Re: ADSL Wireless Router

Just been looking at the 834 and it has good reviews. I use a SMC I bought a few years ago before they did wireless router and ADSL modem in one box.

Re: ADSL Wireless Router

I am using Belkin equiptment. I have 3 computers hooked up onto the internet and it works brilliantly. I have never had any problems.

This is the stuff I have.

1st PC - main connection
ADSL Modem with Wireless-G Router
Part Number: F5D7632uk4
Link: http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProdu...%2Etworking%2F

2nd PC
High-Speed Mode Wireless G Desktop Network Card
Part Number: F5D7001uk
Link: http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProdu...%2Etworking%2F

3rd PC
Wireless G USB Network Adapter
Part Number: F5D7050uk
Link: http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProdu...%2Etworking%2F

It all works brilliant and is very fast. Installation only took around 10-20 minutes and it all was pretty simple.

Hope that helps.

Can I just ask what security you have setup? Just to make sure you aren't leaving yourself open.

Has your router not got its own firewall? you can make your network more secure by using WEP security, allowing just your pc's to gain access to the network and blocking all others, you dont want one of your neighbours buying a similar product to you and having free access to all your files do you?, and even connecting to the internet on a FREE ride (you pay, they surf) and if they really are cheeky they will use your printer as well

Not on a Belkin I dont, on Netgear products its in the smart wizard set up page under security settings. There is better available than WEP, its WPA-PSK but only the latest routers support it

Re: ADSL Wireless Router

I would say that if you have to ask if you have WEP enabled then you are 99.999% not running it.

There are three main ways to 'secure' your network.

1) Allow certain MAC address' only. Each Network card has a 'unique' ID. YOu can set your router up to only allow connections from teh MAC address' of your network cards. Someone would have to know how to spoof your MAC address to be allowed to connect.

2) WEP. This is an encryption key that you specify on the router and on each network card. If you haven't got the same 'key' on each device it cannot connect. It also encrypts traffic between the devices so people can't sniff your data.

2) WPA. This is the latest and most secure of the three. Check into whether your device supports it(you may need to upgrade the firmware, check the manufacturers site for upgrades) and I'll give you more info.

You can of course combine the MAC address and encryption to give dual layer protection.
