Re: Jeanette Winterston - famous novelist

I believe that sometimes adopted children really do not connect with their adoptive parents. When the child also knows their biological parent is still out there, coupled with teenage rebellion,...

Re: Jeanette Winterston - famous novelist

It's the constant victimhood which annoys me. I've never read her books, maybe a more balanced view is apparent there. But the TV programmes give only her side of the story.

Consider: we only...

Re: Jeanette Winterston - famous novelist

Yentob sure can make some excellent documentaries. But I'm afraid it didn't make Accy look good. It was taken as read that anyone with half a brain cell would want to "escape" and "get out of...

Re: Praise! (for a change) - Burnley Rd, Accrington

I'm sorry but Burnley Road is a disgrace. To drive on I mean.
For some reason they've resurfaced a small stretch approaching the roundabout at the edge of town, but neglected to re-do the far...

Re: DJ's book 'unflattering' about Accy.

Yeh what happened?
Back in the grey days of the Major government, Accy was thriving 4 nights a week. Sunday nights people were queuing up to get into the bars. Lots of new bars opened.

During...

Re: Closing dates for FOCUS DIY stores announced

I went to the Focus DIY closing down sale in Burnley a couple of weeks back. All I can say is do not look forward to it so much. There was a queue of cars waiting for parking spaces, and when I...

Re: Charity begins-where?

If it really was taxpayers money it might not be so bad. But it is not, it is borrowed money.

Tax receipts are something like 25% too low to pay for current state expenditure, and this current...

Re: Charity begins-where?

In the world, UK is second after the USA in cash terms. In percent of gross national income (GNI) the UK is seventh. We are top of the league in aid as %GNI for the G8 countries.

Factcheck:...

Re: vince cable doesnt make sense

I think it stuck in his craw having to defend the student loan hike. Let's face it, he was "got to" with the fake female journalist story. They showed him what the system is capable of with that...

Re: vince cable doesnt make sense

Vince Cable is about the only politician who "got it" that Gordon Brown's debt-based economy was doomed to crash. He was the only one who "saw it coming", when the economy was apparently booming. ...

Re: Tesco Nelson

You missed out the "massive" in the car park. It was quite late on Saturday and I bet there were as many cars on it as Asda at that time.

You've just reminded me there is a positive to Tesco...

Re: Council finances in a shocking state

How about cutting all council salaries in excess of say £30k p.a. by half? For example, if you get £40k now, you end up with £35k? That way the ordinary employee is not badly affected, and the...

Re: Tesco Nelson

They've fought off all opposition to open a new Tesco in Padiham, even though there is a big Tesco Extra in Burnley. In Rossendale there is Tesco Rawtenstall and another literally 1 mile up the road...

Re: 464 rochdale bus

1986 was a long time ago. Since then they will have had plenty of time to recruit overpaid management at salaries (what they imagine) is competitive with the private sector. Think NHS for example....

Re: 464 rochdale bus

Slightly later bus on Fridays only, the X41 departs Accy Peel St 2145.

Shocking that the council will allow this (the 464 situation) to happen on a major route like this. Just think, only a few...

Re: Weatherspoons Pub coming to Accy???

I can't see why some people think Wetherspoons won't do well. In both Burnley and Blackburn they are probably their busiest pubs. There are TWO in Burnley and I bet they are the number 1 and 2...

Re: Outside the Town Hall to be open to traffic

Might actually be a good idea. Mr Manchester Tony Wilson was an advocate of depedestrianisation for Manchester. The idea is that pedestrian-only areas become desolate lonely places in the evenings,...
