Re: Christian teaching class

Well, Atarah and susie123, that's spot on! Thanks a lot.
I reckon I'll now have to contact Manchester Grammar School to find out more on the preachers and A Bottomley.

Christian teaching class

This photo was posted in December 1909 from Manchester to my grandfather in Accrington, from A Bottomley.
He writes on the back "our minister ... told me a few weeks ago that he was going to be over...

If this group was photographed in Accrington, can anybody identify who they were?
Could it be a works outing? St George's Day? (several of them have flowers in their buttonholes). The lad in front...

Scouts & cadets

The next photograph from my late father's collection is a group of Scouts and what look like army cadets (the latter with their commanding officer, resplendent in breastplate and fine moustache)....

Re: Where is this?

If it had been definitely identified as Accrington, I'd have sent it to either the council archives or the local history society (or both - any opinions?).
But as the jury is still out, I'll keep...

Who are they?

For the second photo from my late father's collection, here's a photo of a fine-looking football team.
Can anyone identify the team, the players, and the period?
On the back is written "From John A...

Where is this?

Among the photos left by my late father are several from Accrington (where he was born) in the early 1900s.
Here is one of a row of smart terrace houses, with the residents standing proudly outside....

Duxbury Wood

Between Clayton-le-Moors and Great Harwood, across the River Hyndburn, is Duxbury Wood. It is now much smaller than it was in the 19th century, but there is a bit of it left.
It's miles away from...

Re: "A Child of Yesterday"

Thanks for showing those paintings, garinda.
There are more examples of his work in the Haworth Art Gallery. Not just paintings but etchings and drawings, too.

Re: "A Child of Yesterday"

Let me tell "A TALE OF TWO LESLIES":

In the 1950s, Dad was submitting short stories to BBC radio, and was fortunate to have several accepted for broadcast. He read some of these himself, but...

Re: "A Child of Yesterday"

No, that was the wrong Leslie Duxbury! A pretender from Clayton.

"A Child of Yesterday"

This is an unashamed plug for a book of short stories by my late father, Les Duxbury.

He was born in Accrington in 1921 and attended Accrington Grammar School, and Accrington School of Arts and...
