maybe they figured Cheltenham would out pass them otherwise? I hoped Dan Martin might have pushed on by now but he can’t get consistent game time and seems out of favour. The good news is the “window” remains open until Monday but the bad news is that Morecambe have joined the other 23 League Two clubs able to outbid Stanley. |
Re: January Window
According to Andy Holt on "X" we are still expecting a couple of players in before the window closes. I understand the frustration from Posters. However, for clubs like Stanley creative midfielders (play-makers) are more expensive and more difficult to attract/sign/loan than ANYOTHER position in a football team, including 20 goal a season strikers.
Maybe that's the problem? In my opinion, Ben Woods and maybe Dan Martin, both players who "look-up" before making a pass and could become potential playmakers. However, they would have to be coached to achieve that role. Dan isn't getting on the pitch and is out of favour and Ben Woods is often played out of position as a wing-back (to which he is totally unsuited and looks vulnerable when he has to defend anywhere near our box). Just my thoughts..... |
Re: January Window
New improved contract signed by Ben Woods today, great news! Also a defender signed up from Curzon Ashton, 25 yr old Devon Matthews
|
Re: January Window
Great news about Ben Woods - deserves the pay rise :)

Re: January Window
Glad about that, as we are short...

Re: January Window
Attacking midfielder of the sort we have been missing, but will we see him start as such?
Doubt it. Expect him to be a bench player brought on up front when we are chasing. |
Re: January Window
Quite a busy transfer window compared to previous years under John and Jimmy. Plenty of options to win us the 7 games we need to win get to 50 points. 19 games to do it.........
|
Re: January Window
It had to be busy, given that we lost three starters.
Plenty of options, yes, but will they make us better? I hope and believe that Benn Ward could be a good signing. Loanee Joe O W could compete with Hunter for a spot but on paper a weak squad has become weaker. Maybe Charlie C can get fit and be given a chance. Morecambe and Harrogate games could make or break us. |

Re: January Window
Good signing! At least on paper.
He and O’Brien Whitmarsh give Doolan the opportunity to abandon the destructive 8 defenders - 3 attackers principle that he has applied so far. Don’t think he will, though. |
Re: January Window
Is anyone else finding it impossible to view the three interviews about and with Conor Grant on the ASFC ‘fishy’ web site?
When I click on the item, there’s no video. Just watched Ged’s post Banfam interview, so no problem there. |
