Re: Accy clubs in 60s

Wrong Cavern, mate. We're talking about the Cavern Club that was on the corner of Milnshaw Lane and Castle Street in Accrington.

Re: Accy clubs in 60s

Florrie? Kevin Florentine, drummer with the Francis T. Construction and man about town in the 60's. I'm sure you must've known him...your Al certainly did. He's still seen around town these...

Re: Accy clubs in 60s

Looks like it could remain a mystery unless someone comes along to enlighten us!

Re: Accy clubs in 60s

He could have done but I'm a bit doubtful. Isaac, Florrie and many other Deck dwellers were huge Mayall and Clapton fans and I'm sure that if he'd played there, the event would have entered into...

Re: Accy clubs in 60s

Clapton was with Mayall between April '65 and August '65. Then after a break in Greece, between Nov '65 and May '66. So if Mayall played at the Cavern between any of those dates, you could well be...

Re: Accy clubs in 60s

In that case, Jay, I'll take it as read that they never appeared there...a pity as it would have been a good name to add to the list, which is quite impressive anyway for a small town.

Re: Accy clubs in 60s

Something just occurred to me about this...although Cream never played in Accy, did Eric Clapton? I remember somebody on Accyweb saying that they saw the Yardbirds at the Con. So the question is, was...

Re: Accy clubs in 60s

Yep, they definitely did, Mr C, on July 29th, 1966. I was a bit sceptical at first, as they didn't seem like the type of band that would play at the Wheel. However, you've got to remember that they...

Re: Accy clubs in 60s

Susan, the reason I suggested the Wheel is that Cream played their first ever date there and Mayall played both the Brazennose Street Wheel and the Whitworth Street Wheel on numerous occasions....

Are you sure you aren't getting confused with the Wheel?

Re: Accy clubs in 60s

Al, the Jazz Club was still going at Peel Park long after the football club closed down. When I was going in the 68/69 era, the Burnley Road stand had been pulled down and the rest of the ground was...

Re: Accy clubs in 60s

Was the subject of a 2-year investigation by the FBI for supposedly obscene lyrics. They finally concluded what the rest of us already knew - the lyrics are simply "unintelligble"! :D

Re: Accy clubs in 60s

The Cavern was on the corner of Milnshaw Lane and Castle Street, right next to the viaduct. It was in the cellar of a stonebuilt 3/4 storey building. Think it might have been a printers (Ward...

Re: Accy clubs in 60s

Sounds like a hub of thriving activity back in the day. Always has a closed, deserted air about it when I walk past, although it might be because it's always around five on a Saturday.

Re: Accy clubs in 60s

That church hall-type place further up (corner of Whalley Road and York St) did have a youth club, as I remember some lads in my class at AGS used to attend. It had a stage at one end too, as they...

Re: Accy clubs in 60s

Reckon you're right, Jay. Never went there, but after having heard about it, the Cavern sounds more the sort of venue that Champion Jack would play at. It's just the mention of Knowlmere St that...

Re: Accy clubs in 60s

Could it be the Arcs AKA Arcadium Ballroom you're talking about? Can't remember a backroom, though.

The Arcadium Ballroom, Accrington on Manchesterbeat - the group and music scene of Manchester in...
