Re: O'Neil number 20

For me it's ASFC and Thats it!

I have changed teams for one reason and another and never made any secret of not being a lifelong supporter... I wasn't born here and wouldn't have been able to pick accrington off the map 15 yrs ago..... so have a lot of people here.. a lot of die hard accy fans are not pure...

But i can't understand supporting two teams at once... what if they play each other.... i think when your supporting a team its 100% ... not 51% for one and 49% for another..

Re: O'Neil number 20

what's the rules on 'anti' support of clubs, looking at the results on a saturday tea time and getting a warm glow inside when an old adversary has been hammered? is that allowed? just in case anyone was wondering. not for me of course. i think its a shame there has to be a loser in football.

by the way i believe steve halford played well in droylsden's win on saturday. can't remember who they were playing?

I am no expert rob but i believe what you describe is not only acceptable but encouraged...

With such a great result for us on sat I even missed out on enjoying the droylsden result.. I presume they played the mighty ones? :)

Re: O'Neil number 20

Rivals in this Order

Altrincham
Weegies especially rangers....
Barrow
Morecambe
Southport

Also welcome to Accy Matty O'Neill, although think we should start with the same side as spanked Barnet on Saturday

Craney, Smithy, Matty O'Neill & JK all on the bench....quality

They did indeed - and that 'warm' feeling was more an outburst of laughter for me when it popped up but I think its the same thing ;)

The team i support, i support them 100%, but that doesnt mean you cant take a liking to another club as well, especially when they are a few leagues apart

UP THE STANLEY

UP THE STANLEY

Gotta say, I am nowadays a totally commited Stanley supporter.
I started watching football (via the telly) in 1955, when Newcastle beat City in the FA cup final, in which Jimmy Meadows broke his leg...in those days, no subs allowed.
City lost 3-1

Following year, City beat Birmingham 3-1, in the game that Bert Trautmann had his neck broken What a result!!

From then on , was a City supporter.

Until, that tragic day in 1958, I was in school, when our Rector announced over the tannoy , that there had been a tragic accident, involving the Man U team in a plane crash!!

That certainly tested my resolve. Along with several of my fellow pupils, I attended the next match at Old Trafford, in which the 'greats' such as Ernie Taylor, who had been signed from Blackpool, appeared... These 'Busby babes' went on to win the FA cup.
However, I soon went back to Maine Road...

From school, we could scoot across in our lunch hour, & catch the players coming out of 'training' & capture their autographs...

Broke my heart when I heard Cliff Sear swear!!

Sorry, possibly lost the thread here, just the meanderings of an old man who loves football, but realises that we cannot support the same team throghout the whole of our lives!!

Things change, & so do we!!

I am a 'Blue' who turned into a 'Red'.

Would never have considered that in 1958!!

Thats it.. A lot have supported one team never even dreaming they may support another one day... Lifes too short..... I never thought I would change but I did due to circumstances of a big fall out and moving away.. but mostly the fallout wiht a club.. big style :)

Sorry to shatter your illusions, Kitch, but they lost to Bolton Wanderers in the final. I was at the same school as Nat Lofthouse's son and he brought the match ball in on the Monday morning.

i was always a rovers fan, but like many others was priced out of going to the matches, so i started watching stanley a few years ago.
however the buzz around the club and fans sucked me in big style and i don't even bother about rovers now.

Of course you're right, Mike.... either dementia is setting in, or maybe I should cut back on the old 'vino tinto'!!
Was that the game where Nat bundled Ray Wood over the line for a somewhat controversial goal?? Never be allowed these days!

Re: O'Neil number 20

trying to take any bias out of it, there is a certain magic about the name Accrington Stanley - even hate-footie women down south know the name. Monday morning and several people in the London borough council offices where I work sought me out to congratulate Stanley on the Barnet result and our second place. They all support various top flight sides - but they always look for Stanley's result ! Amazing really, I mean, I don't give a monkey's wotsit for how united, arsenal, chelsea and the other foreign teams get on.

I support Stanley because it's in my blood.

My Dad was one of "the faithful 3,000" at Peel Park, I'm one of "the faithful 1,000" (a figure which hopefully will be going up soon) at the IES.

Clubs I dislike...Dingles and Walkers because they take fans away from us.

I could never imagine supporting any other club; I am, quite literally, "Stanley Til I Die" - I intend to have my ashes scattered on the Clayton End (but no for a long time yet!) :)

There ya go.. thats what they all say mate. thats what Kitchener said, thats what I said.. Thats probably what 70% and upwards of current stanley fans said at some time then went onto prove themselves wrong..

All I can say is. It's a good job people do change there minds or there would be hardly any Stanley fans as most kids at school or either man utd, arsenal or worse blackburn and burnley.. Its up to us to get them to cange there mind and realise there is a team in there home town :)

Totally agree...I'm more than happy when people are changing their allegiances from someone else to Stanley. I even reckon Fearon'll change one day! :)

As for me, well, put it this way - if you can still support the club when gates are down to around 50 (as I did in '65), then it'll take a lot to shift my allegiances!

Did I miss this?? Did Fearon1 get banned, then reappeared under a different pseudonym? How can that be so? Surely he has the same e-mail address?
Got nowt against him personally, took issues with some of his posts, but not enough to reply to them. What did he do to get banned??

What was happening in 65? Thought it restarted in 69 I know I didnt start to follow Stanley until I played a friendly against them as an apprentice in 1971 and that was when I realised they were starting to put effort in to getting the club going, I say follow as I wasnt around Accy much in the seventies but allways looked for thier result and have stood a fight or 2 to protect the name. As for surporting 2 clubs Accy werent around much between 1960 and the 1980s and as everybody at school surported one of the other 2 has beens in the area it was taken as granted you would follow one of them, I was taken to Anfield to see Liverpool play against Burnley and have followed the reds ever since. I will still follow Stanley with pride and continue to follow Liverpool if it makes me less of a surporter then anyone else I will try not to lose to much sleep over it.

Wynonie Harris 23-02-2005 07:40

Re: O'Neil number 20

What was happening in 65? .

It's a common misconception that Stanley closed down altogether after they resigned from the league in '62. In fact, they continued in the Lancashire Combination in greatly reduced circumstances at Peel Park. By '65 they were all-amateur, the stadium was disintegrating, the crowds were pitifully low and they'd even lost the right to use the name Stanley (after the old club was declared bankrupt in '63). Eventually the club gave up the ghost in January '66.

I will still follow Stanley with pride and continue to follow Liverpool if it makes me less of a surporter then anyone else I will try not to lose to much sleep over it.[/QUOTE]

Don't blame you, Bazf. Even a purist like me accepts that one major source of increased support is fans of other clubs on their "days off" (even Dingles and Walkers!). :)

Like I said... he was a bit of a donkey but now he is OK ....I explained that and I said I think he is OK now...in real life a different person as we all are... apart from get my crayons out and draw you a picture I dont see how I can explain it any better.

But hiking him up as top bloke and practically crowning him top stanley fan 24 hrs after he states he is 100% burnley is drivel... high quality drivel at that..

Thats my opinion.. I aint going to explain it a fifth time :)
